About Miss Chick

Veils and Tiaras, Oh My!

October 6th, 2009 @ 8:25 am by Miss Chick

Now that we finally have a venue (well, we’re 95% certain), I feel like I can move on with planning! Phew!

My awesome fashionista friend and fellow bride S sent me Sara Gabriel’s website full of unique and beautiful veils. These are some of my favorites:

All images below, unless otherwise noted, are courtesy of Sara Gabriel.

The Audrey veil:

The Marcelle:

It’s kind of a fun detail to have your veil monogrammed! I’ve never thought of doing that before. Since Mr. Chick and I both have first names that start with A, it would be doubly meaningful! Or would it look silly? What do you guys think?

The Rita:

I always knew I wanted lace on my veil, but in my vision the lace was usually on the bottom. Now that I’ve seen this, I love the look of the lace on top!

Mama Chick, master seamstress, is making my veil, and we decided that I want a one-piece veil. Something like this:

03a

(Thanks to Fashion Bride for this inspiration photo!)

But, with a much lighter lace trim. Isn’t it a beauty?

I also would like to get a very simple hair piece that would give the veil a little sparkle. I’m 99% sure I will get this:

ah2a

It’s $36 from Tiara Town, with free shipping in the US!

I’m not a tiara kind of girl (I know, I know, most girls say this when they do decide to wear a tiara) but I feel like this one is not so much a tiara as a head band. Anyway, that’s what I’m telling myself! AND it’s a replica of the one Audrey Hepburn wore (in which movie? Anyone know?) and y’all know how I feel about Ms. Hepburn!

I found this tiara in a post from Weddingbee a long time ago, but I cannot for the life of me find it again! If anyone knows, please tell me so I can credit the bee who posted this!

Do you guys think I should wait to buy a dress before buying the tiara? (I bought a dress from Kleinfeld back in February, but unfortunately I have decided it is not THE dress and today I put it up for sale in the  Weddingbee Classifieds! Check it out here. Now I am looking to either have my dress custom made or buy a new dress altogether.) I think yes, but I’m also paranoid that they will stop selling it at some point. It’s only $36… should I buy it?

How did you decide on your veil and hairpiece?

I think that headpiece looks like it could go with pretty much any dress, so I would say go for it! I would wait on making final decisions on the veil, though…there are so many dress colors (true white, off-white, diamond white, ack!) that you would probably want the veil to match.

I bought my dress first, and am now trying to find the perfect complimentary headgear.

It’s gorgeous! I love how different it is, the way it sits. I say go ahead and buy it. At $36, it’s a steal!

I love the Sara Gabriel veils! I am having a replica of the “Drew” style made for me via Etsy Alchemy. Very excited to receive it!

@anvil_chick: I also can’t figure out which movie it was from! Akk!! Anyone?

I was noticing how in the picture the rhinestones lie flat against her forehead, which means they’re probable not stiff and perpendicular to the ground as it shows in the Tiara Town picture. Now I’m a bit worried. What do you gals think?

I just had to post a link to my hairpiece for my Nov wedding! :) It’s called…..”the Audrey!” It turned out great, and totally recommend checking out Etsy for any veils. :)

I think the tiara is beautiful and even if you can’t find a use on your wedding day, it won’t be a mistake purchase (I feel that you would be bound to find a use for it). I would, however, wait for the veil until you have THE dress… you wouldn’t want to buy a white veil and end up with a ivory dress.
Just at thought!
(P.S. Thank you for all the veil motivation, I was thinking against them until I saw your post!)

I love that last veil you posted…it’s gorgeous! As for the veil, I’d check and see what their return policy is just to be safe. I’d say wait, but at the same time I’m sure you can easily sell it on here if it doesn’t work out with the dress you end up with.

@Gator: oh that is good advice. And I’m glad I motivated you to be not against veils!

Wow, the lace at the top and monogram at the bottom are two ideas I’d never heard of before!

I think that tiara is from the movie “Funny Face” - when they make her up for the first time as a Parisian model.

(Wasn’t she also one of the loveliest brides ever in that movie?)

@Miss Chick: I was going to mention something about how the gems in the replica look stiff and probably won’t lie on your forehead like Audrey’s does. What’s their return policy? You could always buy it and send it back if you don’t like it.

I love all of your veil inspiration! They’re all so classically pretty!

Audrey’s tiara looks more like a necklace that is pinned in. You might give that a try. Just a thought if you are set on it lying flat on your forehead.

@Miss Dachshund: Hi Miss Dachshund!
Good call on looking up the return policy. Here is what they say:
Refunds: Only authorized refunds are allowed. The customer must contact Tiara Town within 5 work days via telephone, fax, or email to receive a refund authorization form. The returned item must be unused and in the original celophone wrapping. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility. A Restocking Fee of $5 will be charged for each item refunded.

I’m thinking maybe not ordering them, and maybe asking someone on etsy to make it? Anyone have any experience with tiara makers on etsy?

You guys are the best! xoxo

I LOVE the monogram idea! And it’s convenient you have the same initial so you don’t have to deal with the “which initial” thought process. That being said, the heavily laced one is gooooooorgeous! I audibly exhaled when I saw it!

@joanlindsay: That is a smart observation! I was trying to figure out what kind of headband would be pliable like that, but you’re probably right in that it’s some kind of a necklace!

I love the Rita veil! I definitely think you should get the tiara. You’re right, it’s not like the typical tiaras that were ubiquitous in the late 90s. It’s very original and chic. I love it!

@Mrs. Mouse: Thanks! My only other reservation is that I don’t want to be like the lady from Dancing with the Stars (she’s one of the singers in the band) who always seems to wear a necklace on her head. Y’all know who I’m talking about? Oh how I can already hear the ridicule from my gays!! :P

Love love love that tiara/head band! It’s so pretty -and I bet you’ll look lovely in it. And your veil will look fantastic - such a great idea … I do like the monogram on the one. Such a different idea!

@LatteLove: Oh, hahah actually I have my dress picked out, but I just need to have it made (it’s in progress) so I don’t technically have it yet in my closet. :( Soon I hope!

Hi Miss Chick! I am another HUGE fan of Audrey, and I actually looked at the Audrey Veil as a potential for my wedding… I adore pearls!

I think if the tiara is still only $36 you may as well buy it, and if you don’t end up wearing it you can always use it for Halloween or something later.

Oh, and that image of Audrey Hepburn appears to be from Roman Holiday. I don’t think she wore it in the movie itself, but she may have in a picture in the movie, or it could have been for publicity for the movie. See this link:
