Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

First, that video of the couple dancing down the aisle to Chris Breezy’s “Forever” made the YouTube and Today Show rounds, so much so that even my parents were talking about it (my dad, in other news, has an iPhone addiction that I still can’t quite wrap my head around). “How fun! Why didn’t we think of this first??” my sister cried, and I agreed, and my dad reasoned that even if we wanted to do something like it, we’d be sooo 2000-and-late. Wah.

And then, that same weekend, SistahChips, Mr. Potato Head, my mom, and I drove by a gloriously hole-in-the-wall bar, a bar that was packed at 4:15 PM, a bar that boasted a sign that said, “Tuesday—Karaoke Night.” And my mom—my MOM—oh wait, is there enough build-up here? My mom is the Portuguese Martha Stewart. My mom shook her head in horror when my dad showed her the YouTube video of the Chris Breezy dancing couple. My mom has been known to roll her eyes and tell me to stop being so “wacky”. My mom was worried, when we first got engaged, that we’d want to elope or get “married in a canoe” (direct quote). That is my mom. Okay, ready?

My mom—MY mom—suggested, “You should have karaoke at the wedding!”

And thus, the greatest idea in the history of weddings—nay, the history of humankind—was born.

Wedding Karaoke! Why did we not think of that? Yes. Absolutely. As soon as I got home I emailed our DJ and asked if they had access to the necessary equipment. And they do! Our announcement of Wedding Karaoke has been met with some shocked silences and a few, “You’re joking? No? Right? Wait, are you joking??”’s, but mostly with high fives, because it is an idea that is chock-full of awesome.

My only regret is that I can’t sing my usual karaoke song (Cher’s “Strong Enough”) lest I am accused of being un-bridal (ehh). I’m currently brainstorming new, more awesome songs, and will start practicing the Christina Aguilera hand and throaty runs.

Mr. Potato Head is no stranger to karaoke, either! Here he is with his brother, professing his love for Sweet Caroline:

Tell me, have you ever experienced Wedding Karaoke? Was it awesome? Or are we crazy (answer: probably yes)?

Ha! BIL and SIL Bruschetta had some impromptu karaoke break out at the end of their wedding reception. Everyone participating, was (how shall I say it?) buzzed and them some by the time they grabbed the mic. Now I really wanna hear you and Mr. Potato Head crooning on BeeTV — any plans to broadcast in the near future?

I think it depends on your crowd. ^_^ I’ve been to one wedding with karaoke. It was…ok. Only a few people sang and they sang fun upbeat songs (…now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure I was up there singing Baby Got Back with everyone else ^_^), which was good, because how many times have you been to karaoke only to have to sit through a bunch of annoying songs? The answer, for me, is far too many.
Maybe a limited number of karaoke songs would help, too, so people aren’t just sitting around flipping through the text book of songs to sing. ^_^

my fiance and I used to always say we were going to have kareoke at our reception, but now that I am actually at the planning stages, I didn’t see how we possibly had enough time to do all the other reception events as well. But I love love love Hayley’s suggestions to do it at the rehearsal dinner!

@Mrs. Bruschetta: ooh girl don’t tempt me!

@SpinningJenny: I agree! Our DJ actually suggested a smaller version of that massive all-encompassing karaoke binder, with the “most popular” songs. And I should note that we’re going to intersperse the ‘roke with regular dancing so people won’t have to sit through song after terribly crooned song!

@stephiemarie: We’re going to intersperse it with the dancing and hopefully there will be time for both!

I went to a reception with karaoke once. It was super fun! I *may* have gotten up there once or twice. ;)

We are totally doing karaoke at the wedding reception. Our music is being provided by a group that does karaoke entertainment. They are going to have the wedidng party sing, and whoever else can sing too. They also sing karaoke throughout the night, so it isn’t just recorded singers. I am so excited for this element of the reception, although we have been met with a couple “Are you serious?” looks. I think it will be great though.

that sounds like a blast! I’ve never been to a karaoke wedding… and that’s probably a good thing for me, since my voice is horrific, but I would love to partake in a celebration like that!

We definitely discussed having karaoke at our reception. I think it would be so fun. We probably won’t because my mom would flip and I think we would have to do it later on in the evening after a lot of the older guests left. I’d be concerned about people drinking too much and karaoke getting inappropriate.

But I still want to risk it.

I’ve been to one where it was a mix of karaoke and regular dancing. My family are karaoke fiends, but the rest of the crowd didn’t really get into it until later in the evening when folks had more liquid courage.

The FI has been to a wedding where they did Karaoke. He said that while the bridal group was taking pictures the DJ went around to the tables and asked people what they thought the greatest Love song was. So people told him and next thing you know he is playing the song and handing them the microphone! FI said that people really got into after the first couple of songs and it was funny to see people who picked crazy songs they really didn’t know or could sing!

i haven’t seen it but i’ve heard of wedding karaoke before. knowing my friends and i, we’ll be singing along to the songs as we dance anyway, with or without a mic.

but knowing me, without a mic would be better. lol

I loooove Karaoke! My FH and I just went to a wedding where the groom owned his own karaoke company. It was so much fun! My only comment is that in order for most people to have the guts to sing in public there usually is alcohol involved. This couple held a dry wedding due to finances. It all worked out, but only a few actually stood up there to belt it out.

I say go for it!! I love the idea!

My fiance has already requested that he get to sing a song or too, karaoke style. We compromised, and he is planning on writing parody lyrics for a song, and perform that. When we told the DJ this, she said, “Oh, are you a good singer?” and my fiance confessed the truth - no, he just loves to do it.
