About Mrs. Star

Yep, we’re procrastinators. But Mr. Star and I got up really early a few days ago to get to the NYC Marriage Bureau when they opened so that we could be legally ready to marry!

It was a shockingly short visit, probably 20 minutes or less. We basically just had to give our contact info, parents’ birthplaces, show our IDs, charge some moolah on my credit card, and away we went! Off into the morning glare with our very official-looking paperwork!

We asked some random lady who was handing out fliers if she would take our picture on the steps. And yes, those are the same steps that we protested in front of just a few months ago.

New York City says we’re ready to go! It all felt very official to be given the go-ahead legally!

Was getting your marriage license a breeze?

Yep, it was easy peasy. In and out of the construction trailer since the county courthouse burnt down three years ago and the new one isn’t finished.

:) We got both our marriage license and our passports the same day….and honestly…think it took us an hour and 45 minutes!!! And then I just got a letter in the mail saying that my passport info wasn’t filled out completely, and had to fill it out again. ;) Good thing we planned in advance!

Congrats Miss Star! I was just on NYC’s city clerk website myself looking all this up, along with the rules on name changes! you’re right, the marriage license process does sound easy breezy for nyc! but i was surprised to read that while you can change your surname upon marriage pretty easily, this doesn’t apply to your middle name… guess that part won’t be as easy :(

Congrats! I hope our process is as painless as yours was. :) Unfortunately I know it will at best be a long, trafficky drive…

Wow, Miss Star - yours may be the only painless experience in the history of dealing with any sort of NYC government office. What a good portent for your marriage!

NO! It definitely wasn’t! MN changed their law and you needed a notarized form from your church to get the pre-marital counseling discount. Our church didn’t give us this so when we first went to apply they turned us away. 2 weeks later we came back with the form then the lady said that the church didn’t write our names correctly on it - they needed to write our full names with middle names, and the church had only written our first and last names. Aaaagh. The lady just let us write the middle names in ourselves finally, but I’m sure that is completely illegal since the form was notarized and we altered it. Oh well, we finally got the license after much drama!

ours was pretty simple too! Although they wouldn’t let a bring the camera into the court house so I had to walk all the way to our car, drop it off, and then could only take a photo of the two of us with my crackberry. Your pic turned out cute!

Ours was a bit bumpy — two visits — since Mr. Bru forgot his ID on our first go at it!

We went today and totally forgot our officiant’s form proving our counseling for $35 off! So we’ll have to go again. I was so sad!

Yay! :) Getting our marriage license wasn’t too bad. We had to wait in line for about 20 minutes, but once we got up to the window, the whole thing only took a couple of minutes.

@BVsmurfette: Yes, I think the name change laws in NYC are vastly outdated. We didn’t change ours on our marriage license because what we’re doing is also too complicated and wasn’t able to be done through the marriage bureau :(

Miss Star, you don’t know me, but I regularly read your blog posts. I’m not even engaged, but I’ve been in so many weddings in the past few years that it’s fun to read blogs and get ideas for my lovely girlfriends. Annnnyway, I digress. I especially like your posts because I myself like in New York City and hope to one day be a Manhattan bride myself. So imagine my surprise this evening as I’m sitting in a cab on 6th Avenue earlier this evening and see a bride and her maids up ahead of me on the sidewalk taking pictures. Well, as we went past, I realized it was you! You looked FANTASTIC and happy and though we’ve never met, I just wanted to extend my deepest congratulations to you and your mister!

Oops, shame on me for not proofreading…I LIVE in New York City, though I do also LIKE it very much, and there are a few other grammatical errors in my previous post, too, but you get my general point. :o) Happy Wedding Day!

@Diana: Aww, that is SO fun! You know, as I was standing out by 6th ave, I was thinking, “I wonder if anyone who reads Weddingbee is watching” because I’ve met a lot of readers just dressed normally, nevermind dressed in white with a crowd watching us get our portraits done! Thanks for the congrats :)
