Thinking About Dresses

October 8th, 2009 @ 5:34 pm by Ms Potato Chips

When my grandmother (my Vavó) and mother came to this country from the Açores, Portugal, my grandmother didn’t speak any English (and never really learned any, come to think of it). Nevertheless, Vavó got a job in the Priscilla of Boston factory (in Boston), sewing the pearls and beads on wedding dresses. My mom’s wedding dress was even a sample from the store window! For those reasons alone, I very much want to shop there, if the whole Filene’s Grumbling-of-the-Bride doesn’t pan out.

And then, there is Drew. Although this dress apparently graced the cover of Modern Bride in 2008, I only just spotted her in the pages of a Fall 2009/Winter 2010 copy of The Knot wedding magazine, paired with ridiculously cute shoes.

I love love love love this dress. Charming and fun and simple and pretty. I think Vavó would agree: muito bonito!

Did your dress shop have any special memory or meaning? With so many boutiques and stores and websites out there, how did you decide where to shop??

wow, your grandmother worked for priscilla of boston? that makes for some sentimentality!

no personal connections myself but all i know is that i’m NOT shopping at david’s bridal. i had a bad experience as a bridesmaid and vowed never to return.

Hahaha, my intention with the dresses WAS sentimental - but I ended up going to salons that were convenient :)

That is DARLING! I really, really, really wanted a tea-length dress (much to my mother’s dismay); however, when I started shopping the two stores I visited didn’t have any. And I fell in love with mine, so all was well!

I just Googled for the shops I went to - and asked around for ladies that have already been married.

That dress is super cute!! If you are a short dress bride kinda girl… im not sure it gets any better than that!! I am not a short dress kinda bride (figure, personality etc) but even I want it!!

As far as choosing stores, some of us not living near big cities have a lot more limits on our options…. but then again, it can be uber helpful if youve got a small budget. At the fanciest store I could find, I tried on 1 dress that was more than 1K. Kleinfelds would not do well in my neck of the woods. :)

I found my dress in a locally owned shop, that made me feel so welcome and #1 the entire time I was there. When it came down to buying my dress (that I found there), I couldn’t go anywhere else.

I think that is so super awesome that you are getting a PoB dress in honor of your grandmother. I used yelp.com to find stores that people spoke highly of. It worked out pretty well for me.

Super cute! I actually went shopping at the priscilla of boston recently while I was in Boston, and I think I saw the factory (or one of them) in somerville.

That is so cool that your grandmother worked for them! This is a very cute dress…if I had the body for it I would go for it or any other short wedding gown! :)

Wow, it’s gorgeous and sophisticated, but also fun and flirty! And seems like a shorter style would fit your petite frame well. :-)

LOVE the dress! It’s perky like you! And I love that your Vavo and mother’s history with PoB, too. It would be great if you could wear one, if not that very one!

I visited that island (I don’t know how to type the fancy accent marks that go along with the actual spelling of the word) of Portugal with some friends a couple summers ago. Absolutely gorgeous!

Anyways, super cute dress!
