Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.

Slouching of the Brides

October 9th, 2009 @ 1:14 pm by Ms Potato Chips

So. The Running of the Brides.

First of all, I don’t know what would possess ANYONE to go at 7 in the morning with the crazies. There was minimal to no running involved for us, only some light scrambling to find parking and quarters for the meter. Other than that: no running. Sauntering, maybe, a wee bit. And the occasional grumbling.

Accompanying me on my quest was a motley crew willing to sift through racks and help me step into poufy dresses—six of us in all, including mum. I lured them there on the pretext of copious post-RotB snacking.

We arrived around 1:30ish and the Hynes Convention Center was not at all crowded. Just full of racks. Racks and racks of Big. Poufy. Dresses. We commandeered a corner (with a platform) and a mirror. The first dress I put on was simple and short, hurrah! Transformed into a beautiful bride, I looked up at my friends and family to see their reaction. Everyone burst into laughter. Wah. Multiply that by 100 and that was how the afternoon went.

Oh you want a montage? And you want it set to “Shake Your Groove Thing”? Press “play”. Ready? Go.

In the following photos, you may see My Dream Dress.

Could it be this ’80s throwback?

1

A thumbs-up? Or my junior year prom dress reincarnated?

2

Some dresses were just delightful!

3

Oh no! Too big up top! A first for me!

4

Like Cinderella! Or a cupcake.

5

Sassy a la Carrie Bradshaw

6

A special day requires a special crown

7

A peek-a-boo sensation! Designed for Amazonians, or those over the five-foot-sector.

8

Smart, sassy, and all business.

9

Even my married friends joined in on the fun!

1-

I bet you’re wondering which one I picked. I’ll give you a clue: it’s the pantsuit!

Kidding, kidding…

My dress search will be continued in another post or two for maximum awesomeness.

Such great pictures! Unfortch, I can’t see the video (at work). I’ll check it out when I get home — the comments about it make it irresistible!

@Miss French Fries: The video is the song “Shake Your Groove Thing.” Maybe try singing it in your head or under your breath as you scroll through, to enhance the experience. =)

I was going to be like you and go later in the day, but my mom got this crazed look in her eyes the night before and made us get there at 6am. It was insane, but I wouldn’t trade the experience I had with my mom for anything. She doesn’t live near me and so this is one of her big stroeis from weding planning and she got to be there for when I found my dress. We were in such a rush that we didnt think to take pics of all the crazy dresses I tried on like you did. Wish I had some pics of those. Glad you had fun and I”m pretty sure I had some of those pink dresses at some point.

@lwittick: Good on you! The 6 a.m. experience is definitely worth it for ambitious shoppers! I actually liked some of the pink dresses; they just looked like too much on my short frame.

I love your photo montage - you like you had a lot of fun! Major props for “running” - if I ever went my crew would probably find me huddled in a corner somewhere, lol.

I went last Spring…not at 6 am, but at 1:30ish. The girls were….interesting. When I showed up, there wasn’t a huge crowd, but the girls that were there were so territorial about the 15+ dresses that they were holding onto. If I so much as came near their stash, they would snap that those were their dresses.

You definetly have to the ROTB with an open mind and LOTS of patience ;-)

Is it bad that I think that pantsuit is awesome on you? Not exactly down the aisle material but you’ve got to find some event in life that would work at right???
