Long Table Inspiration

October 12th, 2009 @ 5:10 pm by Mrs. Lamb

I attended 7 weddings last year. Prior to last year, I was gaga over weddings. I would get bridal magazines in the airport on business trips so no one would know. I would chat with Ewe Mom and rip out ads to save in a folder she kept. It was clandestine, pre-ring wedding planning. More on this topic later, but for now, just know that I loved long tables since I was clandestine wedding planning. Also know that I have yet to be at a reception featuring any other table shape than round.

These are the reasons why I fell in love with long tables:

So I know that I love the long tables, but how do you execute them without going to the poor farm??? That, my dear Watson, is precisely the question. Of course, towering candelabras and to-the-ceiling flowers would be exquisite.

Side note: Where in the world are there venues that let you have open flames? Because, seriously, every venue that we looked into had a hurricane policy where you had to cover up your lovely tapers with glass. End side note.

However, the costs associated with these gigantic statements would be a glass too tall for me to drink.

I could care less about real flowers, which is going to save me a lot of dough on the bouquets and bouts. My penny-pinching-self loved this idea so much that I decided I didn’t want or need real flowers on the tables, either.

Instead, Miss Lamb Planner (my coordinator) and I are working on a tablescape that includes lots of candles and cake. Yes! lots of cake! Now that’s my kind of centerpiece.

The working idea, at the moment, is to feature small cakes on the tables as centerpieces. Something along the lines of this:

Before buying a lot of cake stands, I wanted to experiment making my own with candlesticks and plates. I had seen these around other places like Etsy and could see them working out. I went to the thrift store and picked up 6 pressed glass candlesticks for $5.23 (yay!).

For your viewing pleasure, I did a mock arrangement on my short table:

I just lined these bad boys up, and then added my clear everyday dishes.

The idea is to buy some pressed glass plates/platters from thrift stores to use at the tops. I haven’t figured out yet if I should glue them together, or just balance them so that you can easily remove them to cut the cake and make them easier to transport in general. Can you imagine these a little further apart with lots of candles? Oh, the sparkle!

I’m liking where this is going. I have another element that I want to introduce to the tables for even more height! I’m starting to feel a little Sandra Lee coming on - I just love me some tablescapes.

Have you thought about having tables in shapes other than round? What ways have you considered decorating your tables outside of the flower realm?

I love this idea! We’re doing round tables to make talking easier, but are also going to use cakes as centerpieces. I’m buying vintage stands and painting them all the same color. I’m intrigued by making stands myself…keep us updated on how the gluing goes if you decide to do that. Good luck!

There is a putty you can use to stick the two together and that would probably be safer than the balancing act! Cute idea!

I can’t believe I’ve never thought of using candle stands with plates to make cake stands! Very clever. Makes serving so much easier because the plates can be put on a lower surface.

I’d worry about the balancing.
We did long tables and mostly used water/candles to decorate. It looked so pretty once it got dark. We had some flowers, but they were only the ceremony flowers we moved inside.

I would absolutely recommend using a really strong adhesive like epoxy to stabilize these! Just think - as soon as the first person bumps the table getting into or out of their chair (which is always a little awkward enough at long tables) that cake is going to fall. :(

Better yet, in the future, using drinking glasses as bases (i.e. with the bottom of the glass glued to the bottom of the cake plate) would be the best because it would provide a larger bottom for stability.

I love long tables too! We’re hoping to have them at our venue, but the peeps there have said they only work if we have less than 100 guests (we’ll have around 120-130). But here’s hoping we can make it happen.

I like where you’re going with your Sandra-Lee-tablescapes! That’ll look so pretty and streamlined. And hello, cakes as centerpiece!

That’s a pretty narrow point of contact, but they are super cute. I’ve seen upside down bowls used, maybe that would help with stability.

nice inspiration photos! i would definitely adhere them with some sort of adhesive/epoxy for various reasons like not so dainty guests bumping into them [if i were a guest there's a good chance i would be the not so dainty guest]. also, would they be serving from the cake on the table? if so then yes, adhere! the guests might not know to take the plate off and try to cut it right there, causing the whole thing to tumble if they’re reflexes aren’t quite up to snuff.

I actually JUST did this! I used epoxy to attach the plates to the candle sticks and it worked great! I spray painted mine black for my Halloween party but the epoxy dries clear so it should work for your pressed glass plates!

I would use a piece of tape on the top of the plate to mark the center, then place the plate face down and attach the candle stick.

Good luck!

Long tables are perfect! We are doing the same and trying to come up with some type of table scape. The cakes will be a great addition to your table!

I am right there with you. I LOVE long tables. I am doing them at my reception. I am still trying to decide how to decorate, but I know I will have tons of candles. Fortunately for me, the restaurant my reception is at allows for open flames. I am probably doing short flower arrangments with pillar candles (varying heights) in between.

Love the look of the cake plates!

I adore long rectangular tables. I think they work so much better for conversation and they are so much easier to work with from a design mindset!

I love your idea for decorating long tables without flowers, and I love the way you’re creating the cake holders! Looks elegant and it should save you tons of $$!

Ahhh . . . yes, in hindsight, drinking glasses would provide more stability - see Mrs. Cheese’s post to confirm, LOL. It’s a small blog world :)
