Mice in Europe: Paris Part I

October 13th, 2009 @ 2:57 pm by Mrs. Mouse

Why hello there, hive. It’s good to be back!

Look, it’s candy mice! Right in between candy swans and candy piglets! I saw these at a chocolate shop in Paris and couldn’t resist taking a picture.

Now that I’ve distracted you with cuteness, my recaps can officially begin! I’m going to start with our European honeymoon. Originally we wanted to go to Greece, but we decided it would be fun to throw in a few nights in Paris and then take a train through France and Italy, stopping in Milan for one night. After Milan, we flew to Greece, where we spent a week traveling to two islands and then finished up the trip in Athens.

The Dude and I brought our Flip video cameras that we purchased for the wedding along with us, in addition to a regular camera. So along with our photos, I will also be sharing at least one video per post with you guys. But you have to make it to the end of the post to get to the video(s)! OK, without further ado…

The day after our wedding, we filled up two giant backpacks, got in the car, and headed to Fort Worth. We were supposed to spend the night with the Dude’s cousin, but he forgot and somehow ended up in Oklahoma! So we got to stay at a beautiful hotel in downtown FW, the Ashton. We caught our flight the next day at DFW and spent the next 9 hours or so on a plane. We arrived in London around 8AM, and had to immediately catch our flight to Paris.

Once in Paris, we hopped on the train and took it all the way in to the city, near our hotel.

Here’s a picture of the Dude to show you just how jet lagged we were at this point.

We checked into our boutique hotel, freaked out over how beautiful our room was, and then proceeded to check our email on our room’s flat panel TV.

Yeah, we were pretty impressed by the Versace tile in the bathroom.

Even though the bed was so tempting, we rallied and headed over to the Eiffel Tower instead of taking what would have been a glorious nap. I had been to Paris before, and the Dude hadn’t. He convinced me to go up in the Eiffel Tower—something I had never done before—even though I was terrified.

On our way to the Eiffel Tower, something very bad and unexpected happened. My camera battery died! Unfortunately I have no more pictures of our first day in Paris, but I do have some video and a pretty cool story.

Here’s some video of the view from the glass elevator that took us to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

After we came back down, I needed something to revive me, so we headed over to a little cafe, Cafe Central, and we each had a glass of wine. We wandered around and found another sidewalk cafe for dinner, where I ordered the mussels and got a GIANT POT of mussels. I must have eaten at least 50 of them, and the bowl was still 3/4 full! At some point, it started to rain on us, so we moved inside and had dessert and espresso. By that, I mean the Dude had dessert and I had espresso. :)

Once the rain cleared up a bit, we tried to make it back to our hotel. Instead, we ended up getting lost on the windy streets and going in the opposite direction of our hotel. Then the sky opened up again, and we got caught in the (very cold) rain. We ducked into a doorway and huddled there for warmth, trying to look at our laminated map to figure our where we went wrong. I finally convinced the Dude that we should wait for a cab at the taxi stand. We hopped in the cab, got back to our hotel, and headed up to our room like two drowned (and very, very jet lagged) rats. Sleep was oh-so-good that night.

I’ll leave you with one last video.

Paris is fabulous! Can I ask what hotel you stayed at? We’re going to Paris and London for our honeymoon and are looking for hotel suggestions. Thanks!

the videos are so cute! I’m sure they’re great memories now :-)

We had a lot of adventures (some of them involving mussels, getting lost and rain) when we were in Italy!

@betagrl: Hotel Ares Eifel. We loved it and would definitely recommend staying there. Kinda pricey, but worth it.

@betagrl:
Another option to consider (what we plan on doing) is renting apts. Seriously. Check out vrbo.com and I have more sites if you’re interested.

Ah marzipan candies! I always used to beg my parents to buy these for me at Harrods and in Munich. They look much prettier than they taste. I love marzipan, don’t get me wrong, but a big ol’ hunk of it is a little much.

Wonderful recap, lady. :)

Yay for recaps, pictures and video! And I totally feel you on the dead battery, when we headed to Disney after our engagement my battery died, and this was after I had a dream about it dying and purchased an extra to be on the safe side… too bad I left that extra one at the hotel lol

@betagrl: Me and the furture Mr. were in Paris for a week back in September.

We took a ‘risk’ and booked through hotwire. But if you do a little digging you can look at what the trip advisor rating is, how many stars the property rated and the amenities you can often figure out what hotel they’re putting you in.

I don’t know what your budget is for a room but we stayed at the Westin near the Louvre and I couldn’t recommend a better location. Metro is just over a block away, plenty of shops and restaurants. We payed $249 a night through hotwire (the rooms start at $400 a night)

The future Mr. also sent an email to the hotel concierge and told them we’d be there for a celebration. They gave us a room with a view of tuileries and the Eiffel tower and we had a bottle of wine waiting for us.

I completely recommend splurging on a room in Paris.

I had a boyfriend once who called me kitten … and his parents bought me a set of Marzipan mice for Christmas one year! They’re tasty - but oh so sweet! I’m loving your recaps already - how fun!!

What a shame about your battery, but at least you have some cute videos of your first day! Hopefully it didn’t rain the entire trip :)
