Tattoo Cover Up: Take One

October 13th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Miss Frozen Yogurt

So you may remember that I am having a little trouble figuring out what to do about my tattoo on my wedding day. Said tattoo has been a source of stress for me for some time. Well, I finally decided to start trying out some options for covering it up. But let’s see it before:

tattoo2

Try not to make fun, I’m already sad about it.

Anyway, I went to Sephora and told them about what I was hoping to accomplish and they sent me home with samples of Kat Von D’s tattoo makeup cover up. The cover up makeup can be pretty pricey, so I was so happy I got try it out for free before spending the cash. I was eager to get home and try it out immediately.

However, you can see it’s in a little bit of an awkward spot for me to reach, so I asked my at home makeup artist, Mr. Fro Yo (actually, he is not at all versed in the ways of makeup) to help me try to cover it up. He applied a little, and then we waited for it to dry, and then we put some powder on it to set it.

Well, apparently we applied too much or I was sent home with the wrong color or maybe its that my makeup artist isn’t much of a makeup artist. Needless to say, it was not a good trial.

I’m not giving up on the Kat Von D. They did give me a lighter shade to try, and maybe I can combine the two to try to get the correct color. Stay tuned for the next trial!

This same thing happened to me! I used Cover FX and this other tattoo covering kit I got from David’s Bridal and while it looked really natural and covered amazingly well in person, I was horrified to get all my wedding pictures back and see these white bands on my upper arms where the makeup was! They were so white, they were practically reflective in some pictures. I was crushed. I had to spend hours and hours photoshopping every picture of me taken. For me, they matched the makeup shades perfectly but in pictures, it was just terrible. Keep experimenting and definitely take pictures of it before to see what the lighting/flash/etc does to the makeup. Good luck!

it does a great job of covering it up! the tattoo isn’t showing through at all. i think you’re right, you just have to find the right shade, which i’m sure you will.

I honestly couldn’t tell in the first picture where your tatoo was, I think if you add a teeny bit of bronzer, you wouldn’t be able to tell AT ALL!

I had a hard time figuring out where it was in the first picture, but when I looked closer, I could tell. I have a feeling that if you mix to get the right shade, it’ll be perfect! Good luck!

Okay, i’m going to try this as well.

Did you have Mr. Fro Yo use a foundation brush to blend it? Er, on second thought… maybe get a girlfriend to try this.

Spread it out a bit and blend with the brush, then set it with some powder, and cover further with some bronzer.

I need to take my own advice.

Just leave the tattoo! I think it will look worse covered up….cuz no matter what, you’ll probably still see the cover-up….. :)

I haven’t heard good things about the Kat von D stuff, tbh. It typically produces effects, well, like yours! :p

I’ve heard that MUFE does good things.

I’m in the same boat! I’m going to start my rounds b/c I have 2 that need to go for our big day. I’ve been thinking about hiring an airbrush artist to do my make up that day if they can also caover up my ink ;)

weird question - why is it on 2 different sides? In teh top photo, it is on teh right sholderblade, and in teh covered ones its on the left lol. Did the image get flipped? or mirror?

Either way, maybe he covred up too large an area? A friend of mine covered hers but painted the makeup (not sure what she used) only on the actual inked areas. Covered it with bronzer and shimmer and you couldnt see it at all (and the photog did some photoshopping to be sure in photos too)

I would try the lighter colors and have a girlfriend who will be there with you on the big day (preferably one who’s makeup you actually admire) to help you attempt the trial and the acutal day. The key is blending as you go and not caking on. A good foundation brush will be your best friend for this.

I’m sorry the trial didn’t go as you had hoped, but I think you’re on the right track. I bet if you got the right shade, that would work for you.

If you are going to spend the money covering it up and you dont like it that much. I would consider laser removal. There are laser schools that will do each session for about $50.00 a pop. 3 sessions and you are DONE…It will be gone forever:)

@KellyV: Yeah, as colleen said it’s flipped because I took the first one in a mirror and the ones with cover up mr. fro yo took. I meant to mention that, sorry!

Yeah, this trial was a fail, but I need to ask someone that is skilled in make up to try it out and use the right tools, as opposed to our fingers and see what happens. I’m not giving up yet!

If you have a sephora nearby, they might be able to help you. I know there are specific brands and products that are meant to do well in photography since a lot of makeup will turn white or reflective! If you need suggestions, I have a friend who is a model/makeup artist and she might be able to give you a list to try!

don’t forget that your photographer can blur that out if its mostly the pictures you are worried about!

Once you get the makeup shade right - try wearing it around for a whole day - see if it runs when you sweat! You wouldn’t want it all over your dress!

Yeah I’ve heard not so good things about the Kat von D stuff. There is actually a post floating around (or maybe it was an article someone sent me) where they show the published pic of Kat with her cover up on and then the pre-photoshopped version of the picture where you can totally see that white-ish effect you’re getting. False advertising much! Good luck!

Mrs. Fro Yo don’t forget that photoshop works wonders so I wouldn’t be concerned with the way it looks in photos as much as how it looks in person.

Have you tried any theater makeup? That stuff is thicker then regular makeup and covers really well. Just a thought.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you find works!

I was totally confused thinking “need a different shade? I cant see it at all!!!” Then i read the questions and response about it being on the other side due to mirror usage. I agree with everyone else that its done a great job covering, just need to get the right shade.

Have you tried DermaBlend? I knew of someone who used it to cover birthmarks on her face with great results. I have a small tattoo on my left hand that I wanted to cover for a job interview, so I gave it a try and it worked very well.

what about a cream concealer? not liquid in a jar i am talking cream concealers that are in a compact that you use a sponge applicator to put on. you have to cover the black ink up with a warm chase like an orange first, then cover it up in shades that are closer to yours. then seal.

you will get it right dont worry.

@fiftyfootbride: I need to try that, thanks for the suggestion!
@vintage2010: Definitely need to try that too!
@Kandes: I’ve heard great things about dermablend. I need to just go on a hunt one day and buy out all the tattoo cover up and see what works best in person and on film.

Demablend works for all of our bridesmaids on my wedding day. Heck they used it to cover their whole lower back at the beach in front of conservative parents and no one even noticed!

I’m not even sure this cover-up makeup looks good on Kat Von D… check out the non-airbrushed pic of here after her ad-shoot:

Do a quick google search for “kat von d tattoo photoshop” and you can see how poorly the pros get the cover up to work. I definitely think a different brand is a good idea. Good luck!

I have a 5-6 inch tattoo on my shoulder, dark blues, greens, and reds. I went to a Mac shop, and they used red lipliner, concealer and powder and you couldn’t see a thing!! Plus, they showed my sister how to apply the makeup day of for me. You’re still able to slightly see the shape of it because the skin is slightly raised but no color shows at all. You can’t see it in any of my pics!

i think ulta and jc penny carry dermablend. It works well and is reasonably priced.

Macy’s also carries DermaBlend, though it isn’t cheap and you may need to buy two tubes to blend to your skin tone.

AWww - good luck - but honestly, it doesn’t look bad without covering it up and might just look better in the end.

I’m sure you’ll get it right in time for your wedding! I second the idea of painting it just on where you have ink and not the surrounding areas like KellyV said, I’ve heard that works alot better.
