Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

Wedding flowers? Do.not.care.

No, seriously, I couldn’t tell a petunia from a peony.

Can’t we just grab whatever from the garden?

You pick, Mom, and I’m sure they’ll be fine.

The hell is a ranunculus?

Huh. This magazine about wedding flowers looks cool. Guess I’ll flip through it.

Um, what are these ruffly, squishable plump pillows of loveliness?

Uhh.mah.gawww. So pretty! So fat! So lush! I want to eat them!!

Peonies! I wonder if they available in June?

I MUST HAVE PEONIES!!!

PEONIES EVERYWHERE!!!!

Look, when it comes down to it, the only thing that matters to me are PEONIES. Everywhere!!!!!

Uh, P.Chips? You might want to take it down it down a notch. You’re getting a little weird about the peonies.

In a word? YES!

When I started planning, I told myself that the groom, the venue, and the dress were the only super important things to me.

Unfortunately, when I started looking at ideas for things I thought I’d never care about (flowers, cakes, cake stands, STDs, invitations, etc) I inevitably found cute personal touches I had to have. Whoops.

Miss Chips, you might also take a look at old fashioned cabbage roses. Bellenga just posted about them elsewhere, with pics. Peonies and garden roses look very similar. IOW, Gor-Juss!

Oh Ms. Potato Chips, your post made me laugh! I am slowly evolving to care more about flowers, and your little monologue definitely reminded me of myself! At first I had NO CLUE about flowers - but looking at pics here on Wedding Bee and on the internet are starting to give me a clue about what might be nice. Really though, any bouquet will look nice (or at least that is what I tell myself!).

I also have been noticing peonies as of late - as a fellow June bride, did you find out if they were available?

I also really like green hydrangeas…uh oh, maybe I care more than my nonchalant note seems to admit!

Oh my gosh, I rarely comment on WB, but you pretty much wrote exactly what I went through with flowers on my wedding day!

Peonies are not in season when I had my wedding in January. My awesome wedding coordinator happened to be at Bristol Farms 2 days before my wedding and found some pink ones - my wedding color! It was amazing!

So I know exactly how you feel!

I am so with you on going from knowing nothing about flowers to being peony-obsessed! FYI, the first photo you posted is actually a bouquet of cabbage roses. I’ve been obsessed with that bouquet too and also originally thought it was peonies. Good thing for me though, because peonies are out of season for my wedding but cabbage roses are not! :)

Your post made me laugh out aloud. I swear, Weddingbee could be it’s own economic stimulus package. Before I joined, I had no idea about some now obsessions:

* Contemporary Vintage Engagement Shoots
* Boudoir Photo Shoots
* Letterpress Invites (eco-friendly)
* Birdcage veils

I think I’ve gone through this exact same set of stages. At first I was all, “Screw flowers. Want more CAKE.”

Now I sing a different tune.

I’ve always had a thing for peonies. Always. Before I even know what they were called. Specifically pink peonies… any shade of pink. I <3 peonies so much. So, I love the photos you posted.

Many new obsessions, including flowers. Cake. Chairs. Tablecloths. Hor’s d’oeuvre. Peonies are gorgeous, but I second taking a look at garden roses.

I’ve done the same thing–there were things I really cared about during the planning process that I never would have noticed before. I had a minor meltdown because I thought that our venue only had white napkins instead of ivory napkins. Thankfully, I was wrong (we got the ivory), but a year before I would have never even noticed the difference between white and ivory napkins!

I love Peonies too! I met with a florist today and he actually said, “I get it, you like the Peonies”. Yes I do. I want them in my bouquet.

I’m getting married in July and 3 different florists have told me different stories of when Peonies are in season. I don’t care as long as my bouquet has Peonies in it.

Miss Chips, you crack me up. You’ve very quickly become my all time favorite bee. I love your writing style and can totally relate with a whole lot of what you’re talking about (though I’m not actually engaged, just a groupie-bee!) Also, you wrote about your birthday month on my actual birthday - (my boyfriend has been telling folks that we’ve just completed eight days and nights of Jennukah. I firmly believe in birthday weeks as well.) I just wanted to say thanks and let you know how much I’ve been enjoying your posts!

Miss Potato Chips,
You make me laugh. I giggled out loud when I read this post.

I love flowers, so I never had a convo with myself like that, but many other topics have caused talks with myself exactly like yours!

I have a similar obsession with ranunculas, which are non available in the Fall. Which, leaves me to not care about flowers anymore. Le sigh.

Tee hee. PC, you turned from a totally laid back bride into a crazy peony bridezilla :-) …I think you’re not the first bride to have been affected by the peony syndrome. I have managed to stay away from the peonies in our own flower scheme in favor of local (and cheaper!) flowers, but it has been *hard* to ignore those lovely pillows of fluffiness.

I didn’t give two craps about flowers until one day at the farmer’s market, I came across peonies. I took five of them home with me, put them in a vase, and from that day forward…….

Well, you know the story… MUST. HAVE!

Listen, P. Chips, let me tell you something. Some of the best conversations are the ones you have with yourself. I even do two-way conversations (particularly when I want to tell someone off) where I do my part, and have the other person react, then I react to their reaction… get it?

My new-for-the-wedding obsession? Ummmm… flower girl dresses? We’re having two, and I don’t want them in white or ivory or poofiness or taffeta or gag-me-sweetness. You know how hard it is to satisfy those requirements? Lawdy, lawdy.

Slooooowwwly plugging through my GoogleReader, but I HAD to comment here. I had the same conversation about flowers! Our florist is right next to the airport, so it was always the first stop when I flew into down. Groggy, my mom would drag me into the florist, I’d nod, agree, insist I really DID NOT CARE about the flowers. I’d wake up later that night with no way of describing to my fiancee what I’d seen that day, but I assured him it was fine. Lovely.

Cue the week of the wedding. I changed my bouquet three times. By phone. From NewYork to Florida. My florist was telling me that the flowers I saw online were misnamed, and we started emailing screenshots and pictures to each other. Suddenly, very little mattered more to me.

Where did that crazy person come from? Not sure - but I love the bouquet I ended up with!
