Mrs. Frozen Yogurt's Picture
Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, Dallas Age and Occupation: 28, Special Projects Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity Trader Engagement Date: March 19, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Marie Gabrielle, Dallas About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.
About Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Inspired by Trees

October 14th, 2009 @ 2:01 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

So remember when I was struggling with what to do for the wedding card holder? Well, all of you had amazing ideas, but there was one in particular that stuck with me. It was Mrs. Bruschetta’s idea about a paper mache tree that they did for her brother’s wedding. Now, I knew there was no way I could create a paper mache tree that I would want anyone to see, but the tree idea stuck with me.

You see, we are getting married under trees, and we have some manzanita branch centerpieces, so I thought it was fitting, but I couldn’t figure out how to make this idea work. And then I saw this:

Inspired by Trees : wedding decor 110 tree stump

Source

It’s a hollowed out tree stump with a slit on top for cards with the couple’s initials carved in. So, basically perfect. The problem? I immediately asked Mr. Fro Yo if he could make this for me. I even argued that we had a saw. That’s where he laughed at me and told me that it would take a lot more than a saw to hollow out a tree. Hmm… he’s right. But now I cannot get this idea out of my head, and every other idea I’ve come up with can’t even compete with this.

So hive, I’ve come to you. Where oh where might I find something like this? Did you have a wedding project that you couldn’t figure out how to implement? What did you do?

Post an alchemy request on Etsy- that’s how I got my gorgeous tree stump cake stand and birch candle holders. You can even post that picture to give them an idea of what you are looking for. LOVE Etsy!

that is an amazing card box! If i would have know this existed or thought of it myself I would have been all over it like a flea on poo!

I looked a little online…you might have some options. (if you buy you can always resell, I’m sure that would a be a popular item on the classifieds!

That’s a pretty awesome looking tree-stump card box.
I’d go to a local woodworking shop or hardware store, but not a big box one, and ask them how to do it.

You could also buy a dried/cured stump, get some wood carving tools, and then hollow the beast out yourselves? Then dremel(sp?) tool the inside to smooth it.

My father does woodworking as a hobby/aside. He’s made all of the beds in our 3 houses, etc. Ridonk. If you want, I can ask him how to do it. He’s a wood genie. Just PM if you want me to. :p

You could also maybe see if the local community college has a wood-working class, get in touch with the instructor, and see if you could commission this piece. It’s a neat idea :)

Try Alchemy on Etsy. Seriously… that’s how I got two wood cake stands for our wedding. It’s amazing who will reach out to you, and it’s a heck of a lot easier than trying to wade through all of the vendors! Make sure to post your inspiration pic so they know exactly what you’re looking for from the ad. My favorite vendor to deal with was WoodDesigner. Tell him I sent you if you chat with him!

Another idea… contact the source of the photo to see if they would ask the couple where they got theirs. It seems like they’re usually willing to help.

I would try to contact a local high school or college that has shop class. They should have the tools to do it and they might even do it for free if they can use your project as a teaching tool.

Hmm, well is it the concept that you love or that it is a stump? If it is a conceptual thing I suggest getting crafty (I’ve made these flower containers with students before and they come out cute, I am sure this can be modified to meet your needs as well) Start with whatever size container you want to use–a have many large column shaped glass vases that would work. At local craft stores or in your own backyard collect birch bark, I use bitch because it is easy to use and frankly I find it pretty. Glue the strips of birch bark to the container until it is completly covered. I like to leave some frayed edges for texture. Again at a craft store or florist buy some pretty peet moss ribbon to tir around the middle with a big bow and you have a simple container to keep whatever you desire. If you like the initals like the stump pictured you could tie a tree cookie with your initals on it as well all though I think I would find that to busy. Good luck! : )

If I were you, I’d see if you couldn’t do it yourselves! It won’t take that much work. First of all, you’re going to need dried wood, not fresh off the tree–try calling a place that sells fireplace wood and ask if you could buy a large piece before it’s split. Next, try hollowing it out in small sections with a jigsaw–it doesn’t have to be hollowed out entirely, right? I mean, if it’s a little heavy, it will just help your cards stay on the table!

Barring that, I second the Alchemy request, or find a local woodworker. Good luck!

@Miss Moonbeam: We have an outdoor covered deck, so maybe it will sit out there? A friend already asked if she could borrow it for her wedding if I get it, and of course I said yes! Hope she doesn’t mind our initials!
@AbbieOinCO: I learned that the bride’s husband made the original one. Lucky girl!
