Put You on a Pedestal

October 14th, 2009 @ 5:20 pm by Mrs. French Fries

When I originally discussed our decision for our cake, I noted that I really wanted to get a simple white cake stand to fit the cake. I had discussed this with the first baker we met with, and found out that the stand needed to be 16″ in diameter, since the bottom tier would be 14″. So, I began to search for cake stands/pedestals in earnest. And, well… I came up short (or should I say, “small in diameter”).

Common sizes for cake stands are as follows: 8″, 10″, and 12″. Very rarely do you find them larger than 12″ around. I looked first at Martha Stewart’s cake stands for Macy’s. Hers only go up to 12″, but they’re beautifully simple; something that I was really looking for.

But again, it was only a 12″ stand. Onward! I did a few web searches for cake stands, and still didn’t find much that I liked. There was, of course, the ubiquitous silver or gold metal cake stands that are typically used for weddings, but if I wanted one of those, I would just save myself the hassle and rent one from our baker.

Next, I went to Etsy. Old faithful. The standby. The one that always seems to come through. I found several beautiful cake stands by Etsy seller whitneysmith. Observe:

This red one has a beautifully scalloped edge. Of course, red isn’t one of our “colors”, but it is beautiful nonetheless, and a tad too small for what we need.

This one has beautiful flowers around the edge of it — very wedding-ish, in my opinion. Yellow isn’t one of our colors, either, but it would look beautiful against the off-white of our cake. It’s also not quite big enough. Gah.

And, finally — the one that my heart longs for: this beautiful cake stand with birds perched upon the edges of the stand. So cute. So sweet. So perfect. But also? Too small. Curses! Foiled again!

So, I posted an Alchemy post on Etsy, listing exactly what I’m looking for. In my case, I wanted something simple. Ceramic. Potentially glazed in light pink. And, the most important part: 16″ in diameter. I’m hoping that a seller will come through and contact me, but in the meantime, the search continues!

Did you use a cake stand for your wedding cake? Did you do something else entirely?

I was looking for cake stands about 4 months ago for a Bridal Shower that I was working on. I found some amazing cake stands at Home Goods, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. I think the most expensive one was 19.99. You should check there if you haven’t chosen one yet. Good Luck!!

I had the same problem. Williams and Sonoma carry them in 16” but they are all white. I was able to find a white ceramic cake stand there around the holidays with the cutest little ruffle edge. The best part was it was marked down to $19.99. The process to find this is tough just keep your eyes peeled on places like su la table, williams and sonoma, etc.

I so wanted a cake stand, but also a tall skinny cake. For the safety of the cake I didn’t get a stand but I sooo love them!

My cousin Tiff was having such a tough time finding pretty cake stands that also worked for her logistically. We went back and forth for weeks about the choices, and she ended up using some awesome black rococo-styled ones! I recently posted a round-up of about 25 different options, most of which I discovered while helping her look :)

We did an Alchemy request for a wood slab/stand and ended up accepting two. We love both and found Alchemy to be such an easy way to do business, rather than wading through all of the vendors. Plus, we had one vendor come through with a gorgeous piece, and their shop didn’t even sell that kind of thing. So glad we did it. Even though I posted inspiration pics, we did get a few odd replies that were clearly not what we were looking for. Give it a few days for the replies to trickle in… I found some of the best responses didn’t happen immediately.

ours is provided by our venu, but is still very pretty! I did however almost pick one up this weekend at the mall, but the Mr. was quick to point out that I never have a chance to bake anymore, damn wedding projects :)

I love that first cake stand. And the last one. They’re both so simple and sweet.

When I met with my cake baker, I told her I wanted a wood slab for the cake stand. She just so happened to have a friend over whose husband was clearing some cypress from their land and the friend offered to cut me a cake stand! It worked out perfectly! (:

We didn’t use a cake stand for our cake, but I have a couple because I love to bake. My most recent cake stand find was from a flea market actually. I hope you find what you’re looking for!

Hopefully Alchemy will come through for you!! We had a tough time with ours…not for diameter but for height…we only had a 2 tier cake (b/c we were also doing pies and a tart) so I wanted a tall cake stand to show off the 2 tier cake…tall are also tough to come by. Finally found one made by Potluck Sudios…they have beautiful things. Best of luck!

I don’t even remember what the hotel used for our hideous cake, but I’d like to think if it was sitting on something as pretty as that flower stand you have up there, that it might have been almost okay!

Ooooooooh, love the light yellow with the dogwood. Never thought of going to Etsy for a cake stand. Something to file away just in case. Thanks for the tip!

Good call on Etsy. We plan on doing something similar, and I plan on doing an Etsy Alchemy to get what we need!
