I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!

Why I Scheduled a January Wedding…

October 14th, 2009 @ 3:42 pm by Mrs. Lamb

… it’s long after softball season!

Check out my shiner:

Why I Scheduled a January Wedding... : wedding beauty Dsc0175

This is after 5 days too. There’s nothing more to the story than I foul-tipped into my own face. Awesome. Last at bat, last game of the season. Can I repeat, awesome?

This pic was the one I took the day after it happened. It didn’t really seem to be showing up very well though - for whatever reason it looked much worse under the fluorescent lighting at work.

After I took the pic and began to crop it in Photoshop, I figured I’d give you the unedited version so that you can see just how far I have to go in my wedding day beauty regimen.

Why I Scheduled a January Wedding... : wedding beauty Blacke

After tangoing with nearly every skin care system in the world (including a few rounds of Accutane back in college), I’ve found the best upkeep system to be Proactiv. I’m conflicted about buying more though.

My Pros:

  • I know it works for me.
  • It makes my skin look healthy.
  • I love how smooth and soft my skin feels.

My Cons:

  • It’s expensive.
  • It’s time consuming.

Are my cons just the price I have to pay for decent skin?

Also, do you think I should wax the brow bushes about 1 week before the wedding? My math was based on that I want the red definitely to be gone and then still have some pluck free wiggle room for the honeymoon. The only problem is that I may not be in Norfolk the week before the wedding which would leave my brows up to chance as I seek a new person in the DC area during Christmas week. Hmmmmmm…

Are you planning your wedding around any physical sport seasons? Have you had to sport a shiner to a wedding or special event?

I feel your pain! I play rugby and am constantly dealing with bruises, scrapes, cuts, etc. Thank goodness wedding dresses are long, as my legs constantly look like a 12-year old’s :) I’ll probably have to take off the second half of my spring season, just to be sure I’m not sporting any black eyes (or on crutches!) for my May wedding.

I DID get lucky enough to have a pair of black eyes for the first meeting of my parents and my FI’s parents a couple of Thanksgivings ago. Luckily, I’d already met his parents, so I guess it COULD have been worse..

Oh, you’re adorable! You can barely see that shiner!

Definitely stay with the Proactiv. The cost and hassle are worth the results, and the impending agony and expense of trying to find something else that works, IMO.

Definitely wax one to two weeks before, and pluck strays. Redness and bumps should be rectified by then.

You’re so precious. Your eyes are gorg, btw. I’d say stay with the Proactiv if it works for you. You only have to be consistent with it until after wedding-land is over. :p

I’m not in sports anymore (insert crying here. stupid injuries), but my current problem is with my hands! I have hands that always covered in paint, partially dyed, have tar on them that won’t come off for days, etc. I have artist’s hands, as snotty as that sounds. That does not make for some very pretty hand-shots, and our engagement shoot is a week away! Meep. Maybe I’ll just embrace my rainbow-handed-ness and go for it. I also have ridonk scars on my knees and shins from the 13 years of basketball. I need to find a way to hide those guys. :-/

I waxed a week before our wedding (my first time!), and my redness was gone, but my brows looked great through the honeymoon. Luckily the lady stayed conservative - no surprised face!

I’m planning our wedding so that it doesn’t compete with college football. Not because we know anyone who plays… but because my dear FI is THAT obsessed with it. How can I expect him to be fully present for our ceremony if Penn State is playing?!? ;)

Oh my gosh. Do NOT do your eyebrows the week before….Wait at LEAST 2 weeks…..

I JUST had mine done, and had some skin ripped off!!! Completely healed now, 2 weeks later. That was 6 weeks before my wedding, and I will NOT get them done again before the day. ;) Too scared now!!! Lots of tweezin to do!

I agree with fiftyfootbride, your eyes ARE gorg! Even with a shiner!

Two weeks before and plucking the strays will totally be fine!

I had a bridesmaid with some brutal volleyball bruises on her legs!

you do have pretty eyes!

I wouldn’t get eyebrows waxed more than two days before the wedding

I LOVE proactive! that’s what I’ve been using since I’ve started getting acne & have used it ever since!

I actually kind of did pick the date around sports-We wanted Valentine’s Day-parents pretty much said no, so I wanted 6 months later but FI wasn’t sure b/c it was the playoff time period for softball-it should work out-cutting it close though.

I got mine waxed two days before the wedding, and they weren’t red at all by photo-op time. Maybe do a trial run and see how long it takes your skin to calm down after a wax?

You’re awesome, Lamb! We didn’t plan our wedding around anything other than the academic year (family full of teachers) and hurricane season. I was already in training mode for a marathon when we got engaged. So to avoid hideous racerback tan lines, I promptly gave up the cute singlets for sleeved full-coverage tech shirts. Sacrifices! ;o)

Ha! I love that this was a consideration for your timing. I’m running a half marathon the week before and I’m just hoping I don’t fall and scrape my knees.

I have bad skin and it’s such a pain! If it’s good, then maybe you should stick with what works!

UGH yes. isn’t it ridiculous how much time and money you have to spend to look nice? i’ve always been a wash and go kind of girl until my skin freaked out within the past 2 years - grad school? so i just have recently been dropping too much for skincare so i look like a normal person. argh. btw, you look fantastic anyways, shiner, pjs and all!

I was a BM for a college friend one summer, while I was playing IM softball. During a practice, I was talking with a teammate when (believe it or not) my now-husband– who was just a friend at the time–threw the ball to me. I wasn’t looking and instead of catching it, it hit me in the forearm. I had a humongous bruise, which you can see in all of my friend’s wedding photos. I figured at least I was a bridesmaid and not the bride. ;)
