Over the summer I got an unexpected wedding invite from an old college friend; being the lover of weddings that I am, I coerced Mr. Ramen to attend YET ANOTHER wedding of someone he didn’t know.
My friend’s then-fiancee, now wife, is Indian; probably 95% of the weddings I’ve been to have been Chinese/Asian weddings, and I’ve never had the privilege of going to an Indian wedding… I was seriously crossing my fingers hoping they would have an all-out Indian wedding, since every single one looks like an amazing party. Anyways, their wedding was crazy! Their entire wedding party was dressed in traditional Indian wedding clothing that the bride’s mother and family purchased in India. The bride entered to an Indian song instead of the traditional Canon in D/classical music, and the dinner banquet was Indian food! Seriously, Mr. Ramen and I were totally in food heaven.
The ceremony was outdoors - and it was a sweltering 90+*; thankfully they provided some super cute paper parasols to keep us cool! I was a sweat machine, regardless.
You can see the bridal party - the bridesmaids wore beautiful orange and reddish saris. What is everyone looking at? Only the cutest kids…
The flower girl was hilarious - she was VERY thorough in tossing the flower petals. And the ring bearer looked like he just woke up from a nap - he was very confused about where to go. Adorable!
The bride wore a beauuuuuuuuuutiful red and gold gown…
This is my favorite picture from the wedding! It was such a gorgeous place to get married - perfect early evening lighting, beautiful landscaping… it was perfect.
The Ramens with the newlyweds!
The cake decorations matched the wedding invites… it was some pretty good chocolate cake, too.
I loooooooooove Indian food. Once we saw that they were serving naan, we were happy.
Yummy yummy yummmmmmmmmy food! I think it was catered by a restaurant called India Palace? I’m not quite sure. But all of the food was delish!
A manzanita tree! Yeah, I’m a little obsessed.
Their favors were these pretty fabric scrolls printed with their names and wedding date.
The tables were all named for cities in India, which I thought was really cool and classy. The decorations were out of this world - I mean, hello, Chivari?!? And tall centerpieces for every table. SO BEAUTIFUL!
All of their guests were out on the dance floor - the DJ was playing mostly Indian/Bhangra music, and the floor was packed! I guess it’s a tradition to lift the bride and groom up in the air and dance around them - the groom asked us to keep his shoes hidden, because the bridesmaids try to steal them and he would have to buy them back for $50 a shoe per bridesmaid! He was so paranoid, haha! Prior to the dance floor being packed, the bride’s sister and friend performed a traditional dance, and there was even a surprise belly dancer there, too. Crazy!
It was so cool to get to experience a different culture’s way of celebrating marriage. I wish I went to more weddings where the dance floor was packed like that! (I hope ours is!)
How did you incorporate your cultural traditions into your wedding?
