And the Band Played On

October 15th, 2009 @ 12:41 pm by Miss French Fries

Today I’m meeting with a potential DJ for our wedding. This past winter, at a ubiquitous Bridal Expo in our area, Mr. FF and I strolled down aisle after aisle of potential wedding vendors. A lot of them were bakeries, which resulted in many slices of free cake. This was a good thing, and I happily ate piece after piece (Mr. FF, on the other hand, didn’t see the joy in free cake after the 4th piece was foisted upon us).

Another large bunch of vendors at the Expo were DJs. And, well… let’s just say they didn’t really do anything to take away from the “cheesy wedding DJ” image that has been ingrained in people’s memories. You know the type I’m talking about. They wear crazy outfits that most sane people wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole, and this may involve any combination of: suspenders, sequins, and velvet. They use cheesy catch phrases, and have a penchant for mispronouncing names of bridal party members. They make bad jokes, insist that you do a garter toss (against your will), and somehow manage to play all of the songs on your “Do Not Play” list. The type of DJ that conjures up this type of image:

So, it was with some trepidation that we dipped our toes into the pool of wedding DJs.

The first vendor we’re going to visit came highly recommended from a friend who attended a wedding that he had DJed. “I’ve never had so much fun in my life on a dance floor,” he said. So far, so good.

We knew that we didn’t have it in our budget to hire a band, plus I’ve always enjoyed hearing the real version of a song. It’s great when you can recognize the opening bars of one of your favorite songs, and rush out on the dance floor with your friends. So, we weren’t really disappointed that we couldn’t hire a band, but we knew that we wanted to hire a really good DJ. My sister didn’t have such a great experience at her wedding, and I know that we want somewhat specific things out of a DJ that we hire.

Things like what? Well, we’re very adamant that our DJ not stray from our do-not-play list, no matter how much money any of the groomsmen are attempting to bribe him with. The Chicken Dance, the YMCA, The Macarena, The Cotton Eyed Joe, or any type of line dancing are out. Over-played wedding songs such as We are Family, Celebration, the Grease Megamix, Old Time Rock ‘n Roll, Brick House, and Shook Me All Night Long are nixed. Specific artists that neither of us can stand (Prince, The B-52s) won’t be played, either. The list is actually much, much longer than that (47 entries on an Excel spreadsheet and counting), so suffice it to say we’re pretty picky about what we want played at our wedding.

On top of the Do Not Play list, we have some very specific ideas of music that we do want played. Mr. FF loves The Gufs, so we’ll have to make sure they have more than just “Smile” to play. I absolutely must hear one – okay, I’d be happy with all, but I’m not going to be greedy – of Justin Timberlake’s hits. We have to hear “Faithfully”, by Journey, because it’s the first song that we slow danced to (it will not be our first dance, though). And my parents have requested “Through the Years” by Kenny Rodgers, as the anniversary dance. They requested this at my sister’s wedding, and the DJ never played it — so it’s pretty important this time around that the DJ get it right. Also, we’re considering playing music other than the typical “dinner service” music (Rat Pack classics) and something a little more “us”. But that’s a different post, altogether.

So, as you can see, we have our work cut out for us. I guess if we had a checklist, #1 would be: plays what we want and not what we don’t, and #2 would be: isn’t ridiculously cheesy. Fingers crossed that this recommendation works out!

Have you ever been to a wedding where the DJ did a less than stellar job?

I’m getting married in December in Milwaukee and my DJ is “sound by design”. My wedding planner says they are very good about the must play and do not play list. You can enter your list online as well. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is the straight scoop. If you’re still looking for a DJ after Dec. 5th I’ll let you know how my experience with them goes.

At my best friend’s wedding the DJ got drunk and took his shirt off. Let’s just say I would casually mention that experience when interviewing DJs for our wedding. There is to be no drinking while on the job by golly!

Miss FF, I can totally relate to you on this one! I’m sure there are some great DJs out there for you that would be willing to fulfill your requests. We ended up going with an Ipod b/c we really wanted control over our playlists. It worked out for us, but I understand wanting to have a DJ in order to make things so smoothly. Good luck!

I’ve definitely experienced some not great DJ’s in my day… but it sounds like you know exactly what you want and I’m sure that as long as you are very exact in telling the DJ what you do and do NOT want, then everything should work out great!

I was just like you and basically had the same exact Do Not Play list. That DJ picture is classic by the way :)

We hired the DJ who played at a friends wedding a year ago because we LOVED him. last weekend, this same DJ, played at my brother’s wedding and really messed up some songs….so much so that if we didn’t already hire him, we wouldn’t have….not we’re stuck. And we also have a HUGE Do Not Play list….is it bad when your Do NOT Play list is long than your Do Play….ugh, we got to work on that!

Gotta love the bridal expo! We are also getting married in Milwaukee and we are using All Star Music. The owner, Craig, does all the weddings himself and he is definitely NOT cheesy. We met with him on Monday and he went line by line through our list of DO NOT PLAYs and Must-Haves. I highly recommend him.

We have hired a fabulous dj for our wedding, so I can’t wait to see what he comes up with! He normally works the club circuit in atlanta, and does a “select” (his words, not mine) number of weddings each year. He works only on a referral basis, so thank goodness for OLoL involvement!

Man, DJs are pretty awful. Even the good ones I’ve heard recently are… not stellar. I’m hoping we can find an amazing one, but we might have to settle for “less than bleu (cheese)”… good luck!

We were at two weddings in two weeks and the first one was terrible. The second was a-mazing. So amazing that my husband actually commented on how great the DJ was!

Haha, oh man, many of your DO NOT PLAY songs are on my Definitely-play-I-heart-Prince list! Hahaha. We’re going with iPod for ours.

I’m so worried about booking our DJ and getting a guy just like the one in that photo!

Haha, the last wedding I went to… I don’t know what the DJ was on, but he was singing along to the songs in his microphone!! It was awful, purely awful!

My friend’s wedding had the absolute worst DJ ever! I felt so bad for her. She, along with several bridesmaids and guests, tried to request songs and he kept saying “I’ll get to it, I’m warming the crowd up.” And he said it rather rudely, like how dare you question my song selection. Needless to say, he never played the requested songs and the dance floor was EMPTY the whole night.
However, another friend of mine had the best DJ I’ve ever heard so we are calling him up soon and I hope he’s as good as we remember! Good luck to you Miss FF!

If you’re finding that your DO Not play list is a mile long, your DJ may find it more useful for you to put together a lengthy list of songs that pass your inspection!

About 15 songs can be played per dancing hour. An average 6 hour reception has 3 dancing hours. For every hour less, you can deduct it straight from the dancing.

So, if you have a 6 hour reception, you’ll have about 40+ dance songs. If you put together a list of about 100+ hits that both you and your guests will love, your DJ will still have the opportunity to read the crowd and meet your tastes at the same time!

Good luck to you all! Every bride deserves to hear what they want on their wedding day, and as long as your expectations are in check (i.e. if you choose stuff people won’t dance to, they won’t dance)…you should have an amazing day!
