Flowers, Part 2

October 15th, 2009 @ 1:54 pm by Miss Moonbeam

After the bitter disappointment relayed in my first flower post, I had to come to terms with reality and started looking at what was actually available. So, the florist and I talked about what I could actually get, and it wasn’t too bad. There would still be a bunch of different kinds of mums and carnations that could be the (cheap) base of the bouquets. Sunflowers could still be in the mix, and there was a brushy looking filler called limonium (I think) that could add texture. We decided to add some alstromeira, because they’re cheap and are different from the mums and carnations. I’m also considering dried eucalyptus that I am assuming is also dyed, as it comes in a deep brown color.

Armed with that knowledge I headed to Trader Joe’s (still wish we had those in Texas) and got some flowers to see what these bouquets would look like. I was able to find sunflowers, what I think is limonium, alstromeira and mums. Of course, TJ’s had celosia thrown in their bouquets, but I had to make these without that, because I haven’t sourced it yet (though I’m still trying).

Here’s what I ended up with for a grand total of $17. See why I wish there was a TJ’s in Texas?

I started off with the bouts and corsages. I followed this tutorial. The only things I did differently were to wrap the wire around the flowers instead of through the stems, and when I wrapped the ribbon around the stems, I used smaller pins at the bottom to secure the ribbon ends (you can sort of see the small blue and purple pinheads at the bottoms of the two on the left).

I’m thinking the two on the left are good for the guys and the third from the left is my favorite for the ladies. I’ve got them in the fridge now to see how well they hold up. So far, so good.

And here are the bouquets I made. I really like the limonium and the unwrapped ends. They look like they were just gathered from the field and are still warm from the sun.

I think this would be good for a flower girl or to be used as a table arrangement. Our vases don’t have super wide openings, so they can’t hold a ton of flowers.

This one might be good for the bridesmaids, but I feel like they should get sunflowers too. I had just run out.

Here’s what I imagine my bridal bouquet will look like, except I think I’d go slightly larger and add more of the limonium (brushy stuff).

And this is my craft fail. I was attempting pomanders for the flower girls, but they take a lot of flowers, and I ran out of yellow after this was half done. They also don’t seem as sturdy as some of the other things I had made. You’ve got to handle the flowers fairly roughly to get them in place.

Now, my next dilemma is: should we pay for someone to make corsages, bouts and bouquets, or should we just order a bunch of flowers, save a couple hundred bucks, and have a lot of flowers to take care of the day before the wedding?

We’ve got about 10-12 bouts, 5-6 corsages, my bouquet, 4 bridesmaids’ bouquets, 4 flower girl bouquets or wrist corsages and 20 table arrangements to make. I’ll definitely have some helpers for these projects, but how hectic has it been for you other DIY florists out there?

Very cheerful colors.

I agree, I wish there was TJ in Texas too. But I thought they were supposed to open one in Dallas . . .

Your bouts are gorgeous! They look professional, and I love how they’re all different. I like your bouquets a lot, too, especially the bridal one with the sunflowers–it’s so unique! I think you definitely have the skillz to do it yourself. The only question is, would it stress you out having this project to tackle right before the wedding?

I love the idea of DIY flowers, but I think I would try to find someone (maybe from Craigslist!) to labor over them. You have a lot of them to assemble and there’s no point being stressed out!

Good for you for being so “hands on” . I agree w/ Mrs. Mouse about a lot for last minute but your bouquet is beautiful and you did a very nice job.

I love the flowers that you tried — and the bouquets & bouts look great! I think you obviously have the skill to DIY, but is it going to stress you out to assemble before your wedding? If so, I agree with the previous posters — maybe consider hiring someone to assemble them.

Oh thy’re cute!! It would be a lot of work to DIY days before…. but perhaps if you had a helpful team?

or consider non-real-flowers bouts and corsages? that way you’d only have to deal with bouquets.

Your trial bouquets turned out lovely!

I’m doing my own flowers. My mom used to own a flower business (she created dried flower wreaths), so she’s growing all of the flowers for my wedding! <3 I’m actually cutting them/arranging three days before the wedding, and only sticking in last-minute the delicate flowers with a greater propensity to wilt. I say go for it! And I’ll be eagerly awaiting to see how it goes so I can better gauge how to do it myself!

I think that you can def do the bouts, corsages, and bouquets but taking on 20 centerpieces as well is alot! Why not see if you can have a florist do your centerpieces and you do the rest? That’s also helpful because you have someone who would be able to order the flowers for you and maybe provide you with space to arrange them! Can’t wait to see the final product!

They look amazing! And it would totally not be hard if you had about 5-6 people working on them assembly line style! You could knock them out in no time!

They look great. We DIYed our flowers and it was a great choice for us. We saved a ton of money and it was actually kind of fun assembling everything together. It took us (my sis, BM and me) a couple of hours the morning of the wedding to get them all taken care of.

I agree with mkat–maybe a combo of DIY and hiring a florist would work for you. Those bouts and bouquets look so nice, and with the exposed stems on the bouquets, you could easily arrange them the night before and keep them in water till the ceremony.
Hire a florist for centerpieces and DIY the personal flowers!

I love the colors of your flowers! I ended up DIY’ing mine with artificial flowers because I did them weeks before!

I DIYed flowers but ran out of time for bouts and corsages. I had a backup plan where I talked to a florist ahead of time (my aunt frequented her shop) and I purchased all the flowers and supplies and just paid her minimal labor costs to make them all for us.
It was so worth it to have them done cheaply and not have the stress of them on the day before!

Those flowers look great…I think if they didn’t take you too long and weren’t way stressful you should just do it yourself! It’ll save you money, and they look awesome.

i think you did a fabulous job! how long did it take you to do these? you do have a lot of flowers to put together…maybe find someone to take on some of the work and then you can handle the rest?

I love TJ’s and haven’t been to one in years. I should be treated for some serious withdrawal symptoms. ;)

The flowers are great.

In other news, your walls amaze me. Those were the accent colors at my wedding, so I love them.
