Relationship Series: Unexpected Trait

Is there a trait your SO possesses you never pictured your him/her having?

Mrs. Yorkie - I never thought I’d marry someone so creative. Mr. Yorkie really surprised me (in a refreshingly good way) with how crafty and handy he is. Over the years, he’s gifted me with a number of handmade treasures, including the intricately constructed card that he used to propose with. I love that we were able to join forces on so many of our DIY wedding projects. It’s definitely not something that I would have expected from my sweet scientist! :)

Miss Ramen - I NEVER thought I’d be marrying a guy who was SO into aesthetics. And of course, Mr. Ramen is an industrial designer! But it’s all good - even though he’s not the greatest for fashion advice, when it comes to DIYing our wedding, he’s the best partner-in-crime to have!

Miss Frozen Yogurt - I never thought I would marry a guy that is so into working out, and Mr. Fro Yo goes to the gym every day for a couple hours and then comes home to drink protein shakes and down egg whites and tuna. But whenever I have questions about how to tone some part of my body, he always has the answer. Now if only I had the same motivation as he does…

Miss Lamb - I thought I would end up with someone like my dad who avoids conflict and is more apt to give the silent treatment. J-ram and I definitely fight the same way as I do - loudly! We’re both very passionate about our viewpoints, so when we’re not on the same page, the gauntlet gets thrown!

Mrs. Mary Jane - I never thought I would marry a guy who knows more about computers, networking, electronics and gadgets than I do, but Mr. Mary Jane most definitely does. It’s not that I know a ton about that stuff, but I have always been the techie/fix-my-computer-please person in relationships (and in my family). I’ve noticed that now when my mom has a question about her laptop, she emails Mr. Mary Jane instead of me! It’s nice that I can now pass the “why is my email doing this?” tech-support torch to him.

Mrs. Joey - I never thought I’d marry someone who would be OK with me traveling so much and also be OK with staying home. Lots of guys I knew weren’t into their girlfriends/wives traveling abroad alone for long periods of time. They didn’t want to have kids with someone who could be gone a lot. Mr. Joey is totally fine with me traveling. I think it’s because his dad traveled a lot when he was young, so it isn’t a huge deal. I guess I got lucky.

Mrs. Duckling - Similar to Mary Jane, I never thought I’d marry someone who was so technically savvy. Mr. Ducky has literally built a computer from scratch and then codes websites, does graphic design and can fix all the issues I cause on my own computer. But beyond that he is multi-talented and also builds furniture, cooks and is very handy. I feel pretty lucky since I definitely am not the most handy or technical person around.

Mrs. French Bulldog - I never thought I’d marry someone who was as interested in cooking as Mr Frenchie. I learned at a young age how to cook, watching my mom. Then, I did most of the dinner cooking for my family in high school and when I came back from college. I always assumed I’d be the chef in my marriage. Mr Frenchie has some pretty fancy cooking skills and we love to cook complicated recipes together. It is a really fun and unexpected trait. :)

Mrs. Peony - I always thought I’d marry a “manly man” like my father - stoic, hard-working, and not into his appearance at all. Mr. Peony is the biggest metrosexual I know. He loves to shop, and owns more shoes and jewelry than I do! He knows designer names, is up-to-date on all the latest fashions (including women’s), and takes a looong time to get ready when we’re going out. He’s the only guy I know who encourages his wife to go get mani/pedis, facials, and massages, probably so that he can come along and join in on the treatments. I guess it all worked out for the best because I’m not into that stuff at all, so we balance each other out well!

Mrs. Peep Toe - I never thought I’d marry a self-professed geek (and I mean that in the best way possible). He loves his Mac computers and Converse tennis shoes (which are currently in fashion, but weren’t really when we met). And he loves Barney’s, the ridiculously expensive department store. I always thought I’d marry someone handy around the house, but in reality, I do most of the handy work and he is most definitely the better cook.

Mrs. Penguin - This is so superficial, but Mr. Peng has freckles! Not that I never thought about marrying someone with/without freckles, but he’s a genuine freckled out person. I remember the first time he took off his shirt in front of me and I thought, “WOW! That’s a lot of freckles!” He’s also totally hairy. I’m Asian, I’m just used to my hairlessness I guess.

Personality wise, I thought I’d marry someone way dorkier/goofier than Mr. Pengy. He’s a very steady person, and he likes to joke around but he’s not GOOFY. I am way sillier than he is. I’m just like my parents, and when he gets around the 3 of us (me, my mom, and my dad) he is overwhelmed by the outright dorkiness of it all, it’s hard to handle for him, I’m sure. :) Sometimes I feel bad, but mostly I don’t because I’m a good cook, and if he wants some good food for dinner he better put up with the bad jokes and loud singing. (BTW, I sing every song that comes on the radio but I replace every appropriate word with my dog’s name or a reference to dogs or puppies. So “All the single ladies, all the single ladies” becomes “All the smelly puppies, all the smelly Billies”, and so on. Every. Single. Song. Ever.)

Miss Cloud - I NEVER thought I would marry (or really even be friends with) someone who is so SHY! Mr. Cloud warms up as he gets to know people but he is very shy and mellow when he first meets people. I’m loud and chatty, and never hit it off with people who I have to drag conversations out of. I guess I’m lucky he never was a shy guy with me. :)

Mrs. Cheese - He dances, willingly and silly-ly, at every opportunity, with this smile on his face that reminds me of the joy you usually only see in young children. That grin - the mischievous silly six-year old grin - that grin is why I fell in love with him. Who doesn’t love a silly man?

I never thought I’d marry a silly man. I thought I was looking for stability, someone to be “my rock” so to speak. And while he is well able to hold me up when I need someone to lean on, it’s his willingness to forget the seriousness of life and dance that supports me.

Miss Rainbow - Mr. R is SO silly. I mean, insanely ridiculous. I love him so much more for it, but it was certainly unexpected. I’ve known him (long distance) for so long, but always thought he was this calm, serious, intellectual type. I never thought someone so incredibly smart would be such a nut, but he is! I remember one of the first weekends that he came to see me, he did something so ridiculous, and I couldn’t help but die laughing. I thought to myself, ‘what just happened?!’ I SO didn’t expect that from him, but it was a good thing, not many people surprise me.

Miss Dachshund - I never thought I’d marry someone so TALL! I mean, I’ve never even known anyone as tall as Mr. Dachshund (until I met his family. Holy cow our kids are going to be giants). I always considered myself to be slightly above average height, and he towers above me, making me feel so short! Also, Mr. Doxie is hearing impaired and likely to be deaf in a few years. That was unexpected.

Personality wise, I think Mr. Dachshund is everything I hoped for in a partner. He’s a musician, he’s funny, silly, intelligent, nerdy… there really aren’t any surprises there! He’s much, much kinder than the other boys I’ve ever dated. I think that was a little bit of an adjustment at first.

Miss French Fries - This isn’t a personality trait, but I never EVER thought I would marry someone shorter than me! All throughout high school and college, I swore to my girlfriends, my family, and anyone who would listen that I wouldn’t even date someone shorter than me. If they weren’t over 5′11″, I wouldn’t consider it. But, lo and behold, here I am!

Truthfully, I think I finally got over it when my sister (and MOH) said to me: Listen. You’ve dated tons of guys that are taller than you and they’ve treated you like crap. Why disregard this guy, who’s really nice, just because he’s short? Done and done.

Mrs. Eggplant - I never thought I’d marry someone so young! Seriously, younger than my sibling is pretty young. But Mr. Eggplant acts older than me in all things that involve responsibility.

I also never thought I’d marry someone who wasn’t into his appearance. Mr. Eggplant isn’t a slob by any means, but I was used to dating guys who were very conscious of their clothing, fitness, and appearance. I mean, guys that used to tan at the tanning salon with me and outspend me on clothes! Mr. Eggplant is a simple guy and to him, fashion is all marketing, and he’s a marketer so he doesn’t buy into the culture (at least not for full price). At the risk of sounding superficial, I will confess that I never shopped at the Gap, Express, or Target before meeting Mr. Eggplant. He introduced me to cheap and chic and I’ve never looked back since. :)

Mrs. Mouse - I never thought I’d marry someone who was so into sports. I dated a couple of duds when I was younger, so I falsely associated loving sports with being a jerk. I know, it makes no sense at all! The Dude is nothing like the stereotypical football fan: instead of a beer belly he has pages and pages full of detailed notes on every player written in a tiny font. He spends time playing NCAA Football on his Playstation, writing his football blog, hanging out on football message boards, and creating “what if” tournaments in Microsoft Excel! Phew, I get exhausted just thinking about it! I’m so happy that he has a hobby that he loves so much, and that he is willing to share it with me whenever I ask.

Mrs. Potato Chips - I never thought I’d marry a ginger!

I also never thought my future spouse would be heavily into politics, to the point of wanting to someday run for office (of the United States, mind you). Lastly, I always envisioned myself with someone nerdy/artsy, so the fact that Potato Head is in the sports/health field is a surprise. We learn a lot from one another, I think.

Mrs. Ballet Flat - I never thought I’d marry someone who was really into computers. He’s so smart when it comes to gadgets and computers. Everyone in our families just go to him for computer problems. I have my own personal Geek Squad at home! :)

I never thought I would marry someone as caring and kind as my fiance. He’s so thoughtful and caring. He really is a saint.

For instance, his father developed a medical condition where he was unable to work any more. He has supported his family, and their home in a really nice area of Alpharetta, since he was a freshman in college. Working two jobs in two different research labs. Plus paid for his education, been a double major, kept Hope scholarships, and has no debt. And puts up with me!

I really thought people like this did not exist anymore.

<3 Weddingbee for this series. I love reading them all.

I never thought I would marry someone so very into video games. Before we started dating, I was a self-proclaimed hater of video games, and he’s been gradually converting me. Honestly, I would rather him be into games than sports, so all’s well.

Mrs. Penguin, I totally do that too……Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin turned into “Just a small town dog, living in a lonely kennel……”

I never thought I would marry someone as un-dramatic as Mr. Smith. I am an emotional ping-pong, just all over the place, and he is calm, cool and collected (and a total goofball.)

@ melodic I too never thought I would marry someone so into computer gaming. He’s not converting me yet though, I prefer actual sports.

Peng!! My husband and I do that to with songs, but replace it with our cat’s name or kittens! I thought we were the only ones!

Peng, my FI and I do it too! Our favorite that we sing daily is “her name was Ginger (our dogs name) she was a showgirl at the copacabana”

We also do raps where we spell out her name. Her nickname is G-Unit so you can imagine the possibilites of songs :)

Needless to say I never thought I would marry someone as goofy as me, I’m pretty out there & the FI is right there with me :)

Pengy, we both are right there with you!!! His most surprising trait? How absolutely, adorably sweet he can be. He’s not very good with words, and can’t write them to save his life, but when he does tell me how he feels I just melt! And we have about a million variations of names for our pets, and we also replace words in songs to go with them. I sing whatever song I heard last to my dog every day when I get home :) And he does the same to me

I never ever thought I’d marry someone that is so standoffish and quiet in first impressions. Honestly, when I’ve met people who are “hard to read” in the past, I’ve always thought “What’s the point? That person is making NO EFFORT to get to know me. Pffft.” Somehow, when I met the hubs, I felt that way a TINY bit, but I was also intensely curious about him. It made him a little mysterious and a bit of a challenge! I DID always expect I’d find a mate who challenges me, so, I suppose he’s unexpected and expected all at the same time:-)

I never though I would marry someone who was so into philosophy. Seriously. Always expected to marry a math and numbers business guy, and here I am getting ready to marry someone aiming to get their phd in philosophy and ethics so he can be a professor. I love him, though, for his tendency to launch into random lectures about ontology… even though I have NO idea what he’s talking about.

Mrs. Penguin–I had to laugh out loud about your song references to dogs…It wasn’t two days ago that my hubby was singing “all the single puppies, all the single puppies, put your tails up…”

i figured i would marry someone who was just as into sports as i was, but my guy tolerates sports but isn’t into it. he’s pretty much a baseball widower come spring. lol. he’s more of the techy type. it’s fantastic having tech support like that!
