A Little Shopping for the Groom

October 16th, 2009 @ 11:28 am by Miss Frozen Yogurt

Woo hoo! We finally tried to outfit Mr. Fro Yo! I’ve had my dress choice squared away since June, so it was only fair that my Mr. finally figure out what he’s going to wear. But alas, I’m getting ahead of myself. We went to 2 different stores recently so that we could peruse the racks and racks of grey suits, and we came across some great contenders.

The first place we went was Joseph A. Bank. We were lured in by their advertising of buying one suit and getting a second for $99, and maybe a third for free? I’m not sure; they were running so many specials in there, but at least they had some good suits. The sales guy was kind of a lurker, which wasn’t all that helpful since he was just watching me pull out suits, even though I told him that we were interested in grey suits in size 44. Hmm… anyway, so while we were there, Mr. Fro Yo tried on 2 suits.

The first suit was a plain grey suit, but unfortunately I didn’t pull out my camera until he had his 2nd suit on.

The second had a thin pinstripe (sorry he’s not looking at the camera. He won’t be looking at the camera in any of them, and it’s not that I’m a bad photographer, he’s just being shy):

Both of them looked good, but they carried a hefty price tag (the ones he liked at JoS. A. Bank ranged between $400-$800). So as we were leaving, I saw Express for Men and thought, ‘why not pop in there and see what their suits are like?’ I knew that they would be cheaper.

When we walked in, the employees were seriously SO helpful. We had a great shopping experience there. We saw 2 grey ones, so we pulled them and he tried them on.

The first was a grey pin stripe that was super cute and 30% off:

The second one Mr. Fro Yo did not want to try on. In fact, his exact words were, “this is an f’ing leisure suit.”

But I really liked it, so he humored me and put it on:

See that face? That is not a happy face, but I thought it looked great. Unfortunately, he disagreed.

So, the search continues. We feel like it was a good start, but want to shop around to see what else we can find.

Did you try out several places before deciding on a tux or suit for your groom?

We went to try on Zegna suits and tuxes at Neimans. They fit him beautifully, but we weren’t really looking to spend $5,000 on a suit or tux. It was hard walking away.

I think next time we’re going to go to the Armani side. Their tuxes run around $1,000-2,000. Still a lot, but we’ll see.

those grey suits are cute =)

we just made one stop: men’s wearhouse…FI had worn a suit from them in a previous wedding before and it was convenient for out of town wedding party members.

FI likes the Macy’s Men’s store for suit shopping. I actually was on the website and saw that they are having a Menswear sale - additional 20% off suits and tuxes if anyone is interested.

I like the slimmer fit of the Express pants. Good luck!

I really like the 2nd suit (the one that Mr. Fro Yo called a leisure suit)! We’re going the suit route, too, for the guys…not sure if we’re renting or buying, but if we buy Mr. FF would definitely get use out of it, since he wears suits every day. @slicey19: Thanks for the tip!

I think my fiance is going to go with a Banana Republic suit. They have a new fit (I think it’s called Tailored?) that is a little slimmer but without the funky look of most modern/slim fits. I think their suits are generally around $400, but there are always Banana coupons floating around!

My DH was lucky. I work for a company called Tom James and what I am is a custom clothier. We make tuxes and suits prices start at $499 (custom). I made the tux my DH wore at our wedding.

IMO do not buy a suit based on price. A lot of the driving factors of price is the type of fabric and the “innards” and construction.

Feel free to PM me if you need to know more about men’s suits (I’m a wealth of knowledge!)

GL in the hunt of finding a great suit for your FI.

We got a gray suit for my fiance! We were originally looking for the ever-popular tan suit and were having no luck at the typical suit stores here. We popped into H&M when we were in downtown Toronto to meet with the caterer and he fell in love with a gray suit. Plus it was a good price! I think it helps that he is quite skinny and their suits are a really slim fit.

@Brianalaura: I wish on a daily basis that we had an H&M, but we don’t!! No where in Texas. It’s a sad reality for me. :(

We ended up going the Macy’s route as well…but he suffered through Men’s Warehouse, Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers, and a few others before he found one at Macy’s that we both liked (and for 30% off!!)

I agree with you and like the last suit! But is your man really a 44? Looking at the pics those suits all look cut a little generously!

We’re still looking. Mr. P originally wanted a gray suit with white pinstripes, too! That *might* change.

Hmm. We were in Jos. A Banks today. They’re having a suit sale: $199 for their Executive Suits (regularly $550), plus a second item at 60% off. We’re considering a tuxedo & suit for him or a suit from him and one for BM. Ironically, BM has a tuxedo but no suit (well, that fits).

Boy LOVES Brooks Brothers with a strange and awkward passion, so we’re hoping to get one of their suits for him on sale (he’d never buy it otherwise).
