Relationship Series: Strange Things in Common

What strange things do you and your FI/husband have in common?

Mrs. Mary Jane - What a fun question! Mr. Mary Jane and I are a little quirky in a lot of ways. For example, we both love that ‘nasty’ fake butter they put on popcorn at the movies, to the point that we’ll go in to the theater and order the popcorn with “lots of super extra tons of butter”, and then bring it home and eat it as our supper. We both hate eggs almost as much as we hate mustard, and have a shared favorite Chinese restaurant — a hole-in-the-wall in the middle of nowhere, better than anywhere we’ve been in the country. Funny how all of the quirks I’m listing involve food. We like food, I guess!! We also grew up near the same very small town, yet somehow didn’t know each other (though one of my best friends was his childhood neighbor!) and met in a much larger city and purely coincidental situation. Because of our practically identical primary educations, we have grammatical quirks that are a result of the region. We’ll both say things like, “Are you taking that book with?”

Mrs. Peony - What a great question! Here’s our list:

  • My birthday is 12/7 and his is 1/27
  • We’re both the eldest of two children that are 2 years apart
  • We attended and met at the same university… and our younger siblings both went to college in Boston!
  • We both have fake front teeth due to childhood accidents
  • We were both music/orchestra geeks
  • We both have an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars

Mrs. Yorkie - I’ve always thought that it was strange that Mr. Y and I were both already seasoned genealogists before we got together. I mean, there probably aren’t too many people under the age of, say, SIXTY who get visibly excited when they uncover a new surname to add to their family tree. It’s funny, but a good chunk of the conversation during our first date included the divulging of our secrets to navigating Ancestry.com and learning of our shared heartbreak over the loss of the 1890 census records that perished in a fire almost 90 years ago.

I’m glad that I have Mr. Y as my family history partner-in-crime. On our honeymoon in Scotland, he boosted me over the wall of a centuries-old churchyard so that I could see if my great-great-great-grandfather was buried there. Romantic, eh? ;)

Mrs. Joey - Both Mr. Joey and I have Russia ties. He lived there when he was 5 when his Dad had a teaching fellowship at Moscow State University. I lived there when I was 18 and 20. We have different feelings about our time there, though. I loved it and would go back in a heartbeat. He just remembers babushkas yelling at his Mom on the subway and eating a lot of cabbage during the winter.

We both also went to the University of Washington (Go Huskies!) at the same time but didn’t know each other. We’re also pretty sure we took 2 of the same classes. I also think Mrs. Peep was there when I was there, too. :)

Mrs. Peep Toe - I’ve had to think about this one, but other than the fact that we both think Swedish Fish are the best candy ever (but really, who doesn’t?), we both went to Japan in high school as exchange students and we both traveled/lived abroad in 2000, but he was in Australia and I was in Europe. And we’ve both at one point in our lives fit everything we own in a car. Even quirkier, both our parents came to San Francisco on their honeymoons (where we met and married) and they both bought this weird toothpick holder at a shop in Sausalito. Ironic? Quirky? Who knows.

Ms. Sushi - Mr. Sushi and I are both military brats; his dad was in the Navy and is now in the Air National Guard, and my dad was in the Air Force. Mr. Sushi’s dad and I are in the same Air National Guard unit. Both of our moms are Filipino and moved to the US from the Philippines (due to marrying military men!). Both of our dads are of German/PA Dutch descent. And I swear we are NOT related. :)

Mrs. Bee - We discovered on our second date that we’re both huge Law & Order fans. We’ve seen practically every episode since it first started airing in 1990 — including on every spin-off! I’ve yet to meet someone who knows more about L&O than us!

Mrs. Perfume - Mr. P and I collect art. One of the things that we found odd and attractive about each other was that we each had our own collections of fine art (and neither of us is an artist or in the art business). Both our collections are contemporary, his more figurative, mine more abstract. Before him, I had not met anyone my age (or close to my age) that was single, straight and serious into collecting.

Miss Frozen Yogurt - I had to really think about this one and even went home to ask Mr. Fro Yo. He didn’t come up with anything too strange (we both try to eat healthy–wow, how weird), so I had to keep thinking. And then it hit me: he and my dad share the same birthday and they were also valedictorians of their high school. Okay, so maybe he and my dad share more things in common but I took it as a good sign, since I was so close with my dad.

Mrs. Deviled Egg - Probably the strangest thing we have in common is that we both hate having a TV in the bedroom, so that’s something we won’t ever plan to have at our house. What can I say? We both value sleep.

Mrs. Eggplant - Strangely, we both went to the same pediatrician, even though we both lived half an hour from her. Also, both of our grandparents were from the same village in China and speak the same dialect of Chinese. I hope we’re not related somewhere down the line!

Mrs. Sprinkle - I don’t think the things we have in common (of which there are many) are all that strange… unless you count a passion for huge burritos, Morrissey, cats and “Freaks and Geeks” as strange things. :)

Mrs. Labrador - The first time Mr. Lab and I ever spoke to each other (past casual workplace talk), we found out that we had both lost our fathers in high school, both had yellow Labradors as kids, and we grew up only about an hour and a half away from each other (meeting people from south Georgia is very rare at UGA where most of the students are from Atlanta). We also both have very crude humor, which is great because if you were a fly on the wall in our house, you’d think we’d need to be admitted to an insane asylum. But that’s part of the reason why we’re perfect for each other!

Mrs. Mouse - My mom and his dad have the same birthday, which is really just a coincidence—not that weird.

I think what’s weirder is that we disagree on so many things, yet we’re still so compatible! For instance, he despises cheese of all kinds, while I live for a giant bowl of melty queso. He could spend all day watching college football, but I’d rather marathon Gossip Girl or Veronica Mars or Buffy. I love all things fashion, and his idea of dressing up is wearing pants that aren’t jeans. Luckily we share a love of vulgar humor (think It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Trailer Park Boys), cats, and never acting like grownups.

Mrs. Potato Chips - I am with Fro-Yo! Mr. Potato Head and I have a lot in common, but nothing too coincidental or quirky. Strangely, it’s our dads who have a lot of weird stuff in common. They both served in the Navy, have held the same (pretty unique) jobs, are into the same things (specific types of old cars, etc.). I think it was meant to be!

Mrs. Taffy - After a few minutes of meeting Mr. Taffy, we realized that we had both studied design in New York, were both extremely allergic to cats, had both lived in Ann Arbor, and were both designers in the automotive industry. (HUGE rival companies, at that!)

Even crazier, when he was a student at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, he lived at the same intersection as a guy that I dated in New York while I was a student in Manhattan! That was kind of weird.

Mrs. Gloss - I’m sure there are many strange things that we have in common, but we’ve been together so long that they are no longer ’strange’ to us and I can’t think of any except that we don’t use a flat top sheet.

Mrs. Duckling - I guess we don’t share anything too strange, other than the fact that others would just think we are strange if someone observed us alone. We find each other highly amusing and laugh at thing no one else would find funny.

Mrs. Ballet Flat - I’m not sure if this is super strange, but we’re both football nuts. We could easily waste our Saturdays and Sundays watching football all day!

Miss Parfait - Here are our strange things in common:

  • Our last names are three letters long and extremely unique. I’m a little sad to give mine up, but the fact that his is just as cool makes me feel better. ;)
  • We both look young and get mistaken for being teenagers.
  • My brother and dad would laugh and shake their heads at this, but Mr. Parfait told me to write it: I love being treated like a princess, and he loves treating me like a princess!
  • We both love eating dried spaghetti. YUM!

Do you and your SO share anything strange in common?

I should also add, our middle names not only start with the same letter, but they’re also the male and female variation of the same name!

We were both delivered by the same doctor, but not much else. We’re two very different people!

We have both always wanted to have a pet chicken. More to the point, we have both mentioned to our friends, long before meeting each other, that we wanted a pet chicken. I’m not sure whether the desire for the pet chicken or the fact that we admitted it was more strange.

Lets see…
We grew up in neighboring towns, we both graduated from college in 3 years (nerds!), we have pretty much the same masters degree, & we both work for city governments. He started out as a planning intern and moved to another dept. & I work as a planner. We both have horrible eyesight, although mine has been mostly corrected with Lasik. We were introduced by a mutual friend who gave both of us the same line–I have someone you need to meet, they’re Catholic, Czech, and want to work for city govt., you have so much in common.

Strange commonalities or coincidences:
- Both visited Maui EVERY summer (me to visit my grandparents, he to the same resort - where my UNCLE works & knew his family for, like, forever) since we were VERY young, but never met
- His roommate Jr. year was one of my best friends, whom I visited often…never met
- His father’s birthday is the day before my mother’s birthday
- Both are addicted to ESPN - if it was the only channel we got (besides NBC during ND football season) we’d be ecstatic
- His favorite quarterback is Joe Montana (arguably the greatest in history) & my birthday (3/16) are the numbers Montana wore as an ND quarterback & a 49er
- we “GET” each other…honestly, while friends & family come close, no one else REALLY “gets” either of us…guess that’s why we’re MFEO!

my husband and i both HATE the movie ET. we both had traumatic childhood experiences of watching that movie and being terrified… our future children will probably be blissfully ignorant of that movie until they move out!

@staceyb: ET is the scariest freakin’ thing ever! My dad traumatized me when I was little b/c he bought an ET mask and thought it would be funny to spring at me with it on. I can’t watch that movie now. *shudders*

Aaaanyhow, here are some of the stranger similarities.
-We rip the ads out of magazines to “clean” them. Needless to say, we have obsessive-compulsive personalities.
-We don’t like phone conversations (unless it’s with each other) and try to avoid them.
-We have interesting stories about our initials.
-He attended the same high school as my mother and her siblings, and visited the same places I did as a child.
-Like Mrs. Deviled Egg, we refuse to have a TV in the bedroom…in fact, we don’t really watch TV at all, but we love movies and going to see them.
-We’re not into The Beatles and avoided watching Across the Universe for months.
-We both like cats, but we’re not really animal people, and get annoyed whenever animals are treated like furbabies.
-Our last names have the same letters rearranged, except my last name is two letters longer.
-We’re very musical, play a variety of instruments, sing, and write music.

We have a LOT in common, haha. One time MinMan lifted up his shirt and started poking his ribs, saying “There’s got to be one missing in here!”

Awww, man - we’re very similar … but I’m not so sure how many similarities are strange! I know we’ve had this conversation on several occasions, though!
We both grew up going to the same car show.
We each have 4-letter middle names
We’re both first born children w/ a brother who’s 17 (though he has two other brothers as well).
We both have terrible habits of correcting other’s speech.
We have a terrible love affair with baby talk. Seriously. I don’t think it’s natural.

Ugh - I feel like I’m reaching here and like I said - we’ve totally looked at eachother and gone “no way!” when finding out something similar …

We both hate capers
We’re the same height
We both have really strange toe-dexterity
We’re both cat people
We both hate yelling and raised voices
We’re both crazy introverts
We both had the exact same computer when we started out (Now I have a sexy Macbook Pro).

I know there’s more, but I keep forgetting stuff!

We’re both HUGE list makers–we make an organized list for grocery shopping every week and always stick to it. We’re kind of organizational nerds like that! Oh, and we both overreact and freak out at all Michigan sporting events.

Our Godmothers used to be roommates in college. We found that out only after 2 years of dating… my aunt and his mom used to be co-workers at UCLA med.. didn’t find that out until 3 years of dating.

When our parents met and were talking about us as babies (how embarrassing) it turned out that our favourite food was salami and olives. As babies! I’ve never met anyone who liked those foods when they were one year old. I’m a vegetarian now but we can still put away a good bowl of marinated kalamata :)

my fiance was born in the same hospital as me, exactly 8 months earlier.

it’s always struck me as odd - we didn’t meet through living in the same area, as my parents moved away when i was 3.
