Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

In this post, I wrote that I had to dig through couch cushions to find enough spare change to afford that lovely J.Crew dress. Did you think I was kidding? I wasn’t. Who knew that this:

1

would = this?

DSCI1485

Potato Head and I have been throwing our spare change in a jar for probably a year now. I felt more than a little guilty for using our rainy-day change to splurge on this dress, but he insisted, and that is why he is awesome. The photo I posted above is clearly terrible, but the dress is wonderful: raw silk and pockets and a delicate fluttery neckline. I can already name three events I’ll wear this to (our engagement photos plus two upcoming weddings), and it is easy to dress up (with heels and jewelry) or dress down (a jean jacket, chunky bracelet, and cowboy boots). Did I justify the expense enough? Please note the change jar left me with enough money to also treat Potato Head to a Starbucks coffee.

Do you and your partner throw change in a jar? If you don’t, you should start immediately! Are you going to use it to splurge on something wedding-related? I highly recommend doing so!

Mr. R and I used to do this, but we never really use cash anymore, so we never have spare change! Guess i’ll have to resort to other measures to get my dress! ;)

So awesome! We have a change jar, too. When we empty it, we usually save the cash to put towards something we want to buy but can’t justify.

We have a cash “ashtray” in the car- we don’t smoke so it seems to wind up with more change than ashes. We normally put all the coins in the coinstar (cause really who can count that) and end up treating ourselves to a fancy dinner :o)

But a dress seems like a good idea ;o) and one I shall remember!

We have a change jar - and we’ve emptied it twice so far - once to adopt our puppy from the animal shelter, and once for spending money for a cruise this past summer (the cruise he proposed during!) Now we’re committed to saving up the change until our honeymoon for lots of extra spending money!

@Miss Rainbow: That’s our problem too… we have a change jar but it’s got about 52 cents in pennies in it. We use plastic almost all the time…

When we got engaged two years ago, we bought a green plastic piggy bank, which we termed the wedding pig. Any change lying around the house or cash found in pockets before a load of laundry has gone into the pig. A few nice house guests have contributed to the pig as well. Our wedding is in 3 weeks, and it will soon transition to the honeymoon pig so that we have some hope of having more than a staycation as our honeymoon!

We have a cup full of pennies! We always end up needing the quarters and dimes. lol. We’re definitely trying, though! I don’t know what we’re going to spend it on, but it may end up being a desk.

Don’t you love those rainy day savings! We have a change jug too and one night after a few too many drinks we started throwing some bills hahaha. Either way the money comes back to us so no harm no foul right? ;) Our change jar will either be our tip money for the wedding or the honeymoon fund..hopefully a little of both!

We have a piggy bank. She has a name and everything. LOL. We are like 5 year olds. She is almost full so I think it is time for us to empty her out and go to an awesome dinner!!!

I love the dress!! Very cute. We have a change container and have even taught our 3 year old to put all of her loose change there. It’s gone from a rainy day fund we started years ago to our honeymoon fund. =)

I splurged on a cute yellow calvin klein dress for my engagement pictures and so glad I did. I wanted something I would come back to in 10 years and it wouldn’t be too trendy to still enjoy the pictures. I also highly recommend getting your nails done for the pictures. I never treat myself to that but our photographer took a bunch of “ring hand” pictures.

This is a GREAT use of your change jar! I have been keeping one that even counts your change, but yesterday, I caught FI picking out the silver change to buy a pop at work!

We do it, and it really adds up. We recently merged our independent change-savings, and are going to use it to take each other out to dinner when it’s full.

We have a piggy bank that has a few years of change in it. I wonder how much is in there? This really makes me want to check!!

FI and I do have a change jar! We use it as spending money on vacations! I am always so happy when we cash it in!

I get cash back at the grocery store rounding to the next even dollar amount ($11.32 gets rounded to $15, for example). Because it’s only 2-3 dollars at a time, I don’t notice it missing from my bank account and it adds up REALLY quickly!

that’s a really cute dress! i like it.

i don’t typically carry cash but i do save my pennies through my debit card like kmsull. my purchases are rounded up to the next dollar and the difference is transferred to my savings account. i’ve done it for the past couple of years and managed to save up a good chunk of cash. i love it!

plus it makes balancing my checkbook so much simpler. all whole dollars!

Great dress, we save our change, but it’s for parking meters and laundry. Nowhere near as fun as a dress.

I love your new dress!! As for the moolah– its the little things that really add up!!!!

My bank has a program where everytime you use your debit it will automatically transfer cash to your savings account & for every $100 you save they give you $10. I transfer $5 per transaction & don’t notice its missing- plus free money from the bank? Score!

In Canada our paper money starts at $5… we have coins called toonies ($2) and loonies ($1) so the money can add up super fast here. I hate carrying change, so by the end of the month I have atleast $50-$60 available in coins! :)

Such a cute dress!

We have 2 change jars, one for quarters and one for the rest of the change. Quarters are laundry money, but we save the rest. We haven’t decided what to do with it when its full, but at this point it will probably be wedding-related.

We have a change jar. I just helped roll all of the coins a couple weeks ago, and we had way more money than we could have imagined! Come to think of it, though, I have no idea what he did with it. ^_^ LOL!

Awesome! We have a spaghetti jar that I put change in, but we never really end up getting that much. I usually raid it for parking change periodically, so it never really accumulates too much. After seeing this, though, I might have to try to save more change!

we always joke that we are going to pay for our honeymoon with the change we throw in the jar. we probably wont make it to our honeymoon, but we’ll at least be able to pay for one or two nice dinners while we are there! last time i counted i was downright floored at the ammount of change we accumulate!

Very pretty.
Yes, we throw it in a coffee can. Mr. S used the funds for his bachelor party trip.

We have a big plastic pretzel jar that we’ve been tossing change into since we moved 2 years ago, but it’s gotten so heavy I can barely carry the thing! Maybe I’ll have to get the mister to carry it to TD Bank - they count your change for free in their change machine! Coinstar takes like 9%, so I try to stay away from that!

That’s so funny you posted this — I made Mr. FF buy a bank this weekend because his change keeps piling up everywhere! We found one at Hobby Lobby for $4. It’s pretty big, so maybe we’ll both fill it up and then cash in for something fun! Great idea.

Love it! We have a change jar as well…but I can’t imagine there is more that $14 in there or something…I’ll have to take it in one of these days. I’m sure Mr. Q won’t mind if I use it on me :)

We definitely have a change jar. I recently cashed it in to pay for gas on an unexpected wedding excursion. Too bad it wasn’t on a dress so I’d still see that change sitting around…

We have a Monkey bank! We call her Monica - and she fills up about every month (Loverboy’s job finds him with lots of change) and we’ve cashed it in but haven’t spent it yet. Two months and we have $140!!!
Great dress, btw!

I really like the dress you picked! Our change jar = the top of my FI’s dresser! I always steal quarters from it though, whenever I head into the city for parking meters!
