(We had just landed at a tiny airport in Virginia, picked up our rental car, and hit the road.)
Our very first stop was an unplanned one. We spotted a Whole Foods and we just had to see what kind of vegan delicacies they might carry, and grab a little lunch while we were there. While their vegan selection was slightly lacking, they made up for it by having red beans and rice AND GIANT PICKLES! I <3 pickles.

It was around this time that the innkeeper from our B&B called to inform us that our credit card was declined. She went to run it for the balance of the room before we arrived and it wouldn’t go through. I had a moment of sheer panic before I realized, duh, it was declined since Mr. S just had to cancel his cards. So we gave her my card number, and she mentioned that our room was ready and we could come at any time. This was the best news we had heard all day, it meant no three hour wait before checking in.
We drove for a while through the roads of Charlottesville, Virginia until we made it to a little town called Schuyler, population: 458! We slowly crept down a very long driveway until we finally saw our destination, the White Pig Bed and Breakfast and Pig Sanctuary. Not exactly your typical honeymoon location, but completely perfect for us! The White Pig is a vegan bed and breakfast, and also a place for adorable piggies to get exceptional care and roam free. We had the Jacob Room, which was on the second floor of the darling house out in the woods. We had a private bath (clawfoot tub!!!!!) and a king-sized bed, with huge windows overlooking the piggles and the trees.
Even though we hadn’t slept in a while, we wanted to get adjusted to the local time. We took a 30 minute power nap, a long shower, and then headed out to explore the grounds.
(we don’t get mushrooms like this in LA)
(enjoying our afternoon snack, which happened to be a new flavor of freshly made cupcake every single day. We were spoiled!)

We city folk quickly fell in love with the peaceful atmosphere. It was SO QUIET! I am not used to that kind of quiet. There were no cars, no airplanes, no other people, even (we were staying at the inn on a Monday and Tuesday and we were the only guests there!). The only things we could hear were bugs and birds (and the occasional pig grunt, of course!). It was absolutely amazing.
While roaming the grounds we fell in love with one special pig named Annie:
Annie seemed to like me; the second I started to pet her, she would roll onto her side and put her feet in the air for tummy rubs.
Our three days at the inn were spent like this: wake up and go downstairs for an amazing vegan two course breakfast. Put on exploring clothes and go out in the woods, pet piggies, hike, do yoga, get lost in the woods, scream when spiders land on my arm. Enjoy the huge tub, eat our daily cupcakes and drink lemonade on the porch. Go explore Charlottesville and find a veggie-friendly spot for dinner. Come back, drink brandy on the porch, see billions of stars and listen to bugs and frogs talk to each other. Fall asleep to the sounds of nature, instead of the nature sounds on my sound machine (which I can’t sleep without when I am home and foolishly brought with me).
(Do we look tired here? This is what the Sprinkles look like after not sleeping for 36 hours!)
There were a few surprises for me, as well. Mr. Sprinkle planned a professional massage out in the woods for our second day there, which was blissful. The White Pig has an interesting “massage barn,” a small structure nestled in the trees that holds a massage table, a hot tub, and dozens of cool books and things to look at. Our massage therapist was amazing, and the whole experience was peaceful, calming, and very unique! Our room also held a bottle of wine and box of chocolates waiting for us when we arrived. I don’t even remember the last time I had my own box of chocolates; it was divine!
(We ate a lot of good curry, too!)
When it was time to leave on Wednesday afternoon, we didn’t want to go! We lingered on the porch for as long as we could, and then hopped in the car toward our next destination… where we stayed in the greenest hotel in the U.S., had delicious boba tea, and enjoyed a beautiful rainfall!
