Unveiling the Veil!

October 20th, 2009 @ 2:30 pm by Mrs. Sunbeam

If you remember, about one month before the big day I was still debating about which veil to choose. Truth be told, I liked the third least popular veil the most, but it was also the most expensive option.

While I had been given money to afford the veil, thanks to a generous Momma Sunbeam, I just could not bring myself to spend it! This would reflect my father’s traits in me! $500 for a veil, that I will wear for mere hours? No. Couldn’t do it. But I also couldn’t picture myself without it.

It was go time. I searched for instructions on how to make a veil myself and made several stops back and forth to a fabric store to check out materials while I battled my indecision. Then I came across a response by Mrs. DG, one of Weddingbee’s Hostesses, in a thread offering instructions on how to make a veil to another hive member. I contacted her for the instructions and sent her pictures of what I was going to attempt to make. And then something too nice for words happened - Mrs. DG offered to make the veil for me so she could work up a tutorial for you ladies! She just asked that I send her the materials so I definitely was getting what I wanted.

Scampering off to the store like a kid off to the candy shop, I picked out a lightweight, very flexible ivory tulle with the goal of creating a veil with next to no pouf. I then found some lace that was not only on sale because they had received too much, but that also had a double pattern, so it was like two for one! In other words, if I cut the lace down the center, I’d then have two pieces of the same lace pattern! SCORE.

A few emails and 1.5 weeks, later I had a beautiful veil in my arms that cost me $78 plus shipping to Mrs. DG. Are you ready to see this beauty in action??

I loved it!! Sadly there aren’t any great pictures the veil on our wedding day. Most of the pro pictures were cropped so you can’t see the whole veil or were taken from too far away, so the hubs took a few pictures at home recently so you can really get a good look at it (below). Didn’t Mrs. DG do such a good job!?

Up next: The TUTORIAL!! Save yourself some serious moolah and get on the DIY train with this one.

Have you attempted to DIY your veil? If you have tips or advice for the other ladies in the hive, please share!

Wow! That veil is gorgeous!! I seriously love it!! I am in love with mantilla veils and just bought one from an amazing etsy seller. $80 later it was at my house and ready to be tried on!

Thank you so much! I had been debating a veil for the past few weeks and I was hoping to be able to find a great DIY guide to save the dough. This is perfect and this is absolutely beautiful on you!
Congrats & Kudos to DG!

That’s really pretty!! Great job DG! I’ll be having the FMIL make mine. She made FSIL’s for her wedding for only $20! That’s way better than the $200 I’ve seen around here!

So gorgeous — I’ve wondered how hard it would be to DIY a mantilla style veil. She did a great job!

I just made myself a cathedral length veil! It was so easy, the hardest part was trying to see the clear thread as I was sewing it :) So much cheaper to make than buying, and I’m not very crafty!

I would never guess that veil didn’t come from a bridal store. I’ve got a crafty friend who has made veils for others & offered to make mine. I hope it turns out as well as yours did!

WOW, that is amazing, can’t wait for the tutorial. Did you get the fabric and lace in the bay area? If so, can you let me know where? that is exactly the kind of lace I’m looking for.

@KtobeC: absolutely - I got it at Britex because it’s so close to my work place. It was one of the laces in the clear shelves of the counter at the lace area and - when i was there - it was on the bottom shelf. I can’t say what it was called exactly, but make sure you tell them about the mirrored pattern! I know they had a similar lace that had sequence as well. Good luck!

:) I’m so happy that it turned out ok. I had a blast doing it, but I was really nervous about how Mrs. Sunbeam would like it.

I have to say that one thing that made it turn out so well is that Mrs. Sunbeam bought really quality materials. When you are saving by making the veil yourself, you might as well get the best materials you can afford!
