Miss Rainbow, Tampa Age and Occupation: 22, Makeup Artist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Electrical Engineer/Programmer Engagement Date: November 27, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Gamble Plantation About Me: I'm a quirky (and slightly Type-A) freelance makeup artist who was born in Washington State, raised in Alabama, and now living with my one and only in sunny Florida. I'm fashion and beauty obsessed, and have recently discovered my inner domestic diva extraordinaire. I'm a wannabe chef, decorating addict, and trying desperately to be as crafty as possible---albeit only with a glue gun. I'm hopelessly in love with my fiance, and all things sparkly and feathery. Despite the glittery exterior, I'm a total hippie on the inside. When I'm not making up pretty faces, I love doing what I can to help people, animals, and the environment. Someday the FI and I will change the world, but first we're tackling our modern-vintage-Marie-Antoinette-meets-Alice-in-Wonderland inspired wedding. I just can't wait to be Mrs. Rainbow!

Invitation Evolution

October 21st, 2009 @ 11:55 am by Miss Rainbow

In the beginning, I was fairly calm about finding invitations. I figured, ‘Whatever, everyone will just throw them in the trash, anyway. Heck, I’ll just run up to the store and pick some up!’ Yeah, apparently not. Once I became a wedding blog addict, I started seeing all the different (jaw dropping) invitations out there. Wow, this ain’t no “Party City” shindig, eh? Whoops, I think my Alabama is showing. ;)

I started looking online for some chic, fairly simple, inexpensive invitations. To be quite honest, I couldn’t care less about all that letterpressed, engraved, embossed, Gocco-ed mumbo jumbo. If you can’t feel the letters raised off the page of our invites, it doesn’t matter to me. As long as they’re pretty and get the point across. First stop: Wedding Paper Divas. They have letterpress, but I would have opted for their standard digital. It’s much cheaper, and like I said, It just doesn’t matter all that much to me. I was thisclose to ordering invitations from them. Their site is so easy to use, you can toy with the wording and fonts, and you get to see the preview instantly. This was our first choice when our colors were still pink/green/gold:

Oh my, how my tastes have changed. All thanks to the drug that is Weddingbee, I stumbled upon this fabulous invitation suite via Flamingo:

Why’d you have to do it to me ’bee? Why? After laying my eyes on that uh.may.zing chandelier graphic, I knew I had to have it. I have an unhealthy obsession with chandeliers. I know, I live in Florida, but I really want to replace all of our ceiling fans with chandeliers. I want one in every room. Every room. Bathroom included. Fortunately for our budget (but unfortunately for me) Mr. Rainbow ain’t havin’ that. Real life chandeliers are expensive! So, I set off to find some great chandelier invitations. Apparently these are not all that easy to come by, or maybe I’m just picky… I’ll let you decide!

I was SO excited when I saw these invitations on Papeterie. They, too, have letterpress as well as flat printing. Of course, I would have opted to save some coin and gone with flat printing had I actually ordered these. Again, I came thisclose, but decided I should look around some more before I made the final decision. Etsy, here I come! (Is there anything that you can’t find on Etsy?!)

I really liked the simplicity of this design from Etsy vendor, Designer Pi. The fiance, however, was not a huge fan. Next up:

Wedding Invitation Set of 50 Invites, RSVP, Map Cards, Seals - Chandelier

We both agreed that we liked this design, from Mon Cher Designs, the best so far. We even got so serious about it as to show it to my mom. That’s right, it met the parents. Told ya we were getting serious! She was into it, too. We were ready to take the next step and start the design process when I found (on WB, of course) the invitation to end all invitations…

BUT! If you want to find out, you’ll have to stick around for the next installment of Invitation Evolution.

Did the dreaded internet (and its endless supply of inspiration) force you to rethink some of your initial decisions? Did you have a hard time committing to your invitations?

I was totally on the same page with you about invites. I figured it was just throwaway paper, so who cared? I even went so far to buy print-your-own kits, but returned them after I had a change of heart (and got addicted to the Bee!).

Right there with you. I’ve since changed my mind 100 times, if not more. Thankfully I hadn’t purchased anything yet, but like you, I came VERY close.

I was totally in the same boat as you. I had ordered samples and was ready to order some cute simple ones from Modern Girl Invitations. Then I discovered weddingbee and now I have become very familar with istockphoto and Inkscape and am determined to make my own, that way all of my lovely paper details can coordinate. Love that last chandelier one!

I feel your pain Miss Rainbow - everything that was once on my Do Not Care list, after reading too much Weddingbee (is there such thing?), has slowly migrated to the Deets I Love list! ARGH!

Loving the chandeliers, can’t wait to see the final choice!

We found our Save the Dates on etsy, and now I sort of want to model our entire stationary suite off of that scheme. I’m stressed about invites, though, because I want to do a relationship timeline on our invites and I have not the slightest clue where to start to find someone who could make that happen.

We were on track for economical, but nice invitations from a local shop…until…HE flipped open the Crane Letterpress book that was laying on the table. I’m thankful to the ‘bee boards for helping me find an etsy vendor to press them :)

OH…and I thought I was the only one who used the phrase “my Alabama is showing” ;)

Those all look awesome - I think the ones by Designer Pi are my fav, personally. The internet is dangerous for wedding planning … even though it’s my best friend at times, too!

I love the blue one from Mon Cher. I’m really into graphic contrast, and having the image run off the page just grabs more attention to the chandelier. I am having the hardest time deciding on invitation design. I’ve been scouring the web, but that only seems to be making the problem bigger. There’s too many possibilities!

I am still going with the W/P Diva route..its an affordable option for me. I chose to spend our wedding budgt on other things, but I have tempted (oh how I have been tempted) to do something else! My FI put the brakes on that last night..he he

Those chandelier invitations are all so beautiful

I’m doing our invitations myself, because, well, art & design is my thang, and c’mon, I clearly do not have enough on my plate. lol. I’m a masochist, what can I say.

The internet is an evil, evil place when it comes to inspiring changes of heart! My invites are evolving in a crazy downward spiral where I incorporate EVERYTHING I’ve loved online….and hence will end up probably taking me 5 months to make!

I have done and redone my invitation designs 1,000 times. Sometimes it’s the lettering and sometimes the design.

Miss Rainbow, I have been part of the hive for a while, but I never commented till your post as I totally agree with you. I must admit that I have a love hate relationship with the internet. I have now changed everything all thanks to the internet.
