About Mrs. Peep Toe

Reviewing Our Registries

October 21st, 2009 @ 1:20 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

We began our registry over 15 months ago at Williams-Sonoma; fought our way through registering at Crate and Barrel; and jumped for joy when we found some common interests at Bloomingdale’s.

I spent a lot of time getting our registries just right before the wedding. And over the last four months, I have spent even more time returning, exchanging and re-thinking our registry—seriously, why did I think we needed three mini-butter dishes??

And at the end of the day, not all stores or registries are created equal. So, I thought I’d give an account of each of our registry experiences and throw in my favorite items at each store for good measure.

Up first, Williams-Sonoma - Grade: A-. WS is great, the people who work there are super nice, and it helps that the flagship store is only blocks away from where I work. That said, their online and in-store departments are completely separate. So, for example, if Aunt Mary buys you something online and it shows up broken or if you didn’t register for it in the first place, they’ll return the item in the store, but they have to mail you a gift card.

*You MUST register for a good set of knives- and these Globals Rock!

The good news is, while very few of their mainstay items go on sale, you get unlimited use of your 10% completion card for the first six months after your wedding, they track who buys you what and have a thank you card manager.

And an even better perk, you can use your WS gift cards interchangeably at Pottery Barn and West Elm, which is AWESOME.

Next, Crate and Barrel - Grade: B-/C. Oh Crate and Barrel, how I love and hate you all at once. I will say that the majority of our gifts were from C&B. The worst part about registering at C&B is you can only use your 10% completion once online and once in the store. Since I’ve been buying and returning bits over time, I’ve found this very limiting.

* I love my new organized kitchen shelves thanks to these babies.

The best part is if you return items under $99, they will give you cash. And you can use their gift cards at the much more affordable CB2 and the C&B outlet.

*Thanks to gobs of gift cards we got a much needed new rug for our living room at CB2. You like?

The absolute worst part about C&B is that they don’t really track who buys you what. Again, let’s say Aunt Mary goes to the store and buys you glasses off your registry and she buys a pizza stone for herself. The pizza stone will show up on your registry as bought, but it wasn’t actually for you, and you have no way of knowing who bought that present, if it was for you, or if it went missing. C’est la vie—we never did get that pizza stone. I also forgot to write down who gave me a platter, but since it was bought in the store, we will never know.

Bloomingdale’s - A+. I never wanted to register at Bloomingdale’s, I thought it was too pretentious, but really, Bloomingdale’s is a bride’s dream. They will let you return pretty much anything and you have unlimited use of your 10% completion discount.

Reviewing Our Registries : wedding registry Coffee
*This puppy saves us a lot of trips to Peet’s and Starbucks.

And the sales, my oh my, the sales. Everything on our registry has gone on sale multiple times over the last 14 months, which means our guests were able to take advantage of the sales. And on top of that, they often email you 20% off completion codes, or even better, an additional 20% on top of your completion discount. Since we didn’t register for china or silver or crystal, at the end of the day, things on our Bloomies registry were often cheaper than our C&B registry.

And finally, I have to say the service at Bloomie’s was top notch.

I also want to give an honorable mention to Bed Bath and Beyond. While we didn’t register there, they are great about returning items—with a receipt you’ll get cash, and without one you’ll get store credit. And you can’t pass up the 20% discount cards.

Reviewing Our Registries : wedding registry 8352315
*My absolute favorite wedding purchase. Worth. Every. Penny.

Did anyone else have similar experiences? How would you rate your registries?

I registered at BB&B and Crate & Barrel and out of the two I much preferred BB&B. I have to say, though, I wish they all had the same completion discount like Bloomies, that would be awesome!

Wow, this was super helpful. I registered at WS and have found a couple challenges so far, but overall have been pretty pleased. We also registered at Macys but no feedback yet on that.

I have the Dyson and I love it too! It’s amazing (and just a little gross) how much dog hair ends up that bin!

Wish I had this as a resource a few months ago! We registered at the usual trio of bbb, macys, and cb. We’ll see how they all work out in the end… but so far, I’m not planning on returning anything!!!

We did WS and C&B as well and would rate them almost the same as you for many of the same reasons. The only real complaint we had with W/S was from guests who wanted to use online shipping but it seems to be based on price more than weight. So our serving set would cost the same to ship as one of the Swedish shelving. And don’t those C&B storage canisters rock? We love them!

We also had a Target registry since it’s one of the few national places near my hometown. In addition to all the standard complaints about their return policies which we knew about ahead of time so I won’t complain about, they also will place other purchases onto the registry…so we started seeing diapers and clothing appear on our registry as “purchased” and since it is already purchased you can’t delete it.

I worked for Pottery Barn all through high school and college and now I work at West Elm (another Williams-Sonoma brand) corporate office. Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma both are super intense about having good service for brides and grooms registering. If you are interested in registering some stores will even let you come in before they open or after they close to do your registry so you aren’t fighting crowds and get on on one service. Glad my company got an A-! Lol.

Thanks for this review. We’re still deciding where we’ll register and this is helpful. I’m sad about C&B - I was hoping for better from them.

Honestly, BB&B is amazing; we registered there. We are moving soon and do not have storage for our registry items, so we returned almost everything, got cash for it with absolutely NO problems (even without a receipt, if it is on your registry they will give you cash), and they allow you to keep you registry open up to two years - which works out perfectly since we plan on purchasing things from the registry once we are in the new, more spacious place. Also, there is no reason guests - or YOU! - should pay full price for anything at BB&B with the fabulous 20% discount coupons. Those are great for family members or guests that need to budget gift amounts, or that would like to get you a slightly more expensive gift for less money. For those not too keen on using coupons, bear in mind that 20% off of a $299.99 Kitchen Aid mixer equals $60 in savings - that is nothing to scoff at!!

Thanks SO much for this post! We’re just starting our registry - I think we’ll switch our Macy’s to Bloomie’s…FH likes Bloomie’s better anyway.

Have any of you brides tried the Amazon.com registry? Amazon was recommended by a few married friends - not so much for all the completion perks, but for affordability for guests (since they can buy from any seller & Amazon will support returns). Also, this seems great for those who may want some not so traditional items (FH & I have lived together for 9 years now, so we have most cookware & home decor), like HDTVs or kayak or scrapbooking furniture.

Saving the best for last, Amazon has a Universal registry button - if you see something on any web page from any store or seller (even Etsy.com!), you can click a button (that you put in your toolbar from the Amazon registry site), fill in the listed price & state in the comment box where to find it, & it will appear on your Amazon.com registry! I’ve just started trying it out, so I’ll post updates on the boards in gifts as it comes together (or falls apart).

Sorry for the long post…:P

We originally registered at Target (to start) but now I’m re-thinking that registry. We’ve had problems with it from the get-go, so I might go the CB/BBB route.

I didn’t know that Amazon has a registry..nice! I am going the C/B and macy’s route. no complaints. Despite the completion process, can’t beat the C/B in my opinion. I love their stuff!

We registered at C&B and had no problems with them and got great service. Using the 10% discount only 2x helped us to not buy too much stuff!

Miss FF, I’ve heard that the Target registry makes it difficult if you want to returns items without a receipt, etc. That is part of the reason we did not register there.

Thanks for this! I’ve been told to go Bed Bath and Beyond - but i never considered Bloomingdales … Williams & Sonoma is a great store … and so is Create & Barrel … but I’m not so sure I’ll register there since they didn’t do such a great job for you! And, btw, if you find yourself the proud owner of a 2nd Dyson - just send it my way, my carpets will thank you!
