Mr. Rainbow and I have a history of keeping our Thanksgivings pretty low-key. I think that stems from being “un-invited” to my FMIL’s Thanksgiving Dinner in 2007, the first year we were together… and yes, you heard that right. Un-invited. Anyway, moving on… after calling my mom half-way to tears that year, she invited us down to South Florida to spend Thanksgiving with her, even though she doesn’t generally celebrate Thanksgiving. We thought about it, but decided we’d just have our own little Thanksgiving at home - just me, him, and our dog, Sophie.
When Thanksgiving 2008 rolled around, we stuck to the plan: me, him, Sophie, Spade (our new furry addition), and way too much food. Little did I know, this year’s Thanksgiving would take on a whole new meaning. Let’s start at the beginning:
Thanksgiving morning started out pretty calmly, but that didn’t last very long. This had to be the Thanksgiving where nothing went right. The thermometer was broken, we didn’t have a turkey baster, when we took the turkey out of the oven it wasn’t cooked, yadda, yadda, yadda. It was just one of those days. At one point I said to Mr. Rainbow: “Thank God we’re not having dinner with my dad, because he always makes us say what we’re thankful for, and right now, I’m not thankful for anything!’” All the while I was freaking out, Mr. R was busy trying to calm me down, stashing the ring, and trying not to let me figure out what was going on. Poor guy, sometimes I don’t know how he does it!
After multiple kitched debacles, we finally sat down to eat—yes, dogs included. Mr. Rainbow asked me what I was thankful for, and I responded with, “Well honey, I’m thankful for you, our dogs, my family and friends.” I asked him what he was thankful for, and he said, “I’m thankful for the dogs, and my friends and family.”
Uhhh… what?! See, if you were paying attention, you’ll notice that he left out one very important detail: Me. Helloooo, what about me?! After an uncomfortably long pause (thanks sweetheart), he got down on one knee, ring in hand, and said, “and of course, most of all, I’m thankful for you. Will you marry me?”
Well, YES!!!
How he pulled off surprising me will remain a mystery. I’m too much of a control freak to not figure things out, but my family was quite impressed that he pulled off the surprise. I promptly called my mom and aunt (and everyone else I know), and they screamed on the phone for a good 10 minutes. It was the icing on the cake to what became the best Thanksgiving ever. And now I present to you, my pet rock:
Ooooh, aaaah, isn’t she pretty? I love her so much. She’s shown here with the band, which I can’t wait to wear!
