Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

So far, the vendors we’ve talked to have been professional, friendly, and not at all pushy. I have to admit: I was expecting the worst! So when I got home from watching the Patriots game one afternoon (go Pats!) and received this email, I was amused.

Hi P.Chips -
Your fiance is probably watching a football game. And it’s a rainy Sunday afternoon.

What better time to call your potential wedding videographer and talk about the sample DVD he sent you and ask if he still has your wedding date available?

Maybe even ask if he’s running a promotion or has any discount offers.

BTW – my favorite team is not playing right now so I have plenty of time to answer your questions or reply to an email. Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

XX

Ohhh reeeeallly Mr. Douché? Yeah? That’s the sales pitch you’re going to use?

I thank you for your email. You got me! I was sitting around sighing at the screen asking, “Who’s winning the match??” while my better half (and please, let’s not get him involved, sir, this is clearly woman’s work) caught this foosball everyone seems to be jibber-jabbering about.

Nope, it is a rainy Sunday afternoon and while my Mister watches the New England Bruins beat up the South Dakota Raiders, I cannot believe I didn’t think to contact that potential wedding videographer who sent me a DVD sample! I mean, I was sitting there, cooling the pies on the windowsill and darning my honey’s socks, while I could have been emailing this videographer inquiring whether he was running any specials!

What have your vendor experiences been like? Have you been surprised by any, uh… out-of-the-box sales pitches?

LOL. oh man, as the resident sports fanatic in our relationship, i would definitely be put off by this. my guy usually only watches sports because i’m watching!

Hahhahaa… that’s kind of funny, though. ;)

I can honestly say that I have not contacted ANYONE who’s followed up with me after sending me a sample. I always like to think their work should speak for itself, and I’ll get in touch with them if I like it enough. ;)

Before I started wedding planning, I would have found it hard to believe that “professionals” would send stuff like this. This is funny because it’s so awful.

At least he made one decision easy for you. :)

Seriously…he’s talking to a New England woman. I’m from Boston and all the women I know (at least the ones I associate with) are total sports fanatics.

We haven’t gotten anything like that…usually they just wait for me to contact THEM which is how I like it.

Hmm.. wonder how much business that vendor has gotten from their follow up mean-mails?

Wow…that’s so random. ^_^

My weird vendor experience:
I got a phone call from a DJ company that I’d emailed to ask for a price quote. He was asking me all the usual questions about when and where, then he asked me, “Who do you mostly want to cater to at your wedding from a music standpoint? Young people, old people?” I was like, “Um…young people, I guess? We like all sorts of music but we want to make sure there’s lots of dancing and that everyone has a good time.”
Then VERY condescendingly he goes, “Ohhhhh…” and proceeds to talk at me for 15 minutes about how they don’t cater to just one age group, they like to make sure EVERYONE is having a good time and frankly they play more than just top 40 so if I’m just looking for “club music” (said with a sneer) I should try this other company. I try to interject that we love all sorts of music including oldies and country and want them played at our wedding, but he just keeps talking. He tells me a long pointless story about a wedding he went to where all the men in cowboy hats had the last name of Jackson (???) and loved his variety of music and how he bought a ton of new country songs from iTunes during the reception that he knew they’d like, then finished it up with telling me that if I didn’t care about ensuring all my guests had a good time, then we weren’t a good fit. :O

I was totally flabbergasted. So I just said very shortly, “Thanks for calling. Bye.” and hung up. Srsly! Don’t make me specifically answer a question just so you can then judge me on an opinion I didn’t really give and you won’t let me defend! I want everyone to have a good time, too! Geez!

I’m a huge sports fan but wasn’t at all offended. I think it was light-hearted and was clearly tongue-in-cheek. I’d actually like to know my vendors have a sense of humor in addition to the skill and vision to create a professional product. This wouldn’t turn me off at all as my decision would be more heavily influenced by that sample DVD and vendor reviews that I tend to spend a crazy amount of time reading!

At least he didn’t ask you to send back the DVD if you weren’t going to sign on!

I thought it was funny, but that sort of thing can easily rub someone the wrong way. Hopefully you didn’t like the sample :)

HAHA, this is hilarious! I’m definitely the sports fan in our relationship, but regardless, I’d be insulted by this ridiculous sales tactic. They are certainly taking a risk with that one!

I had a vendor who had a great feeling for via email tell me, half an hour into the meeting I had driven over an hour to get to and my fiance and I had taken a half day off of work for, that he didn’t think he was the right DJ for me. Uhm… really? He was also completely unprepared for our meeting, even though all of our correspondence was via email, and he could have just printed the email out. He had no idea who we were, where our wedding way, or when it was.

Total waste.

I don’t like when people make assuming slightly-sexist comments either. Women are huge sports fans as well as men. I love me some Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen! Go Vikings!

I wouldn’t be offended at all. I think its great when vendors follow up, and especially when they write something personal instead of just a generic copy-paste message. I don’t think it sounds rude, I think its hilarious:)

I actually thought it was pretty funny and good way to get my attention knowing that my inbox is probably full of vendor emails. I wouldn’t have gotten my undies in a bunch over it and would have mentioned that I was busy watching the game LOL
