Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

So far, the vendors we’ve talked to have been professional, friendly, and not at all pushy. I have to admit: I was expecting the worst! So when I got home from watching the Patriots game one afternoon (go Pats!) and received this email, I was amused.

Hi P.Chips -
Your fiance is probably watching a football game. And it’s a rainy Sunday afternoon.

What better time to call your potential wedding videographer and talk about the sample DVD he sent you and ask if he still has your wedding date available?

Maybe even ask if he’s running a promotion or has any discount offers.

BTW – my favorite team is not playing right now so I have plenty of time to answer your questions or reply to an email. Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

XX

Ohhh reeeeallly Mr. Douché? Yeah? That’s the sales pitch you’re going to use?

I thank you for your email. You got me! I was sitting around sighing at the screen asking, “Who’s winning the match??” while my better half (and please, let’s not get him involved, sir, this is clearly woman’s work) caught this foosball everyone seems to be jibber-jabbering about.

Nope, it is a rainy Sunday afternoon and while my Mister watches the New England Bruins beat up the South Dakota Raiders, I cannot believe I didn’t think to contact that potential wedding videographer who sent me a DVD sample! I mean, I was sitting there, cooling the pies on the windowsill and darning my honey’s socks, while I could have been emailing this videographer inquiring whether he was running any specials!

What have your vendor experiences been like? Have you been surprised by any, uh… out-of-the-box sales pitches?

LOL. oh man, as the resident sports fanatic in our relationship, i would definitely be put off by this. my guy usually only watches sports because i’m watching!

Hahhahaa… that’s kind of funny, though. ;)

I can honestly say that I have not contacted ANYONE who’s followed up with me after sending me a sample. I always like to think their work should speak for itself, and I’ll get in touch with them if I like it enough. ;)

Before I started wedding planning, I would have found it hard to believe that “professionals” would send stuff like this. This is funny because it’s so awful.

At least he made one decision easy for you. :)

Seriously…he’s talking to a New England woman. I’m from Boston and all the women I know (at least the ones I associate with) are total sports fanatics.

We haven’t gotten anything like that…usually they just wait for me to contact THEM which is how I like it.

Wow…that’s so random. ^_^

My weird vendor experience:
I got a phone call from a DJ company that I’d emailed to ask for a price quote. He was asking me all the usual questions about when and where, then he asked me, “Who do you mostly want to cater to at your wedding from a music standpoint? Young people, old people?” I was like, “Um…young people, I guess? We like all sorts of music but we want to make sure there’s lots of dancing and that everyone has a good time.”
Then VERY condescendingly he goes, “Ohhhhh…” and proceeds to talk at me for 15 minutes about how they don’t cater to just one age group, they like to make sure EVERYONE is having a good time and frankly they play more than just top 40 so if I’m just looking for “club music” (said with a sneer) I should try this other company. I try to interject that we love all sorts of music including oldies and country and want them played at our wedding, but he just keeps talking. He tells me a long pointless story about a wedding he went to where all the men in cowboy hats had the last name of Jackson (???) and loved his variety of music and how he bought a ton of new country songs from iTunes during the reception that he knew they’d like, then finished it up with telling me that if I didn’t care about ensuring all my guests had a good time, then we weren’t a good fit. :O

I was totally flabbergasted. So I just said very shortly, “Thanks for calling. Bye.” and hung up. Srsly! Don’t make me specifically answer a question just so you can then judge me on an opinion I didn’t really give and you won’t let me defend! I want everyone to have a good time, too! Geez!

I’m a huge sports fan but wasn’t at all offended. I think it was light-hearted and was clearly tongue-in-cheek. I’d actually like to know my vendors have a sense of humor in addition to the skill and vision to create a professional product. This wouldn’t turn me off at all as my decision would be more heavily influenced by that sample DVD and vendor reviews that I tend to spend a crazy amount of time reading!

I had a vendor who had a great feeling for via email tell me, half an hour into the meeting I had driven over an hour to get to and my fiance and I had taken a half day off of work for, that he didn’t think he was the right DJ for me. Uhm… really? He was also completely unprepared for our meeting, even though all of our correspondence was via email, and he could have just printed the email out. He had no idea who we were, where our wedding way, or when it was.

Total waste.

I wouldn’t be offended at all. I think its great when vendors follow up, and especially when they write something personal instead of just a generic copy-paste message. I don’t think it sounds rude, I think its hilarious:)

I actually thought it was pretty funny and good way to get my attention knowing that my inbox is probably full of vendor emails. I wouldn’t have gotten my undies in a bunch over it and would have mentioned that I was busy watching the game LOL

Did anybody catch the guide to football in last month’s Modern Bride? I was pretty offended. And it included a snarky comment about how “even if your guy has been really involved, you’re about to lose him to football.”

Wow, I would have definitely been turned off by that email! This would be one of the times when the feminist in me rears her head - I can’t stand when people (especially those who would like your money) make gender-specific assumptions.
@SpinningJenny - ugh what a nasty convo! Hopefully you’ve found a better DJ now.

I think he was hoping you would answer “I want the music to cater to ALL of my guests. Both young and old.”

I bet he was surprised you actually answered that you wanted to cater to just the young ones.

@Mrs. French Bulldog: Oh no, I’m still red? Weird!
@kjpugs: I got a new color because my character and Miss French Fries’ character looked a bit too similar. We were all getting confused!
@Steph: He was creative, I’ll give him that much! :)
@Gilneas: That is crazy! Who does that??
@SpinningJenny: That is bananas!! What a jerk! But afterwards, makes for a pretty funny story!
@diorable: It was definitely a risky move; I can see how many wouldn’t think twice about it. But for me, no thanks! And to be honest, I don’t know where the put the darn demo! :)

I think the weirdest e-mail interaction I had with a vendor was a printer.

Me: How much would it be for 120 invitations with printed envelopes and reply cards?
Her: Here is our price for 100 invitations and reply cards, with no envelopes.
Me: OK, but how much for the set I need — 120 invitations with printed envelopes and reply cards?
Her: Here is our price for 120 invitations and envelopes, with no reply cards.
Me: … uh, I decided to go with someone else, thanks.

And the sad part is, that printer has a really good reputation and wonderful samples, and the person I ended up hiring was awful! If the contact person from this company had actually read and answered my question, I probably would have hired them. Sigh.

“I mean, I was sitting there, cooling the pies on the windowsill and darning my honey’s socks …” <— too funny.

I’ve had a difficult time with valet companies. The first vendor that contacted me quoted me a ridiculously astronomical price. When I responded asking for a breakdown in charges that would account for that amount, he said, “This may sound like a lot of money, but you’re throwing a high-class event at a high-class venue, so you’re going to need to start wrapping your head around spending high-class money.”

Ummm… NEXT!

That would really piss me off. I haven’t missed a Pats game in at least 15 years. I most definitely scheduled my bridesmaid dress shopping trip this weekend around the game. That vendor would not be involved in my wedding (although we’re not having a videographer anyway).

Hilarious post, Ms. P. Chips! I was rolling.

A vendor with gender-specific comments like that would get some raised eyebrows from me, being a HUGE sports fan (one of the Irish Faithful/49er Faithful - gotta love how both my teams use “faithful” rather than “nation” - and a dyed-in-the-wool SF Giants fan). Don’t know if it would keep me from hiring him if he had great reviews, tho’. If we’re thinking of working with them, FH & I both drop hints about our preferences…one of which is that our wedding will NOT interfere with any major sporting event. (Late June is PERFECT for that, btw - NBA Finals are done, Football hasn’t started, MLB is in regular season, but not near the All-Star game, & soccer is on hiatus for the World Cup, but not at Semis or Finals)

@jhphi: I guess it depends on what you’re passionate about…if a vendor had sent an email with a snarky comment about how his/her style of wedding is the kind to leave the kids at home, a single mother bride or kindergarten teacher bride MIGHT find it unprofessional - even tho’ the vendor didn’t know the background of their potential client. (this comment is NOT meant to imply that all single mothers or kindergarten teachers must always want kids at their weddings, either)

I would have emailed him back and asked him if his team being on bye was hurting his fantasy score this week and if he could please not contact you on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday night. I’m all football from August through February. Jeepers. I don’t care if it wasn’t meant to be “anti-feminist”, you can’t put sarcastic stuff into an email when you aren’t sure how it is going to be received. What a sexist pig.

I guess I am in the minority, but I thought it was kind of funny. I agree with those here who have said the email was a great way to stand out. Unconventional sales tactic? Sure, but when you have email’s going back and forth between numerous vendors, you’ll remember this one. And…I think it shows a videographer with a sense of humor, which is just as important as someone who is good at what they do. I want someone who is going to have fun working with me. I’ve been to too many weddings where the photographer and videographer didn’t want to be bothered and rushed everything along. I don’t think he was trying to be a douche’ or sexist. He was being playful and tongue-in-cheek. It might not work for everyone but it would for me. It would atleast make me give his work a closer look. Just my thoughts.
