Mrs. Rainbow, Tampa Age and Occupation: 22, Makeup Artist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Electrical Engineer/Programmer Engagement Date: November 27, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Gamble Plantation About Me: I'm a quirky (and slightly Type-A) freelance makeup artist who was born in Washington State, raised in Alabama, and now living with my one and only in sunny Florida. I'm fashion and beauty obsessed, and have recently discovered my inner domestic diva extraordinaire. I'm a wannabe chef, decorating addict, and trying desperately to be as crafty as possible---albeit only with a glue gun. I'm hopelessly in love with my fiance, and all things sparkly and feathery. Despite the glittery exterior, I'm a total hippie on the inside. When I'm not making up pretty faces, I love doing what I can to help people, animals, and the environment. Someday the FI and I will change the world, but first we're tackling our modern-vintage-Marie-Antoinette-meets-Alice-in-Wonderland inspired wedding. I just can't wait to be Mrs. Rainbow!
About Mrs. Rainbow

Flow-err… WHAT?!

October 22nd, 2009 @ 12:24 pm by Mrs. Rainbow

Recently I went to meet with a few florists in my area. Don’t ask me who; I ran out so quickly I don’t even remember their names. I went in with absolutely no idea whatsoever about the costs of wedding flowers. I walked out with the worst case of sticker shock I’ve ever had. Where’s that rascally Ashton Kutcher? I must be on Punk’d… right? Yeah, no, not so much.

I made the common bridal mistake of thinking that because I don’t want “a ton of flowers”, they can’t possibly want to charge me thousands of dollars for something that will die in a few days. Boy, was I wrong. A couple thousand was the minimum. I was kinda bummed because I met with one florist that I really really liked. Not throw $2000 dollars into the wind liked, though. I decided that a floral designer just wasn’t in the cards for me. There are things that I can justify spending a large amount of money on, but something that will literally DIE in a few days? H-E-double hockey sticks (oh yeah, I pulled that one out from 1995) no.

I then went to a local wholesale florist called Jennie’s. Unfortunately their phone number is not 867-5309, but that doesn’t take away from their super awesomeness. I don’t know who Jennie is, but she’s my new BFF. Their prices were amazing. I called my mom and told her about Jennie’s and how they saved my soul (I guess today is musical reference day). A few days passed and I was still on a Jennie’s high, then it hit me… uhm… I have to put all these flowers together the day before the wedding? Transport them there? Make sure they stay all pretty? I don’t have a refrigerator that I can dedicate solely to flowers! Me no likey.

I called my dad and told him about my flower struggles. I was stuck between a rock—getting them at a great price, but having to assemble the flowers the day before the wedding—and a poo place—those insane people called “Floral Designers” who want a million billion dollars, an arm, a leg, and my first born. Dear ol’ dad suggested fakes. My initial reaction was, “Look dad, I love you… but fake flowers? Ew.” Little did I know, this man was on to something! I went to Michaels looking for… I’m not sure what, but I ended up in their floral department. Wow, fakes have come a LOOONG way. I bought a few and decided to see what I could come up with. After a few trials, I decided that fakes were definitely the way to go—they were beautiful and I could assemble them all months in advance. It was the solution of my dreams!

Stay tuned to see what I whipped up with my fakies!

I went to a florist with (what I thought) was a BIG flower budget and she came back at me with carnations. um….wha?? it wasn’t $10,000 or anything but it certianly wasn’t chump change. I’m still so mad! lol.

Looking forward to see what you come up with.

Totally with you on the sticker shock for flowers…we decided to skip real flowers and have non-floral centerpeices and bouquets. No regrets whatsoever. If I was a flower lover, maybe I would have sprung for the extra cost, but it wasn’t worth it for us.

Fake flowers are a great solution! I honestly don’t know why I didn’t go that route. Not only can you take your time making them, but you can keep it afterward too! (My bouquet, um, got moldy after the wedding. Weird/gross.) I’ve seen really good sales on Michael’s floral too. Like 60% off, etc. If your local store has a mailer in the newspaper, watch it like a hawk!

The whole “flower” part of the wedding is the part I’m least looking forward to planning - for exactly the reasons you’ve given! UGH! :)

My bouquet, my girls bouquets and our corsages were all silk flowers. No one could have guessed and I have my bouquet displayed on our coffee table. I’m so glad I went that route, as I can look at my gorgeous bouquet every day!

Just make sure to store your bouquets in a box or somewhere where the dust will keep off of them until your wedding day. Then the day of we just spent a minute or so “fluffing” the stems back to life.

I went the wholesale route and had a friend assemble them the morning of. She was thrilled to be a part of my day and to help me out and I got a great deal! Way to think outside of the (riduclously high priced) florist box!

I’m excited to see what you come up with! I know that “fakes” have come a long way like you said — I’m sure they’ll look beautiful (and stay looking that way for a long time)!

Lovely! I bet they’re going to turn out gorgeous. Just FYI, I gave our florist my budget and she was able to work within it. And it was less than half of $2000. We had bouquets, bouts, and centerpieces done by her. Anyway, it can be done. And I was OBSESSED with our flowers. Can’t wait to show them to all of you!

I’d agree there are options to get real flowers that are cheaper. I worked with a woman who grew and sold flowers at the farmers market. She wasn’t a floral designer - but the flowers were beautiful - centerpieces, bouquest, couts, corsages, etc. all for less than $700. Yes the real flowers die, but at least they aren’t plastic and made in china and need to go to the landfill.

Yep, I went to my first florist completely ignorant of flower prices. The wedding will be outside surrounded by wildflowers, so my flower wish-list is very short - and I flipped when I was still quoted $1600. Can’t wait to see what you whipped up, Rainbow.

I went the fake route and I’m so glad I did everytime I look at my bouquet sitting on the mantle now. I had my planner put together the centerpieces and ceremony flowers from sams Club online (simple - threw some flowers in jars) and she stored them in her fridge. All my flowers were less than $400 - woo hoo!

I”m SO happy our venue does flowers. Its something like $400 and you get a small vase with a flower on each table and two bigger arrangements int he colors of your choice. The woman who runs the place said on principle she doesn’t do carnations or babies breath and will try to get the flowers you request. Obviously it isn’t going to be the fanciest flower set up, but the price is really great! The venue is pretty enough it doesn’t need a lot of flowers anyway.

i plan on going the wholesale route and just assembling the night before. of course, i plan on doing non-floral centerpieces so i’ll just be doing the bouquets. easy peasy.

Unfortunatly, we would have to spend at least $600 with the one florist I went to (I’m guessing it’s close to there for others), which isn’t bad compared to other places in the country. I would be so bad at making the bouquets fake, but I know FI’s aunt is probably going to be doing ours-which I guess she could do some fake. I don’t know. We’ll see!

Have you thought of going to a u-cut farm? You could make it a family event!
We got 5 huge buckets of beautiful flowers (zinnias, dahlias, sunflowers, and others) for $50.
I bought 2 other buckets of “filler” flowers (nicer flowers to spruce up the zinnias and dahlias), and that cost $150, straight from the florist.
I bought them on friday, and the wedding was on sunday! You don’t need a fridge - you just need a cool, shaded area.

I spent less than $600 on flowers, we found a florist that charges wholesale prices and then an hourly fee for her time. I even got fresh flower petals down my 130 foot aisle!

I’m not sure if there is anywhere like it in Tampa, but in PA there is a place called the Craft and Flower Warehouse. It’s litterally a warehouse the size of Sam’s Club that is full of artificial flowers! I spent less than $100 on 6 bouquets, 6 bouts, and some other small items. It was awesome and my bouquet makes a great centerpiece :)

Oh, and I forgot to comment that your references in this post (h-e-double hockey sticks, 867-5309) made me giggle out loud. Very clever! :)

sometimes i wish my centerpieces were fake, because then i would have had the chance to make them in advance and not in a rush as actually happened!
hope this works for you!
