Love in the Time of Gluttony

October 23rd, 2009 @ 4:33 pm by Miss Hamster

Many couples meet through mutual friends, or at school, or at a party or coffee shop. In fact, when I want to make a long story short, “Ohh, at school,” is my stock answer when people ask how I met the mans. While all of these scenarios technically apply to us, the real answer, as I had hinted at in my intro post, is… dumplings.

Source

Yes, you heard me correctly. Let me back up a bit and explain.

Before my adventures as the Hammy, I was a food blogger. As the food columnist for my graduate school’s newspaper, I made it my personal mission to find the most scrumptious and best-priced eats in the big NYC. Based on this goal, how could I resist my classmate’s claim that he could eat 30 dumplings at a single go? How attractive, how admirable, in my eyes!

I challenged his claim and promised that if he could eat 30 dumplings, I would pay for his meal (a whole $6!). We went to my favorite hole-in-the-wall dumpling joint, he stopped at the fifteenth dumpling, and the rest is history. He might have lost the bet, but he won me. ;)

I think our story is endearing, but I only share it with a few—I’m just a little embarrassed to admit that we fell for each other over a fit of gluttony. :)

How did you meet your significant other?

We met at school, too… which is also my stock answer. But the real story is that we were making eyes at each other in a choir we both sang in and became friends going on late night walks in the town where our college was located.

This is adorable!!! I’d say that winning you was a way better prize for Mr. Hamster than winning a bet! We met at a bar…so, yeah. We don’t exactly have a “mom friendly” story!

um, most important question ever that you did not address in your post: “where are the best dumplings in NYC???”
We have a few hole-in-the-wall places we go to downtown but I’m dying to hear your thoughts!

Im pretty sure I could eat 30 dumplings in a single sitting. I would be sick for hours, but they are sooooooooooooo yummy!

We met on the intarwebs as well, though my parents still think (and will always think) that we met at a concert (technically, we did!)… unless the best man gets super drunk at our wedding, I’d like it to stay that way. it is also our stock answer for people we dont feel need to know the truth.

What an adorable story :)

We met online on a discussion forum (not unlike this one) and we just sorta clicked. We were really not there to find a significant other but as fate would have it, it happened. He also happened to be the only Dutch guy on that American forum. Funny huh?

we met at a card game where I didn’t know the difference between him and his brother, Mr. B and FBIL were both like “hey” at the same time when they got introduced and there was not differentiation between the two name wise by the introducee. He still thinks it is funny that I didn’t know who was who.

After he added me on the infamous Facebook, he saw me running up a hill after a choir concert, and decided to IM me on the computer and ask me if I wanted to study for the Economics test that was in the morning.

Only the other day did he tell me that it was that evening he was positive that I was in his class, and because he thought “that I was so beautiful” he would ask me to study with him. We started dating 3 weeks later. :P

This was during his junior year and my sophmore year of College, last fall. 11 months later, he is graduating in 2 months and I am senior, and we are getting married with a 4.5 month engagement.

so soon!!

Aw! So cute! I love it when couple’s have original stories. I met my man “on set”. We were cast as bf and gf in a independent film back in my hometown. The set that day was actually my mom’s house, and he already knew my step dad because they were coworkers. The rest is history!

I love hearing everyone’s stories!! It’s funny how your own story can sometimes seem quite typical to yourself, but I sure find them all really sweet :)

@Ms. Scrabble: , @photoist: ,
@E:
As for the dumpling place for the NYC bees, THE place was on Allen St., but it has since closed! Now we go to the one on Mosco :)

@Mrs. Mouse: I only bought 5 at a time because I doubted his claim ;)

I’d love to incorporate dumplings into the wedding somehow - thanks for the great ideas! :)

hahahaha… oh dumplings. when I first moved here, I got sooo sooo sooo sick from eating tons and tons of dumplings in one sitting. I’d actually be surprised if I didn’t eat more than 30 - we were at a dumpling only banquet, and there were more than a dozen varieties on the table, and I tried all of them at least once. BUT I was super sick afterwards. It was at least a month before I could eat dumplings again. :)

next time i’m in nyc i’ll definitely have to find your new dumpling hangout.

my husband and i met through piano. we lived in the dorms and played at the same piano. one day i heard him playing so beautifully, i just listened quietly and didn’t even dare to look at his face because his music was that lovely. eventually i went up to him and asked him to borrow music and the rest is history.

There was a story on NY1 today about an annual Dumpling eating contest this year!

Last year’s winner ate 66 dumplings in 2 minutes:
http://www.twinmarquis.com/chefone/contest_poster.html

I don’t remember the exact number for this year’s winner - I think it was 61. So 30 dumplings would have been no small feat!!
