Suit Up!

October 23rd, 2009 @ 2:49 pm by Miss French Fries

Barney: Lesson one, lose the goatee. It doesn’t go with your suit.
Ted: I don’t have a suit.
Barney: Lesson two, get a suit. Suits are cool.

- How I Met Your Mother

I couldn’t agree with Barney more. When Mr. French Fries and I were talking about what the Fry Guys would wear for the wedding, we immediately started talking tuxes. We soon found out that while tuxes are great for other guys (see: James Bond, Mr. Belvedere) they weren’t exactly the feel we were going for. Neither of us are a huge fan of bow ties, vests, cummerbunds, shiny lapels or shiny shoes. But! Mr. French Fries wears suits every day for work, so he’s comfortable wearing them* and I can attest that he looks great in them. There’s just something about a man in a suit (see: Chuck Bass, Mr. French Fries).

Source

*I suppose “comfortable” is a relative term… I’m not sure a necktie is exactly the epitome of comfort.

Anyway. It was decided that we would go the suit route for the wedding. The Fry Guys will be wearing black suits with black ties, and instead of boutonnieres, we’ll be doing pocket squares (much like Mr. Bass in the photo above). I think it looks classy, and is just the right amount of a pop of color for the guys. Right now, Mr. French Fries will be in a black suit / ivory tie combo (the tie will have some type of pattern so he doesn’t look like a waiter), and will be wearing a boutonniere composed of one of my bouquet blooms.

Now the question is, do they rent or do they buy? I know that renting is probably the cheaper option, but I also know that Men’s Wearhouse and Joseph A. Bank run sales periodically. Is it possible to be able to buy a suit for about the same cost as it is to rent? Would the Fry Guys get use out of buying a suit? We’re going basic black here, so it will be pretty versatile, and I know that Mr. French Fries would be able to use it on a regular basis, but what about the other Fry Guys? They might not use it very often. But then again, my bridesmaids will be buying their dresses, and they won’t be able to wear those every day, either! Any wisdom out there to share on this topic?

What will the men in your bridal party be donning on the day of the wedding?

That’s precisely the route we are planning on going. My FI has been in many a wedding, and he’s annoyed that he has to spend as much on a tux rental as bridesmaids spend on dresses and they get to keep theirs. He wants his guys to be able to get use out their wedding attire again, so we were going to wait for a sale at JosABanks and go shopping with them all.

Btw, I love the idea of a pocket square instead of a boutonnière. I’m really trying to use as much reusable, repurpose-able (is that a word? it is now) stuff in our wedding as possible.

there are many more occasions to which a guy can wear a suit to [work, interviews, other weddings!] so if it’s the same price wise, why not have them buy it?

i’m thinking we’ll go with suits since we’re working with a somewhat casual feel for our wedding. unless he decides he wants something fancier. but i doubt that!

oooh…thanks SOO much for posting on this. FH & I are presently discussing & debating this exact topic! I like the suit idea - maybe gray instead of black, since it’s a daytime wedding. FH argues that he & the boys don’t need jackets - too hot & it’s informal; but I’m worried it’s too informal.

Basically, I’m really looking forward to the responses you get!

By the way, LOVE HIMYM!! FH & I watch it religiously every Monday! (Gossip Girl is my guilty pleasure & Chuck Bass is quite pleasing ;))

I got married on 10/3 and we went the suit route and I would totally recommend it! We bought ours through Men’s Wearhouse and they were regularly $400 and on sale for $200. All the guys were totally cool with it… a few guys wear suits for work and the others said they could wear them for weddings in the future or job interviews.
Tux Rentals in our area were about $160. So to compensate for the difference in cost, we bought their shirt and tie. We let them decide on their own shoes, but several bought the same pair that were on sale at the time.
Our guests all complemented on how nice the guys looked and it was nice to not see everyone so “matchy-matchy”

I am also going the suit route. I came across gorgeous grey Chaps suits at Kohl’s of all places. I bought 5 right there on the spot. They were $300 suits and with their never-ending sales and an additional % off coupon I got each suit for $110. I just kept exchanging the sizes until I got them right and I know the guys will be happy since the last wedding they were all in, tux rentals were almost $200. I figure that even if they don’t want/need the suit after the wedding they can sell it and get some of their money back. It is a little more complicated but I think it’s worth it.

Love the suit idea. My only fear would be that black suits aren’t as versatile as a blue or gray suit. A lot of men only want to wear them to weddings/ funerals.

My FI is going w/ a 3 piece suit… he wears a suit to work everyday, yet a tux is too formal for our wedding. A 3 piece suit isn’t something he currently owns so in our eyes its a little more special :)

I really want to go the suit route too, but I have some worries:

1) Can we rent them? — Men’s Warehouse doesn’t rent suits. Do other places?

2) The Expense — Yes, you CAN find a suit for the price of renting one, BUT the rental usually comes with the full package jacket, pants, shirt, tie, shoes, cuff links, etc. Is this too much to expect guys to buy? (FYI, my maids are picking their own black cocktail dresses)

3) Hassle — Our guys are all scattered, and coordinating their suit purchases seems like a daunting task.

Any advice on these?

As of right now, and this has changed before and probably will again, we’re thinking that my FI will don a tux and his boys will be in gray suits with matching shirt and tie (color TBD). Menswear baffles me, but I know FI really wants to wear a tux. I wish I could get him on the three-piece suit bandwagon instead, but it’s his wedding too I suppose… sigh.

My hubby and his groomsmen bought theirs. We worked with S&K before they went out of business and had suits shipped from all over the country. We got the sizes, paid for the suits, and had the guys pay us back. The suits were on clearance (kenneth cole, very nice) and under $100. The guys provided their own white shirt and shoes. We provided socks and ties as the gift.

I can’t wait to see Mr. Rainbow in his “groom suit”! It’s made it so much easier now that we don’t have a wedding party! He can wear whatever combo he wants & we don’t have to worry about matching coordinating it with his gms!

OK, I can’t believe you just reference Barney and Chuck Bass in the same post! I love both of them!!
At any rate, I’d suggest Mr. FF buying his suit and letting the groomsmen choose what to do: wear something they have, rent, or buy.

We really wanted to do suits, but with all of the men scattered across the country, it just seemed too difficult and potentially $$$ to buy suits. 3 out of the 4 groomsmen don’t wear suits to work and although I didn’t see it as a big deal, Mr. Mojito didn’t feel comfortable making the guys buy suits. So…Mr. Mojito is looking for the most non-tux like option at Men’s Warehouse. Really wanted to do suits though :-( . Here’s hoping for the best!

ahh-I love How I Met Your Mother! :) I think if everyone will use the suit again, you should go the buying route. Otherwise, rent them.

I was thinking suit, but my boy toy wears one to work everyday and says that 1) he does not want to feel like he’s going to work at the wedding and 2) he does not want to wear his “wedding outfit” to work later. hah!

I read something funny: We all know that a girl wants to feel like a princess on her wedding day, but did you know your guy wants to feel like James Bond?

It cracked me up! I read it to FI and he says it’s true… he wants to feel like Bond and is going with the tux.

We’ll see…

Since we’re aiming for a really relaxed feel, my groom and his best man will be wearing dress pants, dress shirts, and ties. (So a suit, without the jacket or vest.)

: ) My fiance wears this all the time anyways, and was sort of itching to go for the full-on suit or tux, but I told him I didn’t want him looking too much more gussied-up than me! : D

We’re also going the suit route. We’re planning on going through Amazon and trying to find suits that cost about the same as renting here. I don’t think they definitely have to be able to wear it again. After all, most bridesmaid dresses aren’t rewearable. And if they won’t wear their suit again they can always sell it and get some of their money back like some bridesmaids do with their dresses.

Loverboy will be wearing a suit - I think buying suits is a great option for the groomsmen, seriously! It’s just around the same price to rent one and in the end - they do have something for that wedding or other event that requires a suit in the future!

We went to Men’s Wearhouse. Rentals are about $175. Mr. MB’s parents bought them the suits as a gift and the guys are paying for alterations, shirt, tie and if they don’t have brown shoes they have to get those. The suits were a buy 1 get 1 free deal, so ended up being about $150 each. We picked out $20 ties and $60 shirts. The alterations are where it gets tricky. If they just need their pants hemmed it’s $10, but with less expensive suits they probably need more like $50 worth of alterations.

I’m literally salivating at work.. Nobody wears a suit better than Chuck Bass.. I’ve tried to tell my FI that he need to wear a suit like one of Mr. Bass’s to our wedding. I think he might actually go for it;)

Last night we told his parents that we were going the suit route - and that pre-Thanksgiving (when everyone is in town) would be a great time to go get those suits. His dad wasn’t having any of it (he’d be happy showing up in shorts and a Hawaiian shirt) and his mom couldn’t get over that we weren’t having tuxs. Not sure how this one will pan out, but I know that we’re doing the suit thing, regardless. And I also know that his dad needs to buy or rent a suit for the wedding, because he doesn’t own one now. It will be an interesting Thanksgiving shopping trip!!!

Loooove How I Met Your Mother! My Mr. Def wants to buy his suit but I’m just unsure of the quality that a suit for the rental price would have. And we think dress shopping is hard!
