Filling Our Love Letter Box

October 24th, 2009 @ 1:55 pm by Mrs. Labrador

I’ve finally found a wine to put in our love letter box! It took months of research but it’s finally on its way!

The reason it was so hard to find a suitable wine was because I had so many criteria:

  • It has to age well. We don’t plan on cracking this thing open for a while! But we did agree that we would open it on our 15th anniversary so it won’t spoil. We would then replace it with a wine from our wedding year and close up the box again without reading the love letters.
  • It has to be from either 2009 (the year we marry) or 2005 (the year we met).
  • It has to be light and fruity because Mr. Lab isn’t much of a wine drinker and that’s all he likes.
  • It has to have a pretty bottle. Naturally. :)
  • It has to be relatively inexpensive.
  • It has to be highly rated to ensure quality and taste.
  • It has to be from Europe (I added this one late because it’s our dream honeymoon location).

So what did we end up with? I can’t even pronounce it! It’s a *deep breath* 2005 Perrin Chateauneuf du Pape Les Sinards Rhone Red Blends from Chateauneuf du Pape, France-Rhone. *whew*

Source

Basically, it’s a red, fruity wine from France that meets all of our criteria.

I bought it from Wine.com for $38.99. I was sold after reading a couple of its reviews and the wine maker’s notes:

“Perrin Chateauneuf du Pape Les Sinards is made from the traditional varieties of Chateauneuf du Pape from Chateau de Beaucastel’s own vineyard and from other top quality growers in the appellation. Predominately Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvedre, the wine is rich and silky with a deep red color. With the gamy, earthy quality that Beacastel is know for, Les Sinards is long on the palate with rounded tannins.”

Yum, yum, and yum!

I just hope the slight wine lush in me doesn’t break into this thing just to try it out! I’ll have to remember to keep the house stocked with wine so I’m not tempted.

I had to have it shipped to our best man’s house in South Carolina since Wine.com doesn’t ship to Georgia. I also ran into this problem when ordering our bridal party wine and champagne for when we are getting ready. All that is left to do now is write our love letters and put an appropriate quote on the box! We’re writing our letters after we get our marriage license next week (we’ve already attempted this once but had a minor fail. More later!).

Are you putting away anything from your wedding day to open/share in the future? What is it?

The wine sounds perfect! Good idea to drink it in 15 years to ensure that you’ll actually get to try it at some point!!

What a cute idea! I’ve never heard of doing that before. That bottle is very pretty! Maybe you could keep the bottle as a vase when you do open it later on!

Very very cool. I love the love letter box idea - and am so glad to see you found a delicious wine for it - and 15 years seems an appropriate time to celebrate and drink some!

Why doesn’t wine.com ship to GA?!

@ASDJD: SO JEALOUS! That would be awesome if we could do that one day!

@HarleyQuinn: Definitely!

@jmc: I think it has to do with the winery itself. Some places ship alcohol to GA and others don’t. Just depends on where the wine is coming from. It’s stupid to me because I obviously found a loop hole. :)

French wines are delightful- I never liked red wine until I visited France and was properly introduced to Rhone wines. They have a tendancy to be very smooth and balanced- you made a great choice!

I have had this wine before! completely random and I only remember it because my friend who is a big wino (as in knows a lot about it where I am just a wino who knows nothing but likes to drink a lot) told me how to pronounce the name and I kept saying it over and over again. And I think its such a good idea to write the love letters. so sweet :)

Yum, we haven’t come up with anything for us to crack open at a later date. This sounds lovely though.

This is my all time favorite wine! Surprisingly, they have it at Whole Foods for about the same price ($35). It is DELIsh. And 2005 was such a good year for French wines. Congrats on the find!

I was going to say, make sure it is a good wine that won’t go bad after that long. A lot of wines will :)

@Miss Chick: Yay! I’m so glad it’s a fave for someone! But that makes me even more tempted to drink it! Maybe I should order another one just to drink on our first anniversary? Haha! I’m thinking I should have gotten a crappy wine so we’d be less inclined to fight and have to break open the box! lol

Miss Lab, I loved this idea so much that we ended up snagging it for our wedding and everyone loved it!

We also used a 2005 French wine - a Bordeaux, and had six nails in our box - a member of each family, our two pastors, and each of us nailed it shut.

The box came from etsy - if anyone is thinking of doing this, I can’t say enough about how great these folks were to work with!

I was going to suggest buying 15 bottles and open one on each anniversary through year 15. 2005 was a great year. You might find that writing tasting notes along with each year’s bottle is a great way to reminisce about your past year together and include that in the notes.

we bought a bottle of wine (from the year we met) in Italy on our honeymoon. Since we didn’t have a cake at our wedding to enjoy for our first anniversary, we’re popping open the Italian wine to celebrate our first year!
