About Miss Hamster

Let me just start off by saying that I’m a nervous laugher. Awkward situations? Giggle. Unexpected moments? A frenzied grin and apprehensive chortle. Some people handle life’s situations with grace and a quiet calm. I’m not one of those people.

AWKWARD01

So it came as no surprise that even after the mans presented me with the perfect proposal (private, at home, no JumboTron involved) and I had practiced my response in my head ever since we began our ever-exciting engagement ring discussions, my first reaction was… a surprised guffaw in his face.

What happened to my planned tears, my emotional, “Yes, a thousand times yes!”? Nowhere to be found. Fortunately, Mr. Hammy was accustomed to my laughing at the most inopportune times and didn’t take it personally. I quickly recovered and gave the response I had wanted to make all along – a resounding “Yes!” Phew! Saved that one! Coming soon – the proposal story!

When your SO proposed, did your reaction surprise you?

I’m a nervous laugher too!

The instant he proposed, I swear must have blacked out from sheer excitement, because I barely remember a thing. I remember blubber-crying-squawking-squealing and saying “Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou” and “Iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou” over and over again. After I regained consciousness, I remember asking if I’d actually said yes. :p (Apparently I did. lol)

It really surprised me because I knew it was coming! I thought I’d be a cool cucumber. :)

Oh, that’s ok. I’m pretty sure I was so overwhelmed from being surprised (for once) that I hit him, mumbled something not nice and then proceeded to blubber. He had to ask if that was a “yes”.

I went into major freak-out mode since it was a total surprise. I never thought I would be one of those girls who cried when they got proposed to, but I turned out to be, go figure! I think the both of us were surprised by the tears and the repeated “Are you serious??!?!?”

I could’ve caught flies in my mouth when he proposed to me. He had to snap fingers in front of my face and say “This is the part where you say yes if you’re going to say yes.” I went into complete shock. I wish I would’ve laughed. At least he would’ve known I was still alive that way. ;-)

Um, I said, “What? Are you SERIOUS?!??!!” and then laughter. and he said “um…still waiting on that yes….ok my knee is hurting” lol. So not how it was planned, but makes a good story now!

I had no idea how I’d react…but sort of thought I knew when he’d ask so had mentally prepared for it. Of course my fiance caught me completely off-guard in a restaurant and my response was a shrill “what are you doing?!” when he got down on one knee (um yeah I’m slow, I didn’t even get it then) and then when he asked my response was a shrieking harpy “OHMAHGAAAH” I am not a shrieker…ok well I wasn’t till then….and then I CRIED. My poor fiance was like “ummm…so I take it this is a yes?” All of those emotions/reactions surprised me. It’s kinda funny now though :)

I totally just started sobbing (unattractive sobs, not cute little tears running down my face, whole body heaving, can’t speak kind of sobbing) but he and I definitely expected that since I have been known to cry at commercials and sometimes just from my own thoughts…

I have a tendency to do the inappropriate laugh, so I know what you mean. :) Can’t wait to hear the story!

I am a terrible nervous laugher. And to make matters worse - I close my eyes when I talk to someone and I’m nervous. Not even trying to imagine this on wedding day!!!

I walked into the house with roses and rose petals strewn everywhere and a path of roses into the bedroom. When I opened the bedroom door he was in a circle of roses on one knee and I just stood there staring at him for a good two to three minutes or so and then muttered, “Are you serious?”. I bum rushed him and drowned him in kisses and hugs but he had to remind me that I still didn’t give him an answer. I shrieked ‘YES!’ and then gave him more kisses and looked at him again and was like ‘Seriously?!’ We had talked about it, but he had thrown me off a few times before with impromptu romantic dinners and gifts so he completely surprised me!

Lol - I’m glad to know that I wasn’t the only one who probably freaked out the FH with their response. In movies, the girl always responds so predictably!

I wouldn’t let him propose - i kept saying, “i want to take my contacts off. why are you kneeling? are you sick?”

he was halfway through his little speech before i realized what was happening, and began to blubber.

I never rehearsed it because I didn’t see it coming (we were born sworn commitment phobes, oops), and just went “Are you serious?!” x 3 and then “You’re not kidding, right?!”

I love your “Pride and Prejudice” reference. :-)

No tears here, I was embarrassed, actually! I hate being in the spotlight and my hubby proposed in union square, SF. :)

LOL! I’m also a nervous laugher, but I think in response to my proposal I uttered rather loudly a few less-than-classy curse words. With a huge smile on my face, of course ;)

I suspected that the proposal was coming, but not at that particular moment. We were out at Lake Michigan and I was talking about this little lake that you can see from the Bluffs and how yucky and scummy it gets in the summer. I turned around, and sure enough, he was down on one knee! Actually he teases me because I never said yes. I just kept saying “Oh my God!” over and over again!

oh yeah, my reaction surprised me! First, I didn’t expect to be surprised and I was. Then I thought I would do one of those shouted, triumphant “YES”’s and squeal. instead I was half sobbing half laughing shaking and the “yes” turned into “of course I will, silly”.
Oh well. :-)

@Jessie516- I had the same response! I kept saying “oh my gosh, oh my gosh” it was such a shock that I had no other words! When I finally did say yes he just stayed there and I had to say it louder, “YES, I’LL MARRY YOU!” He was so nervous, and I was clueless about any of it! Haha!
