About Miss Trail Mix

Let’s Start at the Very Beginning…

October 27th, 2009 @ 11:29 am by Miss Trail Mix

… A very good place to start! (Props if you recognize that “song from a movie” quote :)…

Anyways, I felt I should introduce myself and the mister a little bit more.

Our “how we met” story is actually kind of cute (as most of them are): We both lived in this tiny dorm freshman year, way out on the edge of campus with only about 30 freshman total in it. He was on the varsity football team and I played for the women’s soccer team and then we were both awarded a conference “Rookie of the Week” honor the same week! And the rest, my friends, is history…

He says he had a crush on me from the beginning; I just thought we were good friends. We didn’t actually start dating until November of senior year but once we got together, we never looked back and deep down, I always knew this is where we would end up. Here’s a picture of us from college, way back in the day:

(Personal Photo)

This was taken during senior week, our last week of college before graduation. I remember it was the first time he (very drunkenly) told me he would “never not love me.” After I worked out the double negative there, I was touched. And officially head over heels.

After we graduated, we moved down to Miami, where Mr Trail Mix grew up. After a rough start (car broken into, lost a job), I finally found an apartment and a job at a running store, all the while cultivating a love for University of Miami football and a raw bar with great happy hour specials in Miami’s Coconut Grove called Monty’s. Here’s a (terrible) picture of us there:

(Personal Photo)

One year living in south Florida’s humid, tropical weather was enough for me (and 3 hurricanes in 2 months didn’t help either… do you remember Katrina, Rita and Wilma? I do, because Miami was dominated by all 3 of them.)

So in spite of my sadness at leaving my boy, I picked up and moved to Ithaca, NY to start a master’s program in Exercise and Sport Science. 2 years later, we were still doing the long-distance thing: 1 weekend a month flying from either upstate New York or Miami to see each other. Then, finally, Mr Trail Mix was accepted into business school in New York City and we’ve been living in our shoebox apartment ever since.

While our two years of being in a long-distance relationship weren’t easy, our relationship is stronger because of it. We appreciate being in each other’s company so much more and know better than to take one another’s presence for granted. Our communication skills have also greatly improved.

So here we are, living in a teeny tiny studio in Manhattan (and I do mean tiny… 300 square feet doesn’t go very far), engaged and enjoying life. We’ve been through a lot together, we’ve grown up in many ways together and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What’s your “how we met” story?

Awww! We met at the beginning of college, too… and started dating towards the end of my junior year. We’ve never been a long-distance relationship, but both have busy schedules and he travels a lot, so I can definitely empathize. I’m glad you guys made it work.

Cute! We’ve got quite a few similarities. My FI and I fell in love in undergrad too. Then we did LD for two years while he was in Miami. And now we’re both up in NY (Ithaca!) for law school and planning a wedding in Ithaca. Small world! Can’t wait to see more about your wedding. :)

Oops sorry, got too excited there. I don’t actually like Ithaca that much. :-P haha. But I spent two years there for my masters too and my fiance is still stuck there. But I’m beginning to realize it’s a SMALL TOWN that A LOT of people venture through in life. :)

Monty’s and Hurricane football! You just brought a smile to my face. We technically met at “The U”, but our love blossomed on the running path. :o)

Did you work at FootWorks?

What a cool story! Love the double negative … Loverboy is like that often when drunk, too - it’s hillarious because I look at him before I giggle when I realize he’s being cute!

I understand the distance relationship thing. We’ve done Japan-Colorado, Colorado-Nevada and are about to be done with California-Oregon, he’ll be moving in with me when he graduates in December.

I’m so glad most of you know that quote!

Also glad to hear of more upstate readers, can I get a holla for upstate?

@saranightly, I’m from outside of Albany, near the MA border.

@Yorkie, nope, worked at their rival, The Runners High, you should check it out the next time you need new sneakers!

Ah 2005. I do remember those 3 hurricanes. That was the first 2 months that I lived in Miami (and consequently met my future hubby). As you can see by my avatar, I have a love of UM football (and Monty’s….the painkillers are delish!).

I love the Runner’s High! I was just there for the Asics sale.

I’m still here in Miami though. I’ll have to go to Monty’s and raise a glass to you and Ms. Yorkie! :)

I enjoyed reading your blog, Miss Trail Mix ;) It is always a joy for me to read of more successful long distance relationships ;) Ithaca NY is beautiful, my (was~long distance love) /hubby lived 45 mins from there in our first 4 years together, and recently moved to IL :) I’m originally from Canada, and he was from Texas! We first met online and connected as international penpals - became best friends, love blossomed and after much testing through 3 deployments, etc we finally were able to be together! :) Now, skip ahead its actually ~10 yrs best friends and 5 yrs loving life as husband and wife! :) I wish you so much luv and blessings on your love journey! xx ~Jen
