Miss Pretzel's Picture
Miss Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I was born and raised in New Hampshire, went to undergrad and grad school at Purdue University in Indiana, had my career take me to Wisconsin, Atlanta, and then finally settled in Seattle. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. We love Chuck Taylor All Stars, holding hands, clever t-shirts, bacon, KEXP Radio, craft beer, buying local, cooking from scratch, gardening, mastering our new Gocco, and of course, each other. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
About Miss Pretzel

I Said Yes!

October 28th, 2009 @ 2:37 pm by Miss Pretzel

Perfection!

So, Mr Pretzel and I had a trip to New England planned since this past spring. I grew up in NH and most of my mom’s family is in Maine or Massachusetts, so this was our “meet the rest of the family” trip. My mom made the trip with us—making it even more special. My heart was set on being engaged for this trip, so we could celebrate our engagement with my family. As the days ticked by and our trip got closer, I got more and more stressed out. Had he bought the ring? Was he going to propose?

Mr Pretzel is very very good at keeping secrets and it drove me crazy! I was almost certain that he had bought the ring. However, as we arrived at the airport on the day we left, Mr. Pretzel said some things that made me doubt that he had bought it. I almost frisked him. Okay, I did frisk him, right there in the Southwest check-in line. Nothing, not a bump to indicate a box. I tried really hard not to be too upset, but my emotions got the best of me. In Chicago when I confided and told Mr Pretzel that I was upset and a little mad at him, he couldn’t keep from smiling (which with an emotional woman isn’t the best reaction!) and finally he told me that if I knew what he knew I would smile, too.

After arriving on the East Coast, we had a great dinner with my aunt, uncle, cousin and mom. They were giving me a hard time, trying to find out the wedding date (it was already set, but Mr Pretzel and I agreed not to tell anyone until he had proposed). Knowing that I was super emotional, Mr Pretzel decided to be nice and he took a “Tiffany Blue” pouch out of his shoe. Yes—in order to hide it from me, he put it in the iPod compartment in his Nike running shoes.

I thought it was strange that he was wearing these shoes which he usually only wears to the gym. I bet the scanner guy at the airport smiled when he saw my ring go through x-ray!

Back to the story—so he held up a Tiffany pouch, and my hands flew up to my face!

“Oh my God!”’

I grabbed his face and pulled him towards me for a kiss—before he even got the words out. “Miss Pretzel, will you marry me?”

YES! Yes! Please note—I had not even looked at the ring yet. I couldn’t take my eyes off of his face. I kissed him again and finally took a peek at the ring! It is perfect. The classic Tiffany setting. Just under a half carat—I made him promise to keep it under a half carat because anything bigger would look ridiculous on my size four finger!

My family felt so honored to be there for that momentous occasion. I was thankful, too—especially because as soon as the ring came out, my Aunt said to my Uncle, “Get the camera!”

We are so lucky to have these wonderful photos of the whole event.

YES!

YES!

Did you suspect an impending proposal, only to get thrown off the trail? What did your fiance do to keep your engagement a secret?

How cute! My fiance “accidentally” got separated from me when we were going through security on the trip where we got engaged just in case the ring set off the security sensors. I didn’t realize a thing!

So sweet, I teared up a little bit reading this, it was so thoughtful of him to wait to do it until you were with your family!

Now that’s a surprise! He gets major points for knowing that you were going to frisk him and keeping it hidden all the same.

What a great story. Sounds like mine.

We had bought the ring at an antique jewelry sale so I knew he had it (which made it that much harder). I am terrible at surprises. I want to hand out Christmas presents as soon as I buy them. We had a trip to Paris planned for a few months once he got the ring. My mom and brother were going so I figured he would do it then. A couple days before we left he sat me down and told me that he didn’t want to upset me but he didn’t feel safe taking the ring across the pond. I told him I understoon (secretly sulking). He promised to do it soon after we got back and to make it really romantic! He even made a big show of taking the ring box (sans ring) to his office to lock in the safe while we are gone. Everyone kept saying that he was going to do it in Paris and I said, no, we had already talked about it.

In the airport he kept holding onto this little bag they give you with Bose earphones. I offered to put it in my bag but he refused. He told me he had put our exchanged euro in that bag and he didn’t want me to lose it (I have a penchant for losing important things like tickets, money, ID, etc). So I didn’t think twice when he put that same bag in the hotel safe and visited it twice a day to get money out and put it back. Little did I know he was getting the ring out and putting it back.

When he did go down on one knee I was INCREDIBLY surprised! I even have pictures as evidence of my surprise!

@bellenga: Actually, I was a little dense… he said “why can’t we tell them the date” and was holding the bag almost in front of my face. I didn’t even notice it! He had to wave it in front of my face a second time with more emphasis! Then it finally registered and i almost fell out of my chair. lol… call me observant!

OMG YES! We were at an aquarium, celebrating our 3.5 year anniversary (of dating, of course), and I was sure it was going to happen then! But we made it all the way through the aquarium without any proposals. I knew he had already bought the ring, and I had all but convinced myself that I was going to have to wait until the holidays or something. Just as we were about to drive out of the parking lot, he said “wait, I have something for you,” and pulled my ring out of his pocket! :D

@froggy518: I am certain Mr P would approve of your guy’s tactics.
Being surprised is def. worth the minor emotional roller coaster it puts us through, especially if we know that they already have the ring.

CONGRATS!!! I have the SAME gorgeous, breath-taking ring!!! My fiance and I traveled from LA to Chicago to London to Paris with it hidden in his camera bag. Luckily, he still had it the night we finally reached the Eiffel Tower, site of the proposal! It was amazing. We sure are a pair of lucky gals to have such awesome guys!!!

@RecessionistaBride: Not as smart as it sounds. Miss Pretzel failed to mention that I walked around for 3 days w/ the rock in my shoe. It was not comfortable. Still worth it though.

I was suspicious that a proposal was coming on a particular weekend, but The Guy said some things that totally threw me off and I - like you - was absolutely devastated, disappointed and a little angry!

Turns out I was reading too much into the whole thing and the proposal did happen and was even better than I could have imagined.

I couldn’t figure out why The Guy was so very obsessed with double and triple-checking that the car was locked that day. Turns out he had the ring stashed in his gym bag in the trunk and was totally paranoid about it…understandably!
