Mrs. Perfume's Picture
Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.
About Mrs. Perfume

Notice I used the word “gathering”. It wasn’t a party. There were no themes, plastic phalluses, matching tank tops with sparkly wordz, games, and most of all, no plans. There was no time. On the Saturday before the wedding, there was so much to do, including that dance lesson and baking the last batch of macarons.

I was a little sad earlier in the week when I thought that I would miss this rite of passage (though I never envisioned a traditional bachelorette party). No one was really game, and plus we already had the couple’s pre-wedding non-shower party and my bridal shower.

But last minute, my sister came down from New York, and a few friends who happened to be around rallied.

all+the

I just wanted something low-key, to eat my favorite foods, relax, and enjoy a casual farewell to single-hood (and to some extent the activities of my youth?) celebration. This is what you call an old lady’s bachelorette party.

IMG_54201

It started off at my favorite neighborhood eatery, Hank’s Oyster Bar, with my sister and friend, Andrea.

IMG_54301

Eileen came to join us as we sat down for a light dinner on the patio.

IMG_54302

My favorite food in the world is fries… and oysters… and Champagne. The combination is amazing. I wouldn’t typically indulge in this (combo). And a week before the wedding — it could have been a bad situation. But we were celebrating, so I took the risk.

IMG_54401IMG_54402

It was such a beautiful evening. We decided to go to Adams Morgan to have drinks on the rooftop of Perry’s, one of my favorite bars.

IMG_54704

Michelle joined us at that point.

IMG_54503

And we enjoyed some sparkling blanc de noir…

4685_78

The gentlemen there found our “bachelorette” party amusing.

IMG_54504

One young man–we’ll call him, Vince (because he looked and sounded like a young Vince Vaughn)– was very entertaining! He regaled us with stories of the Midwest and his hard-living ways. See demonstration below.

IMG_54505

IMG_54602

He hung around for a little while, and when someone asked, “What are you, into Asian chicks or something?” He held up his Sapporo and said, “Who IIIIIISN’T?!” Oh, boy… but I honestly think this little Irishman did not actually have the Fever. He was just indulging a bunch of cougars.

IMG_54804

The ladies went home around 1AM and left my sister and me to fend for ourselves. Don’t ask me what she’s doing. I have no idea.

IMG_54805

My last indulgence was a late night jumbo slice. I hadn’t done that in YEARS.

IMG_54806

It was so gross!

The next morning my sister left, sans hangover, and gave me a rehearsal bouquet she made out of the tissue and ribbon from the bridal shower. Perfect.

IMG_54903

Au revoir bachelorette-dom!!!

Ummm that looks like it was so much fun. Right up my alley! I just recently discovered oysters after spending a lifetime being afraid of them!

Looks like fun! I love Perry’s. Have you tried their white sangria? It has something magical in it.

Looks like fun! I wanted a more low-key evening, but my gals through me the more typical bachelorette. I played along and ended up having a great time. I really think it doesn’t matter so much what you do, but who is there to share in your departure from singlehood.

I LITERALLY just came back from my first real trip to DC and guess what I did on Saturday night? Had sushi and wine at Perry’s on the roof deck, it’s so gorgeous! So excited that I recognized it :)
You are also gorgeous and this sounds like a fab bacheloretty soiree…

Sounds like a great way to bid farewell to singledom! After two years of using our neighbor’s professional oyster shucker/stone crab cracker (together with them of course!), we got it as a gift from them for our wedding. That thing is magical. My husband said it was the first gift that was actually for HIM! I highly recommend it - it’s pricey but makes oyster shucking a BREEZE!

I’m with you on the positives of the old-ladyish bachelorette party. We knew we were old when, at around 10:30 on the night of my bachelorette, we were debating whether it was too “late” to go out to another bar. LOL.

I had my bach party in Adams Morgan as well, and as low key as we tried to keep in (no pink or black or sparkly anything, just like you) somehow the sketchy guys still managed to figure it out…it’s like a sixth sense for them maybe? And I definitely ended the night with Jumbo Slice…ew! Although I remember it tasting amazing at the time.

This is why I dont want a party with my girls…I just want a day at the spa or something. Plus I dont drink and my two bridesmaids are 14 and 12! But I just dont understand why random guys think its ok to get in on your party…for me thats not cool.

I just went through your entire wedding blog, and read each posting! I have to say that I loved how you incoporated your favorite things into the wedding details (macaroons, table cards..) I have to ask though, what is in your make up bag? You have such awesome just simple make up in each picture. (you’re very pretty!)

@chicagom: Banana from three years ago!

@KMSull: @beexiong: @fiftyfootbride: Blush!

@Mary: Thanks for reading through all the posts! Re: make-up bag: Mac Studio Fix powder base; Revlon Cream blush in Berry Flirtatious (blended over with a light pink powder blush); (I have brown eyes, so I try to compliment them with plums and purple eyeshadows–though they don’t read as purple-y) Mac Shadowy Lady; I try to keep my lips natural with lip balm or Chanel Lip Glossimer in Coral Reef. Hope that helps!

@Jessie516: I really do love pizza, though!
