Mascara Alternative: Dyed Lashes

October 28th, 2009 @ 1:35 pm by Mrs. Beagle

Yay, I’m married! (Okay, now that I’ve got that out of my system…) :)

On Saturday, after my hair was set and my makeup was being prepped, I voiced my concern about mascara to my stylist. The problem is that I already have long, thick lashes and, therefore, I don’t wear mascara often. Because of this, It feels weird when I have it on and I think it makes my eyes look odd. That’s when my stylist told me she should have suggested making an appointment to have my lashes dyed. Although it wouldn’t make them longer or thicker, she said it would make them darker.

I, being naive about makeup and most beauty products in general, had never heard of this and now I am intrigued. I did some brief research on the topic via a Google search and found out you can also buy dye if you want to do it at home. I am not that brave and would definitely have someone do it for me, at least the first time. The only problem I see with this is that it’s dye, which means I can’t just take it off (like I can with mascara) if I don’t like it. Also, I am a little concerned about having chemicals that close to my eyeballs.

Since Mr. Beagle and I are planning to do another photo shoot in our nice clothes… or at least with me in my dress, I think it’s the perfect excuse to do a little lash experimentation. So my question is: Have you ever dyed your lashes or brows? What was your experience with it? Would you recommend it? Did you have any bad side effects? Do you have any other mascara alternatives?

I used to do this every month — for years! Now only on occasion, cause I don’t live in NYC anymore. It’s totally safe, no problems whatsoever. Just definitely don’t do it at home. It would be nearly impossible to keep your eyes calmly closed with this stuff on your lashes. In fact, i think it would LITERALLY be impossible to apply to one closed eye with another eye open…. Just go to a salon that’s done it a lot, and it’s great!

I say go for it! There are also lash-tint products that are similar to mascara, but very very light. They simply coat your lashes vs. putting gunk on top of them.

Good luck! PS- bold lashes are always worth it. :)

I had it done at a salon last month. It was an interesting experience. I have very light lashes and it was recommended to me by an esthetician to have them died for the honeymoon so I wouldn’t have to use mascara. Find a salon that uses vegetable based dye so when it gets in your eye (and it will) there will be no harm. Since you have long and thick lashes I think your results will be great! Definitely worth a try!

I am a bit scared with this since I am just like you. I do not use makeup much often. My work is at home so I do not go out much. But if you are really interested to dye you lashes, then do not do it yourself. Go to a salon that knows what they are doing. It is better to let the experts deal with sensitive cases such as this.

My FSIL has literally white eyelashes. She dyes them and has never had a problem. I say go for it and document the before/after for us to see!!

I see people getting it done at Benefit all the time… it looks like it’s no problem! I would DEFINITELY not try it at home!

As a natural blonde, pretend redhead, I dye my eyebrows ALL THE TIME, and have definitely had my lashes done on occasion. I LOVE IT and would have both done all the time if my schedule/bank account allowed. Go for it, it’s fabulous!

Every time I get my eyebrows waxed I also get them tinted. My eyebrows (and eyelashes) are blond and my natural hair color is a bit darker (dirty blond), so my face looks better if my brows are a bit darker. I tried the lash tint once and it was terrible. Your can’t open your eyes while the tint is on your lashes and she wanted to leave mine on for 10 minutes. Believe it or not, this is difficult! Even though I did keep my eyes closed, the tint still creeped in and stuck soooo bad. After all of that, I didn’t even really see a difference. I still wanted to wear mascara most of the time and I didn’t see the point.

I’ve heard of this, but never tried it! If done professionally, I think there would be no problem…but yeah, I don’t think I’d have the guts to try it myself.

DO IT!!! I wear mascara but I also dye my eyelashes. It’s completely safe if done by someone who knows what he/she is doing. It’s especially great because when you are swimming and after you wash your face at night, you still feel sexy!

I’ve never done it myself, but my friend who is a hairstylist does it all the time. She says that the process is pretty easy/painless so it might be worthwhile.

I do mine at home about one a month and I haven’t had any problems. I just do one eye at a time. I have thick long lashes that are blond at the ends, they also tend to leave mascara smudges all over so it works perfectly for me.

I have really long and thick lashes too, but I’ve never heard of this before! It sounds like a really good idea.

I’ve dyed my eyelashes for a long time because I can’t be bothered dealing with mascara getting everywhere and smudging. I love waking up in the morning and already looking like I am cared for.

We dyed my eyelashes for the wedding and it turned out great! No worries about crying or smudging, and it lasted for weeks afterwards. If you get a home kit, have someone else dye your lashes for you. The kits are easy to use; just keep your eyes closed and rinse your eyes well before you open them. Once you have been to a salon and experienced the process, it’s not scary at all.

Never done it, but I wore the little falsies for my wedding day. I loved how they looked! Not the whole strip of lashes, but the little individuals ones, just at the corners.

Do it, do it, do it! If you have long, thick lashes that are light (like me) it makes a HUGE difference! No more mascara needed. Just curl and go in the morning. AAAAAAHHHH. :) I’ve heard it called “eyelash tinting” - just another option for a google search.

I usually do the purple/blue/black. Sounds crazy, but really makes my eyes pop, yet still looks natural.

Mrs. Beagle,
Since you are lucky enough to already have long, thick lashes, it sounds as if you don’t think they are dark enough.

As others have said, lash tinting works best on light colored lashes. It is also a life saver for lashes like mine which the tips have been bleached out by the sun. Once tinted the entire length of my lashes is more noticeable and solid black. If this is your issue then go for it!

The tinting does not add any thickness to your lashes. That’s where mascara comes in, with its wonderful waxes that can really bulk your lashes up. Hope this helps!
