Miss Pretzel's Picture
Miss Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I was born and raised in New Hampshire, went to undergrad and grad school at Purdue University in Indiana, had my career take me to Wisconsin, Atlanta, and then finally settled in Seattle. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. We love Chuck Taylor All Stars, holding hands, clever t-shirts, bacon, KEXP Radio, craft beer, buying local, cooking from scratch, gardening, mastering our new Gocco, and of course, each other. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
About Miss Pretzel

2009 Aug 10_0243

… and also loved (in no particular order) Cooking, NASCAR, Football and GOOD beer. She was 29, her mom lived with her, she was a knitter and she had two cats (one more cat would’ve sealed her single-ness for good!). Things were not looking good for this lass. It was 2007, Miss Pretzel had just started a new job at *HUGE* company and she also had a strict no dating people at work policy. It was pretty uneventful the first time Miss Pretzel met Mr Pretzel. She was being introduced to some of her customers on her second day of work. The conversation went like this.

Coworker: This is Mr Pretzel, he’s a boilermaker too.

Miss Pretzel: Awesome! What years?

Mr Pretzel: 1999-2004

Miss Pretzel: I was there then too. Funny.

Did you see the magic? Neither did Mr or Miss Pretzel. Fast-forward almost a whole year. Miss Pretzel turned 30, she had gotten over her no dating people at work policy and she started to hang out with some folks from work for a beer or two- and sometimes Mr Knit would join them. One particular Leap Day during Lent (Miss Pretzel is Catholic) she joined the “boys” for a beer. The table was littered with meat filled appetizers so Miss Pretzel ordered a veggie pizza. Someone passed one such appetizer her way and she politely declined saying, “No thanks, I don’t eat meat on Fridays.” Feeling she should explain more (she is normally quite the carnivore) she looked at the person sitting across from her, Mr Pretzel, and said, “You know, I’m Catholic”. He smiled and said, “I know, I’ve seen you at church with some old woman.” Miss Pretzel was surprised, as she had never noticed Mr Pretzel at church. With some discussion she learned he was a member at the Church her mother attended. (Yes, the “old” woman was Mama Pretzel—in Mama Pretzel’s defense she is not a “old” woman and in Mr Pretzel’s defense he thought it was her Mom, but chickened out at the last minute and said “old woman” instead.)

Sparks did fly that night. Mr Pretzel said, “I saw my stock increase instantly when you found out I was Catholic.” Miss Pretzel admits finding out that the fact that they shared the same faith did open her mind to dating this co-worker. That week, Miss Pretzel and Mr Pretzel started to converse on the phone via text and phone calls. She invited him to a Lenten event at her church and they hung out at the local watering hole and drank lots of good beer. Soon they were meeting on Sundays for church and dinner after. The relationship blossomed from there…

Do you and your FI have a shared faith?

We are Catholics too. FI went to Catholic school K-12, and became a lapsed Catholic as an adult. Now he goes to mass with me.

That’s super sweet! I’m Catholic and Mr. FF is Lutheran…but we’re open to each other’s faith (they’re actually very similar in many respects). We alternate weekends going to church with each other, so it works for us.

Very sweet story. We’re Catholic and Presbyterian but visit each others churches or have our own thing.

Cute story! I was raised Lutheran and he was raised Assemblies of God (pretty big difference!) and now we go to a non-denominational Christian church together. We ‘met in the middle’ and both love it!

We do share the same faith, but it was kind of random…In college, I was definitely NOT looking for a Jewish boy but I somehow ended up with one…Thank goodness, too, it just makes things so much easier (and keeps the grandparents happy!)

I love your “how we met” story :) Mr French Bulldog and I share a similar faith… when we met I was working with the Youth Group at my church. He said that my involvement upped my stock and they fact that he would come and help me out sometimes upped his ;-)

@holamiis: I thought about it, but I have so many DIY projects and a “huge” knitting project (an “lovers knot” throw blanket) for my FBIL and his fiance to tackle. That was prolly one of the hardest decisions to make- to ban myself from knitting wedding projects.

That is a fun story! And your “stock increased”
LOL.
Faith is the only thing my fiance and I have in common - we’re both Protestant. Other than that we are different in every possible way, even race, as he is black and I’m white! Sharing the same faith is a welcome similarity considering our other differences and the issues they bring up :)

We met at church! About 7 years ago. I had just started attending, and he had gone there his whole life. We were friends in Youth Group for about 3 years before we finally started talking online more regularly and he got up the guts to ask me out. We’ve been together ever since!

He grew up catholic, and I non-denominational. Now we’re both attended a non-denominational church. We’ve had several convos about our faiths and what we want in our marriage. I believe that our faith will continue to grow together as we have a family and grow old together :)

I’m… well, technically Methodist but more independent Christian now but boy is ORDAINED (hello preacher man) in the Disciples of Christ. We share the same faith, but he’s more into the academic side than I am.

Great post! Like you and Mr. Pretzel, FI and I share our Catholic faith and had a little light bulb moment on our first date. He’s Irish and most Irish are Catholic (even if non-practicing) and I’m Irish-American and a practicing Catholic. We met online so I didn’t even know his last name and when he said it I kinda though - uh oh, not a Catholic last name… And as soon as he said what his last name was he mentioned that it was spelled differently than I assumed and followed up with ‘it’s the Catholic spelling’. And in my brain I went WOO HOO! It’s a big part of our relationship and I’m so happy I found someone who not only shares the same Faith but who practices it as well. :0)

The Guy and I are both Catholic as well…in name only though.

For personal reasons neither of us feels a connection to the Church anymore, so we’re getting married in a Protestant church (The Guy’s mum is heartbroken). So yes, we share a faith, and we also share a feeling of distance from that faith.

But most importantly, we are on the same page in terms of values and beliefs, regardless of whether or not we practice a specific type of religion.
