Day-After Traditions

Day-After Traditions : wedding cultural traditions Lindo6 source

In Mr. Beagle’s family, they have a tradition of gathering as a family and eating Menudo, which is a spicy soup usually served for breakfast, on the morning after the wedding. Although I’ve tried this soup, I’m not a big fan of it (it’s one of those things that you either love or hate), but Mr. Beagle loves it.

So, Sunday morning, we trekked over to my new in-laws’ house for breakfast. When we arrived, we (unfortunately) found out that the Menudo had somehow gone bad overnight, but my in-laws came through with a backup plan to serve breakfast tacos filled with potato & egg and chorizo & egg, fresh fruit, and Mexican sweet bread:

While we ate, extended relatives trickled in to join the breakfast and wish us congratulations. It was really nice conversing with Mr. Beagle’s relatives in a more relaxed atmosphere and enjoying the delicious food. I wish we could have stayed longer to visit with more of our wedding guests, but we had to leave early to take part in another tradition: visiting the elders who weren’t able to make it to our wedding.

The rest of Sunday was spent driving to and from Laredo to visit Mr. Beagle’s Abuela and Abuelo (grandmother and grandfather), who was in the hospital. We intended to visit his other grandfather who lives about an hour east of Laredo, but due to time constrictions, we weren’t able to squeeze it in.

Overall, I found it was a nice way to spend our first day as a married couple.

How did you spend the day after your wedding? Did you take part in any traditions?

That’s so nice of you two to make it out to see those who couldn’t join you. What a great way to start as a family.

tacos de chorizo!! they’re so delicious (although the combination sounds weird, i know!)

in my family, there’s also that tradition (not with menudo, but with barbacoa) but after the wedding we had to travel immediately to our honeymoon destination, so we skipped it and they got upset about it!!

Mmmm, now I’m hungry for some chorizo! We don’t have traditions in our family, but the day after the wedding we did have a lunch with my family, and it was great to talk about the day before :)

We had lunch at my parents house with Mr. Joey’s parents, brother, SIL and the kids. it was nice to just hang out for a little while. We spent the afternoon lounging around the hotel in the air-conditioning.

I love the tradition of visiting relatives who couldn’t make it to the wedding! I’ve never heard of that before, and it’s so awesome!

Wow, the day after- hubs and I were racked. We did make it to the breakfast buffet with his family before they left, which was great. We then retreated to our hotel room and slept for most of the day.

The breakfast burritos sound amazing!

On Sunday mornings (after a party or other event) my friends/sisters and I have a tradition of brunch and looking at pictures from the night before! Everyone brings over there cameras/memory stick, connects them to the TV and we go through the pictures and laugh about the night before (Gotta love technology!)

I think the morning after our wedding, we’ll probably do the Menudo/Pozole thing (or leftovers from the wedding) and go through all of our pictures… it’s always fun to hear different people’s stories or see things from someone else’s point of view… with so many people and so many things going on at the wedding, this gives us a chance to see some of the things we might have missed!

What sweet traditions! Our family doesn’t really have any traditions, but we will be doing a Sunday after luncheon for everyone, before we race home to pack for our Monday morning flight for our honeymoon.

Sounds like a lovely way to spend your first day as newlyweds. We got to relax at our house the day after our wedding while the occasional friend or family member stopped by to wish us well on our honeymoon.

the breads look interesting.

our day-after was a nightmare, unfortunately… lots of logistics, including storing his family’s ****-load of luggage in my teeny apartment while they grabbed overnighters for a 4-day ‘familymoon’. (yes, the whole family vacationed with the newlyweds….)

I’m not a big fan of menudo either. FI loves it. But egg and chorizo wraps are kind of a daily thing in our house!
