Tutorial: Our Save-The-Dates

October 29th, 2009 @ 9:30 am by Miss Hamster

In my last DIY post, I showcased my very first DIY project - our save-the-dates! In this post, I’ll walk you through a step-by-step tutorial. It’s easy, I promise! :)

You will need:

  • Cardstock
  • Moo Cards
  • A printing device (printer, Gocco, etc.)
  • Adhesive foam stickies
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors

savethe05

1. Cut your cardstock into desired save-the-date size.
Or, buy the cardstock pre-cut into the size you want (score!). Make sure that the cardstock fits into your chosen envelope!

savethe06

2. Print your save-the-date text onto the cardstock.
If it’s easier on you, you might want to do this before step 1 (cutting). In my case, I used a Gocco, for which smaller sheets of cardstock worked. I could see how full sheets would be easier to run through a printer though. I used Splendid 66 font, downloaded for free from DaFont, to simulate an old typewriter – we got a lot of positive comments on it!

3. Cut notches on either side to act as “hooks” for the ribbon.
Make sure the notches are in the same spot – otherwise you will have some crooked ribbons.

4. Attach the Moo Cards to the cut and printed cardstock.
I ordered these awesome cards from Moo Cards.

savethe010

I ordered the mini moo size – a set of 100 cards was $20. You can upload up to 100 different images – super cool! I decided to keep things simple and upload only 2 images, hence 50 cards of each image. Adhere one sticky square to each moo card:

and then position and attach the moo cards onto the cardstock like so:

5. “Tie the knot”
I think I have a mental block against tying pretty knots. I had to redo each bow several times. Make sure you take advantage of the notches you painstakingly made in Step 3!

Voila! A finished save-the-date. Repeat to your heart’s content. :)

I hope this was helpful! If you try this tutorial, please post links to your finished product!

How are you incorporating photos into your save-the-dates?

Super cute!! I wouldn’t have thought to do the cuts on the side, but it is very important to keep the ribbon in place! So smart. :)

Those are absolutely adorable! I love the idea of using baby pictures. We decided not to put our pictures on our STD’s since we wouldn’t have e-pics before we ordered them. Instead, we have a whole gallery of us on our wedding website.

I’m totally jealous that you found a way to use Moo cards. I LOVE ‘em and really wanted to use some in our paper crafts, but couldn’t think of how! Very cool design.

So cute! Out of curiosity, did you have to add any additional postage to accomodate the bells and whistles?

Hi, we did a similar thing on this page and then tied the bow around each one and placed them into envelopes, they were wonderful! http://www.savethedatemagic.com/?sol=design&pro=postcards&did=443&dtype=n

These are so adorable. We’re having mini versions of ourselves on our STDs, I think. A la Max Wanger.

Aww, those are so sweet!!!!!!! Not overly fancy, I like that. If anyone else is going to use the notch idea, Fiskars makes a punch that might make the task a little quicker.

Where did you find the pre-cut cardstock? It’s great!

Thanks!

@Katie I think the Fiskars punch is a great idea! I made 50 of these, and punching 100 notches is probably a lot easier than cutting them!

@kjpugs: I bought the cardstock from Paper Presentation in NYC - they have an online site as well. I think Paper Source and other craft stores also have pre-cut stock!
