Bridesmaid’s Dresses, at Last!

October 30th, 2009 @ 4:55 pm by Miss Chick

I am so SO excited about this post! I’ve been thinking about bridesmaid’s dresses for longer than my own wedding dress! I’m not sure why, but there’s something about bridesmaid’s dresses that just tickle my fancy. I’ve decided on J.Crew dresses in the color “light pewter”, aka, light gray.  They will also have pink flower or bow accents (either a brooch or belt). I’m also letting my BMs choose the style of the dress. Now the problem is that I’m not sure whether I should decide on one fabric or let it be a free-for-all type of deal. Here are the dresses categorized by material:

(All images courtesy of J.Crew)

Silk Tricotine:

Sophia:

silk sophia

Hope:

Robin:

Cecilia:

Cotton Cady:

Erica:

Cotton Erica

(Erica is MOH’s favorite!)

Alexa:

Cotton Alexa

Serena:

Cotton Serena

Lydia (I have this one in chartreuse, as you can see in our engagement pictures):

cotton lydia

Sydney:

Initially, I wasn’t too hot for silk taffeta. But J.Crew’s new styles in silk taffeta are TO DIE FOR. They are so adorable!!

Silk Taffeta:

Gracen:

Silk Taff Gracen

Bow Monde (This one is my current favorite! Perhaps I should buy one for myself? Haha!):

silk taff Monde

Lorelei:

Ruffle:

silk taff ruffle

Clementine:

silk taff clementine

Phew! That was a lot of dresses.

I think in the process of posting these, I’ve discovered my favorites are in all different materials. Here are my top picks for the lovely bridesmaids:

  • Silk Tricotine Hope
  • Silk Tricotine Robin
  • Cotton Cady Erica
  • Cotton Cady Lydia
  • Silk Taffeta Gracen
  • Silk Taffeta Bow Monde
  • Silk Taffeta Ruffle

I guess I answered my own question about materials, after all. These are such difficult decisions! I can’t even begin to think about shoes yet.

How did you decide on the coordination of bridesmaid’s dresses? Color? Material? Style?

I tried giving my bm’s the freedom to choose their own as long as they reminiscent of eachother, however no one took the lead. They actually all ended up choosing the same dresses- strapless. We went through so many rounds that we finally just settled on one!

JCrew has some great dresses! Can’t wait to see what you choose.

OHWOW! I love Hope…gorgeous and the bms could definitely wear it again. J. Crew has amazing dresses…my MIL actually wore Serena in that color for our wedding.

I chose color (navy) and material (dupioni silk) and the girls could pick whatever style.

Your wedding party will look amazing! Great taste!

Oh! I would go with either the cotton dresses or the silk taffeta. I recently bought the silk tricotine sophia style for a wedding I was in, and I hated the fabric. It felt almost like polyester to me, and it wasn’t forgiving at all. It showed all my sins (and I wore a size 6).

love the mismatched material look, since they all are J.Crew they’ll all have the same feel - so fun!
Yeah Miss Chick, I love them!

If I could go back, I would have chosen grew and J.Crew for my girls! If they can get them on sale, they’re a steel too! They always have superb end of the season sales. Sign up for the emails and they’ll alert you to when they are and possibly give you discount codes!

I think letting your ‘maids pick any of the above choices (in a mix of fabrics) will make a really nice aesthetic. It’ll look a little more unplanned, in a good way, I think.

I really really love a mix of fabrics and textures in the bridesmaids dresses, I vote for letting them choose any one of these…One a side note, my girls are wearing the Silk Taffeta in Brook, and they already came in and they are soooo pretty!!!! So I’m sure yours will be gorge too!

LOVE JCrew dresses. I asked my BM to choose their own black dresses. I was thinking of picking the fabric originally, but thought it might be more interesting if they had more options. They wore different fabrics, but it still looked great.

I used to work in Bridal and the advice that I would offer is that if you let the girls do different fabrics, try to limit it to ones that photograph similarly. Some fabrics photograph differently than others and it can lead it the dresses almost looking like a different color. They are all fabulous dresses though!

All my BM dresses are here: Sophia, Robin and Serena, all in black. I let them choose. At first, all three wanted Robin, but then they didn’t all want to wear the same dress.

Holy moley…those dresses are expensive! Are you paying for all those dresses or are they buying them themselves? They’re really gorgeous though, and I wish I could use those dresses for my wedding…

I love jcrew! My girls are doing jcrew dresses. I looked elsewhere, but even at david’s bridal the prices were similar, and we didn’t like the dresses as much. My only stipulation was navy, but they needed something light because we’re getting married in Mexico. I only have 2 female brideaids, so I asked them to do the same fabric, but if I had more, I definitely would have just given the color at jcrew. They chose the sophia and the Cecilia. Very cute! I like the idea of giving them a choice of fabrics because it also gives them different price points. Plus, jcrew is so easy to order and return, and the sales are great!

Jmc- it’s funny you bm’s definitely wanted different dresses! Mine keep asking if I’m sure I don’t want them to match!

I wore the Sophia short in Silk Tricotine in a wedding and it was the best dress I have ever worn as a BM. It fit all bodies and it was SO flattering in the pictures. JCrew makes really high quality dresses, so you really can’t go wrong! :)

I love love love J Crew dresses.

I think giving them the color and letting them choose any style/fabric they want could make for a really lovely group of bridesmaids.

my bridesmaids are wearing jcrew dresses, in espresso. i got a bunch of fabric swatches from them and noticed that the color looked quite different in the different fabrics. for some consistency, i told them to choose a dress within the same fabric - and they ended up all choosing the same dress! they’ll be in the sophia in the silk chiffon.

i’d recommend getting fabric swatches so that you can really see what color the dresses will be.

gorgeous JCrew-ness as usual.

i say let the ladies pick out 2 of their faves maybe, then you can try and see if the various materials look alright together and swap as necessary?

I love light gray bridesmaids dresses. I wish we could do those, but I’m being vetoed for lbds, which is okay. :)

Hey there, I just got married and my bridesmaids wore the sophia in silk tricotine, in espresso. I see that is not on your final list. but any J Crew dress you choose will be fantastic!!!! The quality of the dresses far exceeds so many bridesmaid dress designers in that price range, and the girls will be able to wear them again because the styles are so classic. We got tons of compliments for our bridesmaids outfits, and my sister is looking at J Crew for her wedding also. Try to get free shipping! Good luck!

oh I forgot to tell you, you could have them all one color or alternating - I’ve found that girls with different dresses (other than the maid of honor) look too scattered and not organized. Cotton will not be as formal as the other fabrics, but J Crew has that new cotton line that looks beautiful. The silk tricotine was perfect for our modern style wedding, taffeta can be shiny and hard to wear again as it will always look like a bridesmaids dress, but maybe the J crew taffeta isn’t too shiny….

i say different styles, but i would definitely keep to the same fabric. some of those are more dressy than others and the colors might play differently on different fabrics.

Chick, I’m trying to make the same exact decision. I think I know which J.Crew color I want for my BM dresses. I’m planning on letting them pick the style, but I’m not sure whether I should dictate the fabric or not. I’m leaning towards not… but I’m worried that the color will look different in the different fabric choices. Do you know if J. Crew can mail you fabric swatches? This is something that I want to look into. Good look making your decision!

@skibobrown: Hi! JCrew can definitely mail you swatches. I need to do the same. I have the cotton and silk tricotine, but I need the silk taffeta swatch. Just email ashley@jcrew.com. Good luck!

Warning I ordered the Sophia in light pewter for my maid of honor and she looked like a ghost in it, it’s a hard color to pull off, it makes many people looked totally washed out.

Great dresses, Miss Chick! I wore a bridesmaid’s dress from JCrew in Silk Tricotine and it was by far my favorite BM dress ever–I’ve worn it since as well.
For my wedding next fall, I’m choosing he dress color and asking my bridesmaids to choose their own style. My MOH will wear an additional accent color with her dress to set her apart. It might be cool to mix & match fabrics as well but you’d want to make sure to see the swatches together to make sure they’re not too different.
I’ve been really happy to see the results of asking the BM’s to choose their styles. Each woman has chosen a style that is very “her” and they have said that they’ve really liked being able to be part of the choice.
Good luck to you–with the choices listed here it will be next to impossible for you to go wrong!

I love those dresses! I am planning to do the same color scheme: grey and pink. My only concern is that the “light pewter” will be so light it’s nearly white. Have you seen them in person Chick?

@ellen: Wuddup Ellen! As it happens, I went to the store today to see it. It is very pale so in pics it might look close to white, which is a look I wouldn’t really mind, but if you do mind then I would maybe choose another color? They have Graphite which is a little darker gray…hope this helps!

I liked each dress more than the one before it! Your girls are going to have a fab time choosing!

I went with chiffon for my BMs b/c the fabric is more forgiving than others, especially satin. Two of my 3 BMs were pregnant so the draping skirt looked nice.

We also did grey and pink, but looking back, there wasn’t much pink! I just LOVE grey.

LOVE J.Crew dresses. My ladies are wearing the J.Crew Ruffle Wrap dress in Chocolate Brown. I’m very excited about it (probably because I already own it in black AND in pewter)!
