Miss Ramen's Picture
Miss Ramen, Phoenix Age and Occupation: 26, Optometry Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Industrial Designer Engagement Date: January 3, 2009 Wedding Date: December 2009 Venue: Phoenix Art Museum About Me: I'm an SF-born, Seattle-raised girl, transplanted to Phoenix where I'll be getting married, and planning all the way from Orange County where I go to school (yes, it feels as crazy as it sounds). I loooooove Yogurtland, am slightly very obsessed with all things paper, am heavily addicted to wedding blogs, deeply desire a puppy, thoroughly enjoy cooking, cry when I watch (almost all) movies, thrive on solo car-karaoke, can't stop being sarcastic, am neurotic about taking pictures of almost everything I eat before I eat it, and aspire to travel the world. My super-talented fiance and I are attempting to DIY a majority of our massive (~350 guests) "clean & modern, yet romantic, but completely unexpected, with a teeny dash of vintage" wedding, stay within our not-so-massive budget, and somehow get a really luxe (but still fun!) look/feel at the same time. In music terms (since we're both really into music) think Coldplay meets Motown meets Kanye meets Sinatra.
About Miss Ramen

Eh. That was my last attempt at a funny title. So this post will be about the Ramen engagement shoot numero uno. That’s right, we’ve had more than 1. Let me explain.

Remember our photographers? The globe-trotting ones who are insanely busy? Well, since we had this whole long-distance relationship with them, we decided to opt for a day-after shoot instead of an engagement session. This works out perfectly - I’ve always dreamed of a sexy desert-scenery photo shoot with my soon-to-be husband. I think. Eh.

At any rate, I desperately wanted to have a photo book guestbook filled with cute shots of my beloved and me. Why? I dunno. It sort of makes a nice use of your e-pics, right? Call it Wedding-Trend-Syndrome. I have that, bad.

So, Mr. Ramen and I decided to just ask 2 of our good friends to take some shots of us around Phoenix. Then later on, we would have Sister Ramen take some shots in and around SF. All of them armed with fancy-schmancy digital SLRs.

So we chose an altogether too-hot of a day in August to shoot around some places in Mesa and Tempe Town Lake.

I seriously never knew my butt could sweat like that. We actually stopped by Mr. R’s condo in between locations so I could shower. So nasty. Anyways, here are a few of my faves from that day! (There were only, oh… a million shots to sort through! Crazy!)

Our friends B & E did a great job - and B’s new husband D was a great assistant - he carried our stuff and helped pose us while B snapped away! Great teamwork! We took them out for some fancy pizza on Mill Ave afterwards to thank them - we are seriously so blessed to have such great friends who would brave the intense heat!!!! B even spent some time Photoshopping a few of her favorite shots for us!

A few tips for DIY-photo shoots:

  • It helps if your friends have SLRs - although some PASs are pretty awesome, if you know how to manipulate them well. You can rent fancy lenses from various camera shops for about $50 or so a day/weekend. This is always a good option if you don’t have the $$ to buy a lens.
  • Have someone learn Photoshop! I for one am not someone that could do so, but Mr. R, and all of our photogs are pretty proficient at Photoshop - which is nice to fix the lighting, and so on.
  • Bring water!!! Maybe this just goes for crazy people who have sessions in Phoenix during the summer, but drinking water kept us hydrated and happy.
  • Choose a couple of different outfits - and make sure they complement each other.
  • Scout out your locations earlier - it saves time.
  • Clean your ring before your shoot - it gets a lot of attention!
  • Have your photog take a MILLION shots of the same scene; taking just one or 2 shots is a guarantee that someone’s eyes will be closed/crossed/not looking at the right spot in all of them. Out of literally 200+ shots, we probably have a good 30 that we really like and both look good in.

Still to come, our SF photo shoot with the ever-so-talented Sister Ramen!

Did you have any friends do your e-pics? How did they turn out? Do you have any tips for DIY engagement photography or photography with photography enthusiasts?

His mom took our first set of e-pics! ;) They came out… okay. Not so good that we won’t still have professional ones done!

You are adorable! My brother agreed to do our engagement photos. He is a film student, but likes to play with his camera a lot - I am excited about it!

Great pictures! Props to your talented friends. We’re planning (intentionally) on two sessions as well. The first with our photographer for the wedding and then a day of DIYs (as I am a shutter bug and can’t stand not to try my hand at something). My tripod and great lighting is definitely key for the DIY session.

We did our e-session the first week of Sept in the phoenix heat and it was miserable! For some reason though, fortunatley - you can’t see the beads of sweat dripping down our faces… ha… so thats good. The pictures look great - what talented friends!

My FSIL took our’s and I love them! One of our GM is planning on starting a photography business, so he wants to take some in the spring (which is fine by me!)

Poor FI had a 103 fever and was totally not feeling well but didn’t tell me how bad he was actually feeling until later because he knew how much I wanted the photos. :) What a sweetie.

We really could not afford an engagement photo shoot, so when my little brother came to visit us in August we had him take some e-pics for us. He has a pretty good eye. We went to a local arboretum here in Houston and it was 100+ that day. In addition to water bottles I also soaked rags in freezing water for all three of us and put them in ziploc bags before we left. About mid way through we took them out and cooled off the back of our necks, faces, etc. I also brought dry rags to dry us off with after. I brought my makeup as well for touch ups but I was worried about it melting. I really wanted some new pics of us for our STDs and guest book (I’m all about that trend as well :) )

You can see them here:

We had a friend of a friend take our engagement pix at the same Mesa location. She does a great job- I recommend for anyone who needs a valley photographer.

I feel like the main difference between a pro and amateur photographer is getting everybody to look at you for the shoot and timing the shots right. We paid ($30) for an e-shoot from a start-up photographer and out of the pictures, there aren’t that many that we really love - we definitely got enough to get our money’s worth, but I’m disappointed that in so many of them we are looking in the wrong place or have weird expressions….

We also had a friend DIY our engagement photos. I agree with a lot of your tips, the “assistant” is key along with a delicious dinner as a thank you and way to spend some time together after ward. I would also suggest bringing along a few fun props (umbrella, scarf, ball, whatever) for inspiration. Our friend liked to capture natural interaction better than poses so we worked with his style to get some really great pictures and asked him to do a few posed ones that we arranged. Like you, we ended up with about 40 out of 200+ shots because he knew to take multiples of the same shot. We didn’t stake out locations but went to the city in which he lives and wandered around stopping when inspired.
