Extreme Beauty

October 30th, 2009 @ 2:26 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Okay, this post is going to sound kind of gross. I kept trying to figure out how to talk about this in a less gross way, and just couldn’t.

My entire life, I’ve always had moles on my neck and collar bone area. Not hairy, gross moles, but not sweet beauty mark moles, either.

My nieces frequently point them out and ask me what they are and why I have so many. This is not really easy to explain to little girls, so I usually just say they are big freckles, and that it was just the way I was born.

But, I’ve been self-conscious of them and wanted to get rid of them for some time now. Well, the wedding was my motivation to finally do it. Once I picked out my strapless wedding dress I knew there was no reason to keep waiting. So, recently I went to the dermatologist and started getting them removed. I figured that I couldn’t get them off all at once, so I settled for two. My doctor warned me that because they are on my neck and chest that they could lead to keloids, so I was extra careful to follow all the post-op care advice, and I’m glad to report––no keloids! The worst part was the healing, because I had to wear Band-Aids on my neck and got lots of “covering up hickies” comments. Ahh, sigh. But, they’re gone.

Now I feel a lot better, and once I got rid of the 2 I hated most, I think I can just leave the rest of them.

Did you take on any extreme beauty measures before the wedding?

I feel you on the moles! I find the ones on my neck are the worst because I’ve accidentally brushed them a couple of times (plus the hairdresser has combed one of them a few times, ouch). Mostly it’s not a cosmetic thing for me though, I just find them annoying. I probably won’t get rid of them.

I have a few on my back that I can’t wait to get rid of. Extreme for the wedding? Maybe getting invisalign? I had braces and didn’t do the retainer thing, so now I’m self conscious about the teeth that are shifting back. :(

I’ve regretted getting my upper arm tattoos for about the last 6 years now. They normally don’t bother me much but for times I want to be classy and dressed up (like in my wedding, hello!) I feel like there are huge spotlights on them. We had a quick engagement (6 months) but I did do a couple rounds of laser tattoo removal on each tattoo to try and fade them as much as possible before the wedding. It helped somewhat and I covered them up with makeup. Very painful, and if I had had more time, they would have been gone for my wedding.

Mr P has some big ones that he hates too. We’ve talked about getting them removed before the wedding but he thinks it will be expensive because it’s elective. I guess we should make an apt to find out.

I’m so glad you got rid of them and they healed great. I have to say, I was curious about what keloids were and I probably shouldn’t have followed the link after lunch! So glad you didn’t get those :)

@hcritton: I have that issue too! Need to get rid of the tattoo!
@Miss Pretzel: Mine was just a regular office visit. Not expensive at all.

I’m like you, Fro Yo, tons and tons and tons of moles! I’ve had the biggest ones removed (2 on my back, one on my face, 2 on my stomach and 2 on my arm) but there’s still a bunch more I’d like to get rid of…Unfortunately, my insurance doesn’t fully cover things like that and it would be a pretty chunk of change, so I guess I’ll be a polka dotted bride…oh well!

I’m getting a breast augmentation before the wedding but I’ve wanted this for a few years now and it just so happens that I can afford it now but I’m not getting boobs specifically for the wedding. The fiance just started his invisilign and that process should be done a month before the wedding. I guess we’re a bit extreme haha

I just finished session two of six of underarm electrolysis. This was mostly spurred by our French Polynesian honeymoon, but I’ve always wanted to avoid obnoxious razor burn and this was finally my excuse to endure the pain and the cost. I think it’ll definately be worth it to never have to shave my armpits again!

Ok, first off, the link…ewwww.

I’ve had several moles taken off over various parts of my body and I’ve never heard of the side effect that you linked to… I’ve never had any complications either. They usually just burn or slice them off so it’s super easy and not expensive at all.

Based on what everyone above has said, I’m not going to click on that link about keloids. Glad you were able to get them successfully removed!

Yeah, I think that the wikipedia site makes them a little extreme. I’ve seen people with keloids and they are A LOT more tame than that. But either way, I was glad I was left without.

I finally took the plunge and started Accutane. The original plan was to be done with treatment before the wedding, but I’ll still be taking it about a month after the wedding. I definitely don’t regret my decision to start Accutane!

About a year before my wedding, I got the Silk’n home laser hair removal contraption. I split it with my mom and sister so it wasn’t ridiculously expensive. It kind of worked, but it wasn’t spectacular. I would say it was worth the third that I contributed towards the cost.

I have a keloid scar on my shoulder…it’s been there since I was 10 years old…I used to be so self-conscience of it that I would avoid sleeveless shirts and if they were necessary I would wear a band-aid. It is funny because I barely pay attention to it now. I always thought I wanted to find a way to reduce it, but I grew comfortable in my own skin. I do want to get zoom whitening done though…gotta have those pearly whites for the wedding photos!

I have a mole/birthmark on the back of my neck…kind of in my hair though. I got one taken off the side of my head years ago because it kept catching in my brush and changed color (yuck) You can’t really see the one on the back of my neck, but it’s starting to darken a bit, so time to get it taken off and tested. Also, I don’t want to risk the chance that you’ll be able to see it if my hair is up!

It is good your insurance covered getting them removed! If you have any type of scarring, I would recommend kelocote, which is like mederma. It is great and really helps minimize even the tiniest of scarring left. You can rub it in twice a day up to one year afterwards. MY husband has been dying to remove a mole on my face for the longest time but I am afraid it will be painful!

I also had two moles removed for my wedding, one on the side of the neck and one on the upper back/almost neck area. The upper back removal left a keloid, the other one healed great. I followed all post-removal instructions and still got the keloid. Apparently the upper body is highly prone to keloids. Anyway, I covered it up for the wedding with makeup, but it still bugs the crap out of me. Went in last week to see if anything could be done and my plastic surgeon gave me an injection that helps to minimize/flatten the keloid. So far I do see a difference and I am going in next month for a follow-up and perhaps to get another injection. I wish I would have just left it alone!

I am currently discussing acne treatment with my physician. We are switching different BC pills to see if that makes a difference. But I am so nervous about what my face will look like on my wedding day. My acne is very bright red and angry, and always comes back in the same spots - chin, forehead, and upper cheeks. When I get a pimple it takes FOREVER to heal. :( I will just have to be really amazing with makeup if it doesn’t get much better. Here is hoping it does before then!
