About Miss Snow

Gocco Vs. Yudu

October 30th, 2009 @ 2:02 pm by Miss Snow

source

Mr. Snow is a designer. He has some experience with screen printing, and we’d like to put those skills to good use in our wedding for invites, napkins, t-shirts, tote bags, and everything printable under the sun. :)

But our existence in a tiny two-bedroom apartment without access to a printing studio makes this idea a little… challenging to execute.

Enter the Gocco. Yes, it has a cult following. It is small and cute and easy to use. And very very very discontinued. (You can Google the campaigns to save it. They worked… for a while.)

There’s also the Yudu. It isn’t as sexy and hip and obscure as the Gocco, but you can actually get one. So which will we choose, if any? Stay tuned…

Are you a loyal Goccoer? Or, have you had a chance to try out a Yudu? Do you have a preference?

I got a Gocco, but I probably would have gotten a Yudu if I had known, just because of availability of supplies!

Thank GOODNESS someone is writing about this? I’ve been fielding offers to buy other people’s Gocco’s for weeks, but I’m holding out until I do some more research. I’m tempted by the Yudu because I’m intimidated by the thought of not being able to get the Gocco supplies much longer. Can’t wait to read the follow-up! Thanks!

That’s so funny… I was doing research yesterday about the two. I’d LOVE both but am SOOOO sad about the Gocco supplies being discontinued… so looks like eventually I’ll have to get the Yudu.

The only problem with the Yudu is that the screen isn’t as fine, so you can’t do small print very clearly. But I think I read that they’re coming out with a new finer screen soon. I think my fiancé would love the Yudu so he could make his own T-Shirts… (he has a gazillion t-shirts!) Maybe THAT’s how I could justify the large purchase.

I have both the Gocco and Yudu but am waiting to try the Yudu until a paper mesh screen is available (I don’t have much use for fabric screen printing at the moment). Love how you can just go to Michaels and buy supplies… I’m not one for really waiting for supplies to start a project. I’ve stocked up on Gocco stuff but not really on allllll the inks. I look forward to Yudu being a replacement, esp. because the screens are reusable. I love my gocco but it’s so small, and it hurts my heart every time I use 2 more flashbulbs. Wish supplies weren’t so coveted! It makes me hesitant to do projects… much like Elaine on Seinfeld… “Is this a Spongeworthy man?” “Is this a Goccoworthy project?”

I’m so glad you’re writing about this, because I am desperate to buy a Yudu, and I’m curious to see a (possible) review for it! I’ve heard good things about both though…the discontinuing of the Gocco hurts my heart a little bit though, because of the fact that there’s so much helpful information to work with about the Gocco on WB :(

@Mrs. Penguin: lol. love the seinfeld comparison.

i was thinking of getting a gocco but my indecision saved me a headache once i found out it was being discontinued again for real. the yudu is HUGE and kind of daunting. i’ll sit on that and see what everyone says. though i doubt i’ll have much use for it post-wedding planning

Hello,

I litterally am in the process of buying a Gocco after seeing Miss Hamster’s post I knew I had to have one for wedding planning. My question is, Is this a dying art and should I purchase a Yudu over the Gocco? If you know anything about this issue please pm me, because I know little about each machine but i don’t want to purchase a Gocco if I won’t be able to take advantage of it for a long while.

Thanks!

I have a gocco and I love it. It is really unfortunately that there isn’t a company that won’t pick up production of the supplies since its regaining popularity in the US. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed.

I researched the Yudu and was concerned that it doesn’t print small text really well. I also have a coworker who recommended buying a screen printing kit from any local art store, but he said that doesn’t print small text very well either.

So frustrating!

I don’t want to spoil the the surprise on this one, but I will throw out a few factors that came up during our research (without giving anything away):

1. We found that the Yudu is often excluded from those awesome Michael’s coupons, so at least for a while, they’ll be tough to find on sale/ for a deal.

2. Recently Polaroid ceased all production, and someone (Urban Outfitters, I believe) picked up the rights to start producing the films and cameras. In some Gocco-related craft blog post I read, someone suggested that something like this might happen for the Gocco too (again, just rumors at this point and right now, the Gocco and its supplies are quickly becoming obsolete).

3. According to Mr. Snow, actual screen printing (like with silk and mesh screens) is pretty messy and heavy on supplies (think high-pressured hoses!). If you can’t get into a studio, it might hard to justify all the expenses/mess unless you’re looking to start a business or take it up as a serious hobby.

Glad this has generated some fun discussion!

The Yudu’s can be pretty expensive. JoAnn’s sells them for $249+, and their 40% off coupons list them as exempt (total bummer!). I haven’t checked Michael’s yet…

@Miss Snow: You know, it crossed my mind that the Gocco might show up at Urban Outfitters…seems like something they’d carry! ;)

I’ve never tried either, but everyone using them on weddingbee makes me really want to try one!

@Megan M: Invites/small text would be a no-go with the equipment I used. I mainly use mine for fabric work.

I have a Yudu. It’s nearly impossible to find supplies for it at my local stores, but it’s okay since you can use other brands of screenprint materials and it still works.

I love actual screen-printing, but it is really messy. Right now I stick to intaglio. I’m weird.

I’ve been meaning to post this in the DIY section but I’ll share here for now. I’m using another option - PhotoEZ screen printing. It’s kind of old school screen printing, you can use speedball inks and others but it’s pretty cheap compared to Gocco and Yudu. Here’s a link: http://ezscreenprint.com/photoezstarterkits.aspx.
I already silk screened our OOT bags and coasters. If anyone wants more info just PM me b/c I’ll probably forget to check back here!

OK - help me out here. I keep hearing about these things, but so far I am not picking up the craze.

What am I missing here? What’s the big deal? Why are these things so great? Are they really much better than just getting things printed or printing them yourself?

Totally not knocking! Just curious! :)

I have a yudu but like Pengy I’m waiting for the screen that you can do paper with. We made shirts and there was a learning curve but they looked good once we figured it out.

Amazon.com has the Yudu for about $200, free shipping, no sales tax.

I bought mine a few months back and haven’t used it yet. It intimidates me.

I have a Yudu…love it. Some of my projects are on my blog if you’d like to stop by & check them out.

I’ve used the 110 screens for printing on paper & it came out pretty well. They just came out with 220 screens for printing on paper…I just got some but haven’t had a chance to test them out yet. -Hopefully soon. I’ll post my results on my blog.

I really want a gocco, but like you said — they’re rare. I’ve heard that the Yudu is great, but I don’t know much about it yet. Can’t wait to see what you decided on!

@shesgotchutzpah: My impression of it is that you have far more freedom in choosing your design on whatever you want to put it on - paper, favor bags, etc.
You don’t necessarily have to have stellar artistic skills - you can use any image you want be it something from a print publication or your own design.
Ultimately, I think it’s a money saver if you have the time…
(I think!)

I really love screen printing - it is so much fun - and I would love a gocco…but yeah, that whole discontinued thing is not exactly in my favor!

@Miss Snow: @Miss Snow: I remember 10 years ago when Gocco was being discontinued and starting to get scarce. If someone hasn’t picked up the product line for new production since then, I wonder if they ever will
the Yudu seems to fit that gap in the marketplace
ProvoCraft is a big player in the craft industry which helps for r&d

@BirdofaFeather: Sorry, hopefully you’ll be able to find it in stores soon. I was given mine by the manufacture.
