Is your SO’s profession in line with what you thought his/her profession would be?
Mrs. Dorsay - Hmm, hard to say. I never thought, ‘I want to be with a lawyer or a doctor or a web designer.’
I always hoped that my future spouse would be in a creative field and I’m very happy that Mr. D is. Between the two of us, our house will always be filled with ideas and interesting projects!
Mrs. Tulip - DC has the country’s highest number of lawyers per capita — most of the people I know are lawyers, and most of the people THEY know are lawyers. So it’s not terribly surprising that Mr T and I share law as a profession.
While any couple can appreciate each other’s talents, there’s a layer of added understanding when you’re in the same field. It’s nice to have an editor and professional sounding board on hand 24/7. And luckily our strengths are diverse — I’m a better writer and he’s a better businessman — so we both respect each other as the more talented partner. (Though he never lets me forget that I scored higher on the LSAT, ha ha.)
Miss Frozen Yogurt - I never really envisioned what my future spouse’s profession would be. If I had to guess though, I thought I would marry someone with a profession more similar to mine. But, I never would have guessed equity trader. I’m still not sure I know exactly what he does all day.
Mrs. Lovebird - I keep teasing Mr. Lovebird that we are gonna frame his first paycheck (which he won’t receive until July of 2011 when he starts his residency). His profession—from when we met until this day—has always been “student”. I never thought about my future spouse’s profession, but the fact that he’ll be a doctor in a year and a half ain’t too shabby in my book. Hopefully all these years of supporting him will pay off if he’s good at what he does and enjoys his work.
Miss French Fries - I never really thought about what I wanted my spouse’s occupation to be… but I did know that I wanted him to love whatever he did. Luckily, Mr. FF is in a job that he loves, so that part worked out! I’m not exactly sure what his day involves (somewhat like Chandler Bing on Friends) but I know he works hard and enjoys it!
Mrs. Peep Toe - I love a man in a suit, but seeing as Mr. Peep makes wine, he never wears one for work!! But how could I say no to someone in the wine industry! A girl’s dream, right!?? But now that he’s back in school getting his MBA in Sustainable Business, it totally throws me off that we will be in similar fields.
Mrs. Cowboy Boot - I always knew I’d be with someone creative. I thought it would be musically, though, as I’d dated musicians in the past. But Mr. CB has the painting skills to pay the bills. And I have the painting skills of a kindergartner. That just means he inspires me often.
Mrs. Gummi Bear - I never had any preference, but what I ended up with makes sense. I’m a gamer and a geek, so every single one of my boyfriends has been involved in the video game industry or has been a software engineer. I like geeks. So Mr. GB is both of those things… a software engineer for games! It’s like a beautiful union of really dorky things all together in one ginger package.
Mrs. Dumpling - I never really thought about the job my future spouse would have. I didn’t even think about marriage until I met Mr. Dumpling, and I knew I would marry him if he was a doctor or a cashier at the grocery store. I just wanted someone that would take care of me (not financially!).
Mrs. Stiletto - I honestly never imagined what my future hubby would or wouldn’t do. However, in the 3 1/2 years we have been together, I’ve seen him going from a 50-60 hour a week job that he wasn’t truly happy in, that gave him very little time off and horrendous commutes into the suburbs, to his life now, starting his business in a creative field, setting his own hours, being his own boss, and he’s so happy! It’s all I could have ever wished for.
Mrs. Sea Breeze - Honestly, the thought never crossed my mind. I think that the fact that we are both on marketing-related career paths is great though, because we have fun bouncing ideas off each other and we sort of ‘get’ how the other thinks.
Mrs. Mouse - I can’t remember ever thinking about what my future spouse’s profession would be. The Dude is a civil engineer, but he’s also really into making music. So he has something that he’s very good at and he gets paid to do it (but he hates it) and something that he’s pretty good at and gets paid nothing to do (but he loves). I’d love it if he could quit his job and do something that he enjoyed more at some point.
Mrs. Joey - I thought my spouse would would work in the Foreign Service and I’d there with him (in another department). The foreign service could still happen, but I imagine he’d end up at an American High School abroad instead of at an Embassy.
Mrs. Penguin - My dad is a small business owner and I know how difficult it is to spend money like every check you have is potentially the last one you’ll get in a while. Plus, independent health insurance is so expensive, and while my dad would never ever live any other way (he could never have a boss), I just knew that while I enjoyed the same lifestyle as my dad, I wouldn’t necessarily want to marry someone with a fluctuating paycheck like that. So I always thought I’d ideally marry some sort of “professional” that worked in a structured environment with a steady paycheck.
Mr. Peng is in health care, and his job is exactly that: paycheck, good health insurance, steady. It gives me a bit more freedom to be like my dad, and work at home, which I enjoy. Another thing I like about Mr. Peng being in health care is that there isn’t a lot of drama to talk about, and we don’t talk about our jobs too extensively at home. I always thought it was such a drag growing up when my dad would talk about business all day (and I eventually worked with him, and it got worse!), even when we weren’t working. I enjoy having a life outside of work-stuff, and because Mr. Peng’s job is pretty “same in, same out”, we’re not stuck talking about a bunch of boring work stuff, because it’s too boring to talk about!
Mrs. Pinot Noir - This wasn’t ever something I really thought about, although I would have guessed that my spouse would be in some kind of “helping” field - non-profit, teacher, health care, etc. When I met him he worked on a political campaign, and now he works in market research.
Miss Labrador - To be honest, I never even thought of this before reading this question! I guess I just always thought I’d marry a super-hot famous actor and that was that. Hmmm… is that normal?
Miss Potato Chips - I never thought about what my future spouse’s profession might be, but I DID say, “When I make enough money, the first thing I’m going to do is hire a personal trainer.” And now I’m engaged to one. Suhweet!!
Mrs. Toucan - I don’t know, but not an actuary! I’m pretty sure I still wouldn’t even know what an actuary is if it weren’t for Mr. Toucan (for those who don’t know, think Ben Stiller in Along Came Polly)!
Miss Cookie - I never thought about what my spouse’s profession would be, but I didn’t want to marry anyone that had my same profession. I just wanted my husband to be happy in what he was doing and making a livable income. Although, I never thought I’d marry someone as analytical and logical as Mr. Cookie because I’m more of the creative and abstract type.
Miss Lamb - I thought I would end up with someone like my Dad (a civil engineer) or my Grandpa (military). It turns out that the Lambster was a mechanical engineer and joined the Navy! Funnily enough, he’s left both of those fields and is pursuing finance now.
Mrs. Duckling - Mr. Ducky does marketing communications and public relations for a company. I’m not sure I ever thought about what my spouse’s profession would be. Most of the men in my family are accountants, but I don’t think I thought I’d marry someone who was. However, Mr. Ducky’s job involves creativity, which is something I wanted my future spouse to have.
Miss Ramen - I had no dreams about what my future husband’s occupation would be, but I did NOT think it would be something so creative! Mr. Ramen is an Industrial Designer, and I love his artistic nature and appreciation for creativity. It also makes him invaluable to our wedding planning, hehe!
Ms. Sushi - I can honestly say that I’ve never thought of what my future hubby’s profession would be. Hell, I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up (still don’t)! Although most guys that I’ve dated in the past were very blue collar (machinist, HVAC, roofer), so if anything, I thought I would end up with someone pretty handy. Hehe… ohhh I definitely didn’t end up with a handy man. But I love him just the same. Mr. Sushi works in a warehouse to pay the bills, but he is very artistic. He can draw, he writes, he rhymes, he makes music… his talents are endless. He just doesn’t use hammers or wrenches.
Miss Moonbeam - I never thought about what FH’s profession would be, but I like that Mr. MB is keeping a very realistic career option (finance division) open while working towards the creative dream career of screenwriter. It says a lot about his work ethic and I think it blends the grown-up qualities and the dreamer qualities well.
Mrs. Bunny - Like Lamb, I wouldn’t have been surprised in the slightest if I ended up with an engineer or someone in the military, since my dad was both. I never dreamed I would end up with someone in the same profession I’m in — writing — and that he would be such a dreamer and an artist!
