Is your SO’s profession in line with what you thought his/her profession would be?

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Dorsay Mrs. Dorsay - Hmm, hard to say. I never thought, ‘I want to be with a lawyer or a doctor or a web designer.’ :) I always hoped that my future spouse would be in a creative field and I’m very happy that Mr. D is. Between the two of us, our house will always be filled with ideas and interesting projects! :)

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Tulip Mrs. Tulip - DC has the country’s highest number of lawyers per capita — most of the people I know are lawyers, and most of the people THEY know are lawyers. So it’s not terribly surprising that Mr T and I share law as a profession.

While any couple can appreciate each other’s talents, there’s a layer of added understanding when you’re in the same field. It’s nice to have an editor and professional sounding board on hand 24/7. And luckily our strengths are diverse — I’m a better writer and he’s a better businessman — so we both respect each other as the more talented partner. (Though he never lets me forget that I scored higher on the LSAT, ha ha.)

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Frozenyogurt Miss Frozen Yogurt - I never really envisioned what my future spouse’s profession would be. If I had to guess though, I thought I would marry someone with a profession more similar to mine. But, I never would have guessed equity trader. I’m still not sure I know exactly what he does all day. :)

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Lovebird Mrs. Lovebird - I keep teasing Mr. Lovebird that we are gonna frame his first paycheck (which he won’t receive until July of 2011 when he starts his residency). His profession—from when we met until this day—has always been “student”. I never thought about my future spouse’s profession, but the fact that he’ll be a doctor in a year and a half ain’t too shabby in my book. Hopefully all these years of supporting him will pay off if he’s good at what he does and enjoys his work.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Frenchfries Miss French Fries - I never really thought about what I wanted my spouse’s occupation to be… but I did know that I wanted him to love whatever he did. Luckily, Mr. FF is in a job that he loves, so that part worked out! I’m not exactly sure what his day involves (somewhat like Chandler Bing on Friends) but I know he works hard and enjoys it!

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Peeptoe Mrs. Peep Toe - I love a man in a suit, but seeing as Mr. Peep makes wine, he never wears one for work!! But how could I say no to someone in the wine industry! A girl’s dream, right!?? But now that he’s back in school getting his MBA in Sustainable Business, it totally throws me off that we will be in similar fields.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Cowboyboot Mrs. Cowboy Boot - I always knew I’d be with someone creative. I thought it would be musically, though, as I’d dated musicians in the past. But Mr. CB has the painting skills to pay the bills. And I have the painting skills of a kindergartner. That just means he inspires me often.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Gummibear Mrs. Gummi Bear - I never had any preference, but what I ended up with makes sense. I’m a gamer and a geek, so every single one of my boyfriends has been involved in the video game industry or has been a software engineer. I like geeks. So Mr. GB is both of those things… a software engineer for games! It’s like a beautiful union of really dorky things all together in one ginger package.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Dumpling Mrs. Dumpling - I never really thought about the job my future spouse would have. I didn’t even think about marriage until I met Mr. Dumpling, and I knew I would marry him if he was a doctor or a cashier at the grocery store. I just wanted someone that would take care of me (not financially!).

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Stiletto Mrs. Stiletto - I honestly never imagined what my future hubby would or wouldn’t do. However, in the 3 1/2 years we have been together, I’ve seen him going from a 50-60 hour a week job that he wasn’t truly happy in, that gave him very little time off and horrendous commutes into the suburbs, to his life now, starting his business in a creative field, setting his own hours, being his own boss, and he’s so happy! It’s all I could have ever wished for.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Seabreeze Mrs. Sea Breeze - Honestly, the thought never crossed my mind. I think that the fact that we are both on marketing-related career paths is great though, because we have fun bouncing ideas off each other and we sort of ‘get’ how the other thinks.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Mouse Mrs. Mouse - I can’t remember ever thinking about what my future spouse’s profession would be. The Dude is a civil engineer, but he’s also really into making music. So he has something that he’s very good at and he gets paid to do it (but he hates it) and something that he’s pretty good at and gets paid nothing to do (but he loves). I’d love it if he could quit his job and do something that he enjoyed more at some point.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Joey Mrs. Joey - I thought my spouse would would work in the Foreign Service and I’d there with him (in another department). The foreign service could still happen, but I imagine he’d end up at an American High School abroad instead of at an Embassy.
Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Penguin Mrs. Penguin - My dad is a small business owner and I know how difficult it is to spend money like every check you have is potentially the last one you’ll get in a while. Plus, independent health insurance is so expensive, and while my dad would never ever live any other way (he could never have a boss), I just knew that while I enjoyed the same lifestyle as my dad, I wouldn’t necessarily want to marry someone with a fluctuating paycheck like that. So I always thought I’d ideally marry some sort of “professional” that worked in a structured environment with a steady paycheck.

Mr. Peng is in health care, and his job is exactly that: paycheck, good health insurance, steady. It gives me a bit more freedom to be like my dad, and work at home, which I enjoy. Another thing I like about Mr. Peng being in health care is that there isn’t a lot of drama to talk about, and we don’t talk about our jobs too extensively at home. I always thought it was such a drag growing up when my dad would talk about business all day (and I eventually worked with him, and it got worse!), even when we weren’t working. I enjoy having a life outside of work-stuff, and because Mr. Peng’s job is pretty “same in, same out”, we’re not stuck talking about a bunch of boring work stuff, because it’s too boring to talk about! :)

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Pinotnoir Mrs. Pinot Noir - This wasn’t ever something I really thought about, although I would have guessed that my spouse would be in some kind of “helping” field - non-profit, teacher, health care, etc. When I met him he worked on a political campaign, and now he works in market research.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Labrador Miss Labrador - To be honest, I never even thought of this before reading this question! I guess I just always thought I’d marry a super-hot famous actor and that was that. Hmmm… is that normal?

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Potatochips Miss Potato Chips - I never thought about what my future spouse’s profession might be, but I DID say, “When I make enough money, the first thing I’m going to do is hire a personal trainer.” And now I’m engaged to one. Suhweet!!

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Toucan Mrs. Toucan - I don’t know, but not an actuary! I’m pretty sure I still wouldn’t even know what an actuary is if it weren’t for Mr. Toucan (for those who don’t know, think Ben Stiller in Along Came Polly)!

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Cookie Miss Cookie - I never thought about what my spouse’s profession would be, but I didn’t want to marry anyone that had my same profession. I just wanted my husband to be happy in what he was doing and making a livable income. Although, I never thought I’d marry someone as analytical and logical as Mr. Cookie because I’m more of the creative and abstract type.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Lamb Miss Lamb - I thought I would end up with someone like my Dad (a civil engineer) or my Grandpa (military). It turns out that the Lambster was a mechanical engineer and joined the Navy! Funnily enough, he’s left both of those fields and is pursuing finance now.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Duckling Mrs. Duckling - Mr. Ducky does marketing communications and public relations for a company. I’m not sure I ever thought about what my spouse’s profession would be. Most of the men in my family are accountants, but I don’t think I thought I’d marry someone who was. However, Mr. Ducky’s job involves creativity, which is something I wanted my future spouse to have.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Ramen Miss Ramen - I had no dreams about what my future husband’s occupation would be, but I did NOT think it would be something so creative! Mr. Ramen is an Industrial Designer, and I love his artistic nature and appreciation for creativity. It also makes him invaluable to our wedding planning, hehe!

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Sushi Ms. Sushi - I can honestly say that I’ve never thought of what my future hubby’s profession would be. Hell, I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up (still don’t)! Although most guys that I’ve dated in the past were very blue collar (machinist, HVAC, roofer), so if anything, I thought I would end up with someone pretty handy. Hehe… ohhh I definitely didn’t end up with a handy man. But I love him just the same. Mr. Sushi works in a warehouse to pay the bills, but he is very artistic. He can draw, he writes, he rhymes, he makes music… his talents are endless. He just doesn’t use hammers or wrenches. :)

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Moonbeam Miss Moonbeam - I never thought about what FH’s profession would be, but I like that Mr. MB is keeping a very realistic career option (finance division) open while working towards the creative dream career of screenwriter. It says a lot about his work ethic and I think it blends the grown-up qualities and the dreamer qualities well.

Relationship Series: Spouse's Profession : wedding features relationship series Bunny Mrs. Bunny - Like Lamb, I wouldn’t have been surprised in the slightest if I ended up with an engineer or someone in the military, since my dad was both. I never dreamed I would end up with someone in the same profession I’m in — writing — and that he would be such a dreamer and an artist!

What about you? Did you ever envision your future spouse’s profession? Was your vision in line with reality?

I had always dated creative types when I was younger, but I didn’t think it was likely that I’d marry someone in the arts… unless they were college-educated, 9-5 artist types. ;) I ended up with a psychologist.

Mrs. Lovebird i’m with ya! My FI’s occupation has been “student” forever it seems. After 10 years of school & residency it’ll be weird for me when he has a job! I had always thought i’d be with someone creative, but FI is sooo the opposite. I guess we balance each other out!

My high school and college jobs have all been in the food industry, so it doesn’t surprise me that I ended up with a chef. Now that I’m 9-5, it gets a little tricky handling his 80 hour work weeks with Mondays off, but it’s all worth it when we actually do see each other :)

Oh heavens no! I for sure thought I would marry a business man/ lawyer/ finance guy, do the whole “living forever in the same area/ suburban” thing. Boy is a minister who is getting his PhD in Ethics and wants to be a professor, so we’ll move around alot before he gets tenured somewhere. It’s amazing how differently things turned out, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Because I never thought about having a spose until Mr. WC came along, I never thought about the spouse’s profession. Since Mr. WC was my first serious relationship, any ideas I had about future mates were never really informed, deeply thought out ideas, borne out of experience. I assumed that because I am academic, that I would marry someone who was an academic. In the end, however, the playful, live-in-the-present part of my personality won out, in that I married someone in a non-professional office manager role in a field where experience, not education, is everything. It’s great to have a partner that keeps my life about laughter and pleasure, and is also there to support me in my more serious endeavours. I don’t know that I’d be able to provide those things to my spouse if he were more like me.

@ Mrs. Gummi Bear - I am a total geek gamer who is marrying a total geek gamer. Thing is, I am into console games while he likes the PC - so we “fight” over which is better, lol! FI is a computer engineer. I am completely hopeless when it comes to computers. One summer he built me a new computer from scratch! *sigh* that is my kind of romance :)

Like Miss Tulip, I’m a lawyer in D.C. I’m actually kind of surprised that I wound up with a non-lawyer (and a scientist to boot), but he is a lobbyist with a Ph.D. :-)

I always knew I wanted to marry a farmer boy. Or, at the very least, a working-man type who could do pretty much any kind of manual labor or fix anything if he needed to (that right thare is the short definition of a farmer). And yup, I got me my farmer man and I would seriously not have it any other way! I honestly don’t what I would do with a man that wore a suit to work, rather than Carhartts and jeans. Although, I’m glad there’s other girls out there who go for the suits because the suits sure wouldn’t have much luck with me!
I wish I could say that I would have fallen in love with my husband, regardless of his occupation, but farming and manual, blue-collar labor is so much a part of our life, that, well, I’m not sure!

As a PhD student in science, I don’t get out much :) so I always assumed I’d end up with another scientist, since those are the people I see all day, hang out with on weekends, etc! Turns out my fiance works a regular 9-5 at a non-profit organization! It was actually tough at first (and still can be) because as a graduate student in a lab, experiments dictate my schedule. Which means I usually work 9:30-6:30, but often have to stay as late as 9 (or later!) to finish something. It can be hard knowing my FI is at home relaxing and I still have to be at work! But it also brings a good balance to my life, not living and breathing science constantly, and having someone at home to remind me that an experiment can wait until tomorrow, because I want to see my fiance before he goes to sleep!

ahh, I thought I was going to marry a budding lawyer who would turn politician later in life. I found a guy heading to law school, fell in love, and then he told me decided to be a pastor!

So instead of law school, he’s at seminary…
Life will be nothing like I imagined it, but we’re happy with each other :-)

I never *really* thought about it, but I did know that I wanted someone that could match me on a creative level. MinMan does match up through his music and interests, but it’s not really his career (IT). I like that we have two different careers which apply to each other in interesting ways; technology/security and publishing/writing.

As a bonus, he’ll always have good work in internet security, and that allows me to write books without living in a box! :D

Once upon a time, many many years ago when I was a teenager I was sure I’d meet a famous rock star (it changed all the time) and we’d fall in love and I got out on the road with him as his manager and we’d live happily ever after.

Then I grew up and I never really had a preference but I was always more attracted to guys that didn’t work in an office. I wanted a man that worked outdoors-a farmer, rancher, park ranger, etc. I’ve got an IT guy that spends his days inside but loves the outdoors so it’s worked out pretty good.

Oh, I totally thought I responded to this before! Guess not. : )

My best friend and I are teachers, and we agreed early on that marrying other teachers would be a bore (for us!). We thought through all the other professions out there and decided that businessmen would give our lives balance. Haha, so random. But lookie now, I actually am marrying a business man!

I never really thought about that…huh! : D I suppose I could say yes, VERY loosely, based on two preconceptions: the whole “every girl marries her father” thing (my dad is a huge computer geek, as is my fiance; my dad’s an electrical engineer and my fiance is in computing science at the U) and the fact that I’m in nursing, and nurses are supposed to marry either doctors, engineers, or computer geeks (although, technically, I didn’t decide to go into nursing until AFTER I was planning to marry Camden).

I guess married life wasn’t something I ever thought about. : ) What can I say — I’m weird.
