Miss Pretzel's Picture
Miss Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I was born and raised in New Hampshire, went to undergrad and grad school at Purdue University in Indiana, had my career take me to Wisconsin, Atlanta, and then finally settled in Seattle. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. We love Chuck Taylor All Stars, holding hands, clever t-shirts, bacon, KEXP Radio, craft beer, buying local, cooking from scratch, gardening, mastering our new Gocco, and of course, each other. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
About Miss Pretzel

Dahlia, Je T’adore…

October 31st, 2009 @ 4:40 pm by Miss Pretzel

It’s no secret that dahlias are my favorite flower. Last month, Mr Pretzel IMed me this link. I just about jumped out of my seat! The Snohomish County (where I live) Dahlia Society was hosting the National Show. You might as well have said that Williams Sonoma was having a 99 cent clearance sale.

Needless to say, Mr Pretzel and I went to the show. I… was… in… heaven! I took lots of photos, got some tips from the members on growing my Dahlias and even got a website of a place that sells cut Dahlias. Apparently, the Snohomish County Society was celebrating 100 years of Dahlia shows—the longest running show in the country.

I plan to carry a Dahlia bouquet and use Dahlias at the reception. I emailed the local grower and was sad to find out he isn’t selling cut Dahlias anymore. Apparently selling Dahlia tubers online is more lucrative than selling the flowers. Boo! Still, I have high hopes of finding a local grower to contract with for my blooms.

Mr Pretzel did good. The trip to the show was amazing and I was inspired. Dahlia, Dahlia, Dahlia… je t’adore

Peonies and Dahlias are my favorites. Peonies are in season during our wedding, but sadly, Dahlias are not! :(

we went to the farmers market the morning of our wedding and I used white ones for my bouquet and burnt orange for the girls. Is there a local farmers market that you can check out?

@katemarie: Pike Place Market will have them, but we have a 1pm wedding and they don’t open until 10am. I’m trying to get my florist hooked up with a local grower, hopefully won’t be too much of a problem.

I. Love. Dahlias!!!!

I want to use them in all of our floral arrangements but I’m still waiting for the florist to let me know whether it will work or not with our budget…

Pretzel, I love dahlias, particularly the fluffy spiky variety.

What colors are you going to pick??

Ohhhh so pretty. I’m a huge fan of dahlias myself. There is that one Martha Stewart picture that is a huge part of my own wedding inspiration… the one with the orange polka dot tie and the orange dahlia boutonniere. So cute! I hear they are hard to make a good bout with, but I am determined to find a way!!!

@Miss Snow: I like the fluffy spiky kind too. I am thinking oranges, pinks, and even some yellows. I like the ones that have different colored tips. The red and yellow one above is my fav.
@spraguebride: Thanks!
@shesgotchutzpah: I’ve heard that too. We won’t be doing dahlia boots ourselves, I’ve got something else in mind

We used dahlias in our wedding too! They turned out BEAUTIFUL! There is a farm in Lynden (North 2 hours of Seattle) that has a TON of beautiful blooms for SUPER cheap. We only spent $200 on flowers and we got 500 stems. We used them for bouts and center pieces and bouquets. They’re not very hardy on the stem so they need to be wired to hold up to the day but they are super pretty all bunched together!

I don’t have a favorite flower, but I do like dahlias and peonies and all the random wildflower-esque flowers at the farmers market, which is where we’ll be getting our bouquets and centerpieces.

Did you see this event featured on Style Me Pretty that had lots of dahlias? This is what inspired my sister to try and grow dahlias for my wedding. :)

Dahlias are my favorite flower too! I grew a bunch last summer to see how they would do so that I can grow some of my own next summer for my wedding. They are so full and come in so many varieties. Cafe au lait dahlias are the cream of the crop.

Haha - I was just writing a post about flowers - and how dahlias are one of the few flowers that won’t be available in May! I loooove them!

So, so pretty — I wanted peonies or dahlias, and decided to go the peony route. Dahlias are awesome, though!

OMG, a girl after my own heart. I love dahlias! My florist didn’t exactly get what I wanted for mine on the day, (had to paint them)… but still- were very interesting.

I’m a Seattle bride as well (and a July 2010 bride too!), and I had no idea what a dahlia was until I started meeting with florists and one of them showed me a picture. I fell completely in love, and became giddy when I found out that they come in my wedding’s primary color (burgundy wine) AND are available locally - so, no shipping from overseas, which I had really hoped to minimize due to its impact on the climate. YES! I made sure my florist wrote down something to the effect of “dahlias frikking everywhere.” Now I want to grow them all over my backyard.
