Earlier this year, when we had so many days on the Wedding Countdown Calendar that I think it was in the 400 range, we met with a florist. She was a lovely gal, and I could see that she was quite talented. I told her what we wanted, which included bouquets, flowers for the guys, and centerpieces for around 10 tables (simple centerpieces: tightly packed white carnations in low glass holders). Easy peasy, right? Well, not so much.
We got her quote back, and the amount she was charging — for the centerpieces alone — was over our budget. We’re talking in the $150 range for a single centerpiece. Now, I understand that when you hire certain vendors you’re hiring their expertise, their skill, their artistry, and that floral design is no different. But I also understand that if I’m paying in that price range, I want a little more than just carnations. They were supposed to be a money-saver! Suffice to say that this vendor was out.
In the meantime, I hatched a plan to cut some of our floral budget — I axed the floral centerpieces for the tables. Some might find this shocking, but I didn’t really have an attachment to floral centerpieces to begin with. Between 10-12 tables for guests and 3 tables for our wedding party/ourselves, we’re talking about 15 tables, potentially. And that’s a lot of money for arrangements that are just going to die. So, instead, I came up with an alternative idea for our centerpieces. Candy.

Let’s get some shoes. Oh my god. Shoes.
Kudos to anyone who got that reference. If you didn’t, you need a Kelly refresher course, stat.
Similar to a large chunk of the female population, I LOVE shoes. There’s just something about them. The shape, the colors, the endless variations of styles, that feeling you get when you see a shoe that you just can’t live without. I left behind one pair of Nicole Miller shoes in high school because of the price tag, and to this day I still think about them. I’ve gone to stores and have literally had my breath taken away by some of the shoes out there. Like any self-proclaimed shoe addict, there is but only one Shoe Goddess:

Being a blogger for Weddingbee has definitely made me feel special/sort of celebrity-ish at times. But I’m just a normal gal who blogged about her wedding planning, and it was an honor to share it with all of you. Some bees have been recognized in public on several occasions (crazy, I know!).
Mr. Flamingo and I took part of a wedding TV show called La Bosse des Noces, and that was definitely an interesting experience.
A couple of weeks ago, I was flipping through the channels on the television and came face to face… with myself. Yup, our wedding was airing again on television. It was kind of neat. I have been wanting to share this video for quite some time, but trying to find a way to upload the video took longer than I anticipated. But I can finally share it with you now.
So for those of you who understand French - enjoy!

To say that October is a busy month for us is somewhat of an understatement. Not only do we have our impending Hallowedding quickly approaching, but I’ll be heading to Vancouver this weekend to spend Canadian thanksgiving with Mr. Doxie and his family, Saturday night is our engagement party (our first wedding-related event), and then I’ll have to scramble to get my house future-in-law ready for Mr. D’s arrival with his family. As in, deep cleaning everything and finishing all of my half-painted walls.
I’ll let you in on little secret: I have a tendency to procrastinate. (If Mama Doxie’s reading this, she’s probably thinking that that’s the understatement of the century!) Having put every other task off until the last minute, I knew that my Hallowedding craft projects needed to be quick and simple. And preferably cheap.
Have you ever had one of those moments where you wonder to yourself, “Why didn’t I think of that sooner!?”
I had that exact revelation just a few days ago when I decided to attempt to make some plain-jane, glass candlestick holders black.

After trying on 800 dresses and a hilarious ’80s-style montage, I’d just about given up and I was ready to call it a day and get some noodles already (Wagamama was just around the corner). Even MommaChips, shopping maven extraordinaire, was looking tired and weary. Weary and wary (she didn’t appreciate our hilarious ’80s-style montage).
But my friends (including my 6-months-preggo future sister-in-law) had just walked fifteen minutes to refresh the parking meter so I felt I owed it to them to go another round. Le sigh. The dresses were all so huge! So poufy! So shiny! So… not me. Even trying on dresses in earnest (i.e., of the non-pantsuit variety) made me feel like I was playing dress-up. I kept complaining, “I don’t think I like wedding dresses!”
Then, as fate would have it, a funny thing happened.
My friend handed me a dress, a wonderful dress! Lighter than air it was! Floaty and tiered and chiffon and magic and rainbows and stickers and ponies and butterflies!!! I tried it on, adjusted a few things, looked into the mirror. Smiled. Said, “hey…wait a minute…” Turned around and saw everyone else smiling, too.

Remember the photobooth we’re going to have at the wedding? Well, I kept trying to think of ways to display the pictures at the wedding. We aren’t using the photos as our guestbook, and I didn’t want them scattered all over because I thought they might get lost. So then it hit me, why not use clothespins?
There are some gorgeous clothespins, like these:

I thought this week I was going to write the post I’ve been waiting to write for 221 days. I though last Monday we were going to have our visa approved and I was going to be thrilled to announce that I was going to be reunited with Mr. Poodle in just a week. Well, that is not happening, and we won’t be reunited in a week.
Maybe my expectations were too high, but there was a no reason to get any answer but an approval, and even though we were not rejected, after the interview, I felt like we were.
Trust me, I’ve done major research about every aspect of what they ask during the visa interview, so I was pretty confident about it. But to my surprise, I got the answer I was not ready to hear: we have to keep waiting, waiting to know if we get approved (in my head I was screaming at him, saying, “Are you kidding me???” Is 221 days of waiting not long enough or something?).
I was so frustrated, sad, mad, and I felt like my heart was breaking, but I kept my head up, took a deep breath, smiled, and ask him about how they’ll contact me. Later, when I was home, I had to let everything out and I broke to tears. I felt our wedding plans were being trashed away by an Immigration Officer, and more than ever I wished I knew how to build a machine to teleport myself into Mr. Poodle’s arms.
So, yeah… after hours feeling like it was the end of the world, I realized how much of a baby I was because:

Je t’aime, you like? Oui oui?
For whatever reason, I feel like these bouts are French and they speak to me in broken English/French – Frenglish if you will. It probably has something to do with the guinea feathers. But don’t tell my Dad, because after Sept. 11, he’s been calling them Freedom Fries and there’s no convincing him that French speaking bouts are funny.
AnyBout, if DIY bouts are up your alley and you were wondering how, wonder no more. I’m going to give you a Bout Tutorial. Or a Bout Toot as I keep saying in my head, because right along with French speaking bouts, Bout Toot is hilarious!

Our invitations were semi-DIY. I ordered the actual invite and RSVP card from the White Aisle. Rebecca was really sweet and easy to work with—our invitations arrived in perfect order and on time! I decided to DIY the map and assemble them myself to save some money… although looking back I think what I saved in money was eaten up in the time I spent putting them together.
I originally planned on buying scrapbooking paper or wrapping paper to cut into liners, but I was unsuccessful. I finally gave up and decided to make my own. Our invitation envelopes were an odd size (5.5 x 7.5—the liner templates from PaperSource DO NOT include this size
), so I created liners by tracing the envelope and trimming 2cm off all of the edges. I then stamped the design shown below onto each liner using some purplish ink. I bought all the paper products from Hobby Lobby. This is what our guests saw when they opened up their mail:
We left off with the hydrofoil ride from Bellagio. We picked up a rental car in Como and headed towards our next destination, Santa Margarita Ligure along the Italian Riviera. Here are some of the highlights. Unfortunately, I broke my camera halfway through…

Our first round of cake tasting went well, all things considered. The people who helped us were very nice, and obviously well versed in weddings. We were seated at a little bistro table (the bakery is tiny) and given 2 pieces each of the four types of cake that I had listed. Those flavors again:

Clockwise, from the top left: red velvet with cream cheese frosting, genoise cake with vanilla mousse and sliced strawberries, chocolate cake with chocolate mousse, and their signature cheesecake.
Doesn’t it look yummy?
While shopping for my bridesmaids’ dresses, I end up wanting every cute silver dress I find for myself! It’s driving me nuts! I DO want them to look good, after all… even if I AM a bit jealous that I won’t be the one wearing fabulously chic little grey dresses like these:
How fabulous are these? I would love for all 3 of my girls to have different dresses, but apparently it’s very difficult to find 3 different silvers that go well together and aren’t obscenely expensive. One is either too blue, too dark, too taupe, too… something! BM dresses are basically the bane of my existence at this point, can you tell?
As you may know by now, our wedding is an ode to the Southern way of life. I started to think about Southern Belles and realized that for some of our wedding pictures, I really want to look the part. Not quite as done up as this…
… but still with the same essence. So I hopped on eBay and found a very “Southern” looking lace parasol and matching fan. How great will these look in photos of me in my dress walking around Savannah’s famous historic squares?
