Wedding Planning is a Beach

October 2nd, 2009 @ 11:59 am by Ms Potato Chips

Mr. Potato Head & I love a beach house. It is my dream to live, year-round, in a wee coastal cottage. If I were Robert Frost, I would say, “Something there is that doesn’t love a beach house.” Or something like that.

I love the colors, once-bright walls faded by the salt and sun. I love the smell of a beach house, like seaweed and ocean. I love the light-hearted design, the open space, the short walk to the beach, the flip flops kicked off in the entryway, morning coffee sipped on decks; even the sound of seagulls, I love. I love the mood evoked from a beach house, cheery on a sunny day, cozy and quiet when it’s cloudy. Easy, breezy, lazy, fun.

If we could, we’d have the wedding at a beach house. We even considered for the briefest of instants, having it at my parents’ seaside cottage. Except that it posed many problems, namely: parking, toilets, lack of space, wind.

Okay. So the next best thing… let’s get married in a beachy town and rent a beach house for our wedding weekend!

I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!

Pearls

October 2nd, 2009 @ 11:34 am by Mrs. Lamb

One of my first thoughts about wedding colors was to incorporate pearl and silver. While not colors per se, I wanted these finishes/metallics to round out the feel.

So far, pearls have been incorporated:

  1. On my dress - after swearing I didn’t want lots of beading, the outer layer of my dress sports little clumps of crystals and pearls.
  2. In the bouts - I found little pearl picks, pearlized flowers, and pearlesque buttons.
  3. On the bridesmaid pomanders - I’ve been attaching the fabric flowers with pearl tipped pins and adding pearlized buttons.

The list will increase as I find other little places to tuck them in.

The most obvious place I’m not incorporating pearls is on my neck.

Yeah, I’m STILL Talking About Cake

October 2nd, 2009 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Cloud

Yes, I realize this is starting to get a little bit ridiculous. I went over and over and over what I wanted it to look like, and finally settled on something I love. That should be it, right? Not so much. I blame the fabulous Mrs. Cupcake for this one.

Here I was all settled with my cake decisions, and then I got the flu. Not the swine flu, thankfully—just the regular old can’t-do-anything-but-eat-soup-and-sit-on-the-couch kind. (Ironically, every time I tell someone I had the flu last week, the first question is if it was h1n1, and the second question was if I licked any wedding envelopes. For the record, I didn’t do that, but that is not at all the point to my story.) So, I have the flu, and I’m super bored, chillin’ on my couch. What’s a girl to do other than read back on some of her favorite Weddingbee archives? Well, I have always been a huge fan of Mrs. Cupcake’s wedding and all of her glorious details. I’m not sure how I missed this one the first time, but I saw the following picture again recently and was officially obsessed.

I enjoy carving, drawing, reading and sewing; I drool over computers, fabric, pretty paper, purple and patterns. To me, chocolate should be one of the seven wonders, right next to lemon pie. I never thought an exchange work experience program was going to change my life forever, but while working in California, I met Mr. Poodle, and ever since my days are better and brighter. We are two goofy souls that, after finding each other, couldn’t help but want to be together forever. It has being a long and sometimes hard road, since we have to deal with such a long distance between us, but we are now facing the last stage of our Fiancé Visa, and soon we will be together. You know the best part? We will be married! So I’ll be blogging from Chile until just a few months before our “green and purple” wedding.

Decisions, Decisions! - Dress Decisions

October 2nd, 2009 @ 9:20 am by Mrs. Poodle

Remember when I showed you all my inspiration dresses for the one I’m making? Well, at that time, I was so focused on finding something I liked that I didn’t pay attention to one little detail—our wedding will be in winter!  Just like I mentioned before in my shoe post, I suffer from a really low tolerance to cold weather. So, I realized that I needed to think about a way to stay warm, but still have the dress of my dreams.

Because I was not 100% sure about the shape I wanted for the top of the dress, I just focused on finishing the bottom part and the undergarments. Later on, I added a splash of color to my crinoline, which made me really happy! But I had decisions to make, as the top needs to be finished, AHORA!

(You already know this is one of THOSE posts, Mr. Poodle!)

About Mrs. Mascara

Our journey to our honeymoon was a long one. It started on Sunday, September 6th, at approximately 6:00 AM. Yes, we woke up at 6 AM the day after our wedding! We showered, got ready, and packed all of our things before making our way to my parents’ house to say goodbye to our families. We had a short visit and a homemade breakfast, hugged our parents and sisters, and we were on our way. We would have loved to stay to visit and open gifts, but we had a flight to catch!

We drove the 4.5 hours back to our apartment outside Chicago, switched luggage, and did a quick load of laundry before getting picked up to go to the airport.

Our Hallowedding: The Invitations!

October 1st, 2009 @ 6:00 pm by Mrs. Dachshund

I really appreciated all of your responses when I asked you to help us choose our Hallowedding invitations! After taking all of your thoughts into consideration, I decided that I liked the idea of the boxed candy invitations best. So, I began my search for 5×7 mailer boxes. Unfortunately, I put the task of making my invitations off for too long. I needed to get the invites in the mail this week; not only would it take too long for the boxes to arrive, but the shipping costs put them just over my budget.

I was a bit disappointed in myself because I think the boxed invitations would have turned out great. But I came up with a new design that I hope you’ll like just as much! They’re a lot simpler than the boxed invitations would have been, but I think they turned out pretty well!

Our Hallowedding: The Invitations! : wedding diy invitations stationery 1 1

I designed the invitations in Adobe Illustrator and had them printed at Kinko’s. I know that Kinko’s isn’t the greatest for print quality, but they turned out better than they would have on my home printer.

I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.

Signage

October 1st, 2009 @ 5:30 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

I really love signage. Yes, it might be redundant and unnecessary, but I think it’s those little details that make a wedding. And, I’m also a little anal and like orderliness, so the signs will help people know what to do and where to go. Here are some things I want signs for:

Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.

Ms. P.Chips Vs. Sand Worm

October 1st, 2009 @ 4:38 pm by Ms Potato Chips

You know in Beetle Juice, when the couple can’t leave their house or they’ll be engulfed by a sand monster, freak windstorm, and rapidly disappearing landscape? That’s how I felt about planning weddings. It’s like, holy crap—I am not leaving my front doorstep. I’m going to stay in here and bury my nose in a book and forage for cookie crumbs and watch Daisy of Love Tour Bus IV, and maybe our wedding will somehow come together on its own. Maybe all I can hope for is the wedding not to eat me alive. (What is wrong with me?? I have no idea.)

But no one can stay trapped in their house forever, right? So, soon after our engagement, Mr. Potato Head & I spent a Sunday afternoon (oh, fine, it was a Saturday night!) at our local mega-bookstore, where we stood stupefied in front of the wedding section (it has its own section?!), selected an armful of planners, guides, and magazines that we had no intention of buying, and plopped ourselves down at a table, ready to throw down some serious wedding knowledge.

Two cups of coffee and a snickerdoodle later, I was starting to hyperventilate.
