Mrs. Lamb, Norfolk Age and Occupation: 25, Homeland Security Consultant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Graduate Student Engagement Date: January 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Trinity Presbyterian Church/Harrison Opera House About Me: I’m a Homeland Security Consultant with a tendency towards pulling office pranks, taking lunch breaks, and drinking Wawa shakes. I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!

DIY Cake Plate

October 26th, 2009 @ 2:04 pm by Mrs. Lamb

Back when I pitched this idea, many of you were worried that if I didn’t permanently glue to the plates to the candlesticks that we would end up with cake on the table and the floors - or basically anywhere opposite of the place we want the cake (in our tummehs!). I considered the options, and while I still like the idea of being able to take them apart and reuse the pieces separately, I decided to test the gluing option.

I had a tube of E-6000 and decided to just go for it. I’m pretty happy with the results, so I decided to show you how it turned out and how I plan to make 13 more cake plates for our tables.

This cake plate was as easy as pie cake. You need the following supplies:

  1. Candlestick (mine is a pressed glass one from the thrift store)
  2. Plate (mine is a pressed glass one from the thrift store)
  3. Tube of E-6000 glue (I bought mine at either Michaels or Jo-Ann’s)

I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.

I Heart Paloma’s Nest

October 26th, 2009 @ 1:40 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Woo hoo!! I got a very exciting package in the mail this past weekend! I ordered way too many things last week (stamps, ink pads, Halloween costume, out of town guests bags, and the list goes on and on), so every day was like Christmas at my mailbox. I’m still waiting on a lot of those items, but I got one item I’ve been waiting on for the past couple weeks. It was our ring bearer bowls from Paloma’s Nest!!

Before I even knew who our ring bearers were, I knew I wanted one of these bowls. And then once I asked two sweet little boys to be in the wedding, I had to get two of them. This was really great because I was having a hard time deciding on just one phrase to put in them. Finally I decided on two great phrases, but for budget reasons I went with one custom bowl and one pre-existing.

So, on to the fun part: the pictures! Here’s what it looked like when I opened up the package:

And then I opened those up as quickly as I could and saw this:

PRO: Strike Up the Band!

October 26th, 2009 @ 1:30 pm by Chelsea Petaja @ Oh My Deer

The headband, that is!

I’ve had a less hectic month than most, so I had a little bit of time to work on pieces that weren’t necessarily commission-based. The result? A few fancy headbands… and one sparkly necklace. All but Loretta and Shirly can be worn traditionally or over the forehead.

Feeling demure? Wear it pushed back!
Feeling like a hippy-dippy love child? Pull it down!

Hallooooooo!

October 26th, 2009 @ 12:48 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

Giddy, gleeful, giggly. These are all words that could be used to describe my feelings after I got an email from Mrs Penguin saying I had been accepted to blog for Weddingbee. Then I calmly shut my laptop, turned off the TV and went to sleep.

HA! That, my friends, is a joke. In reality, I bounced around in a circle in my studio apartment twice, did a face plant onto the bed then picked myself up, ran another 3 circles around the apartment and promptly did another head bomb into the bed. At this point, I’m pretty sure Mr Trail Mix thought I was actually insane, since I had yet to explain my exciting email. Once I did, he was pretty happy and excited for me as well but there were a few moments where I’m sure he was wondering if he made a mistake by proposing to a certified lunatic. Of course, I was buzzing (haha!) all night, thinking out this post in my head.

Anyways, hello, hola, bonjour, boas, konichiwa, etc.! I can’t believe I am actually writing this for Weddingbee, it’s still hard to believe I’m here. I’m so looking forward to getting to know you all and hopefully with all your support, ideas and inspiration, I will make it through our wedding in one piece. I’m planning a country-chic outdoor bonanza for approximately one million guests. No, that’s a lie; it just feels that way sometimes. It’s really more like 180-200 people. Help me along as I attempt to DIY the heck out of this wedding.

Mrs. Rainbow's Picture
Mrs. Rainbow, Tampa Age and Occupation: 22, Makeup Artist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Electrical Engineer/Programmer Engagement Date: November 27, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Gamble Plantation About Me: I'm a quirky (and slightly Type-A) freelance makeup artist who was born in Washington State, raised in Alabama, and now living with my one and only in sunny Florida. I'm fashion and beauty obsessed, and have recently discovered my inner domestic diva extraordinaire. I'm a wannabe chef, decorating addict, and trying desperately to be as crafty as possible---albeit only with a glue gun. I'm hopelessly in love with my fiance, and all things sparkly and feathery. Despite the glittery exterior, I'm a total hippie on the inside. When I'm not making up pretty faces, I love doing what I can to help people, animals, and the environment. Someday the FI and I will change the world, but first we're tackling our modern-vintage-Marie-Antoinette-meets-Alice-in-Wonderland inspired wedding. I just can't wait to be Mrs. Rainbow!
About Mrs. Rainbow

I went dress shopping with high hopes and a ton of nerves. The previous times I had gone into bridal boutiques, I was looking for BM dresses, and I wouldn’t even touch the wedding dresses. They all hung there, a prim and proper sea of white, just waiting for a blushing bride to slip into them and declare: “It’s The One!” They just felt like these sacred things and I couldn’t help but think, ‘will I seriously be wearing one of those?’ It was just too surreal and weird. I knew I would have to wait until I was good and ready to try them on; there was no rushing this one.

Despite my hesitation in actually trying on a dress, I could look at pictures of them for hours, carefully analyzing what I wanted, what I didn’t, what would flatter my figure and what just wouldn’t work. By the time I was ready to hit the shops, I knew exactly what I wanted. Tons of lace, no sparkle, strapless, sweetheart neckline, empire waist, A-line silhouette. I had done my research and I was ready to pound the pavement.

On my first day out, I decided to take it slow. I didn’t expect to find “The Dress” on my first day out, or even locally. I figured it would be kind of like “preliminary dress shopping”, and that I just wanted to see if anything caught my eye. My first stop was the local Alfred Angelo boutique. For those who don’t know, they’re like a step up from David’s. They have a similar business plan, but better quality, and their dresses are a tad bit more unique, while still being very affordable. Here’s what I tried on:

Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.

Our Save-the-Dates

October 26th, 2009 @ 11:07 am by Mrs. Hamster

I have total craft envy. I love all things related to paper goods, DIY, different types of adhesives, scissors and paper punches. I pore over invitations and scrapbooks like a madwoman. I have my Gocco, bone folder, heat gun, bone folder, and extra sharp scissors. The only thing missing? Actual crafting experience.

Enter the lovely world of Weddingbee and other wedding blogs! These sites are invaluable sources of inspiration for DIY-wannabe gals like myself. After resolving the formal vs. informal save-the-date debate (another whole post), I found and fell in love with these guys:

Mrs. Mary Jane's Picture
Mrs. Mary Jane, Grand Forks, ND Age and Occupation: 26, Instructional Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lead Programmer Engagement Date: February 28, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: City Hall About Me: I'm a career woman on the surface and a homemaker at heart. I love fast cars and high heels, and my favorite food is cake. Mr. Mary Jane and I are both full-time employees and students, and we just bought our first house. We love to curl up on the couch with buttery popcorn, Sour Patch Kids, and the latest Netflix arrival -- whenever we can get a break from everyday life.
About Mrs. Mary Jane

While taking pre-wedding portraits, our two families had arrived at the courthouse. Mr. Mary Jane’s parents and mine had never before met, so this was kind of a tense moment (for me, at least). Would they like each other? Would they get along? When you’ve got such a small guest list, you really have to hope that no one will offend each other or anything right off the bat. There isn’t really anyone else for them to talk to. We’re glad that everyone got along really well, and enjoyed each others’ company throughout the afternoon and evening.

Mrs. Cowboy Boot's Picture
Mrs. Cowboy Boot, Santa Fe Age and Occupation: 25, Magazine Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Artist and Whitewater Rafting Guide Engagement Date: April 28th, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Devil's Thumb Ranch, Colorado About Me: I grew up in Los Angeles and have since lived in San Diego, Boston, Italy, Hawaii, New York City, and Santa Fe. I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. Despite my boyish love for adventure, I'm a girly-girl at heart and am overly-excited to pull off the romantic, vintage-inspired, country wedding of my dreams.
About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Someone once told me that the days before the wedding can lead to one of a couple’s biggest fights. The stress, the emotions, and the exhaustion all play into it. Well, it turns out that the Friday before the wedding was (almost) our day.

The morning after my bachelorette party was, well, not pretty to say the least. We were all “feelin’ it” but had to pull it together to make the drive from Denver to Tabernash, Colorado, which is about two hours along a windy mountain pass. I’d be dropping off Bridesmaid AC and her sister at Devil’s Thumb Ranch before meeting up with Mr. Cowboy Boot to go get our marriage license.

But, Mr. CB had a different idea about the day’s itinerary. He was already up in Tabernash and wanted to have lunch with some of his guys about an hour back towards Denver (the opposite way of the County Clerk’s office). The thing was that we only had an 8-hour window to get our marriage license (half of which was gone by this point) and, it being Friday, made it the only day to do it before the wedding. The clock was ticking.

I was about to go into bridezilla mode and mandate lunch be canceled but I forced myself to keep my cool. I told him to go, knowing that lunch would probably take longer than his two-hour estimate but that we’d still have a couple of hours afterward to get our license. I was hungover, exhausted, and not in the mood to argue. Secretly, I was dying to sneak in a nap and a shower too. So, I went into our cabin at Devil’s Thumb and did a little meditation to snap out of my bad mood. Take note, brides-to-be, this works.
