About Miss Hamster

(Almost) Buff Bride

November 1st, 2009 @ 2:45 pm by Miss Hamster

I dread exercising. I know, that’s horrible - and to my credit, I like walking around the city, water sports, hiking, and the occasional run. But the Big E, which I define as getting up early to go to the gym, trying to figure out complicated machines at said gym, and getting frustrated at said gym, is not my idea of fun.

So what’s a roly-poly Hammy to do? Enter the world of Buff Brides!

For $11 on Amazon, the Buff Brides workout book is a small but worthwhile investment. It leads you through a 12 or 24 week strength training regimen targeted toward common “problem” areas for brides - arms, back, abs, etc.

Pros:

  • Results! I’m on week 4 and am already starting to see greater definition in my arms and abs.
  • Not-too-boring. I do the routine in front of the TV, which is better than my usual TV activity of sitting-on-my-butt.
  • Minimal equipment. You only need a set of hand weights, an exercise ball (also available on Amazon), and a sturdy couch or coffee table.
  • The price is right.

Cons:

  • The layout of the book is a little awkward. The list of exercises is in one section, and you have to flip through the book to go to each exercise’s description. The book also doesn’t stay open to a particular page, which is annoying. After a while though, you learn all the exercises so this becomes less of an issue.
  • The descriptions of certain exercises can be a little confusing to coordination-challenged brides like myself.
  • The book recommends cardio on your “off” days, but doesn’t provide too much guidance on what specific activities would be most effective. I like being told exactly what to do when it comes to fitness!

I’m one-third of the way through the 12 week program (I know I have time to do the 24 week program, but I’m impatient). Will I stick to it? Well, since now you all know I’m doing this, I probably will out of sheer pressure. I’ll keep you posted on the results!

How are you getting in shape for your wedding?

Cool! I’ve never heard of this. I usually like to work out to a video because it forces me to make it to the end of the video. Otherwise, I’d probably give up too quickly. But I do like the idea of working out while I watch tv. Hmm.

As I mentioned elsewhere–BEST. WORKOUT. EVER. Huge results, and fast. A few weeks in you pretty much memorize the workouts anyway, which addresses Con #1, and Con #3 at least allows you to do the kind of cardio that you can stick with over time (cardio can be very boring otherwise). And you’ll see results even without the cardio portion.

Yeah I do better with a video at home than I do trying to get to the gym sometimes. Thanks for the info, I will be looking into getting started on this.

That sounds good! I have trouble sticking to my exercise routines, but if I have a plan in front of me it is so much easier! Thank you for this post and congratulations on your 4 week results!!

I signed up and paid for a half marathon a week before the wedding. I thought I’d do more training, but time seems to get away from me lately. But at least minimal training equals a workout. And paying $100 to participate is enough commitment to make me not want to waste it.

Sounds like something to try! I like workouts w/a set goal in mind. It makes it easier to stick to it over 12 weeks! Can’t wait to here how it goes.

I really need to do something to get in shape for the wedding. I just don’t know if I should wait unitl closer to the wedding to start. I have a tendency to start out with great intentions, but then lose steam along the way. I’ll check this book out!

Oh no - just reading about another May 2010 bride working out makes me cringe. I really need to get on it! Thanks for reviewing this book, I think I’ll check it out!

I said I’d start going back to the gym starting yesterday, but that so hasn’t happened yet. I really need to get a move on! Thanks for the inspiration.

This will be helpful. I am taking care of the cardio through running, but never can stick to a weight workout routine. Thanks!
