DIY Project #1: Poufs: An Introduction

November 2nd, 2009 @ 3:20 pm by Miss Snow

I bought this Martha Stewart kit from Michaels. For $19.99, I got 7 “pom pom” kits (I prefer “pouf”, even though I cringe just a little at the thought of discussing a “tissue paper pouf” at great length). My mom and I had already decided to DIY these ourselves and are having the staff at the farm hang them for us. While we knew how to make them in theory (my mom said she made them in college and the girls would scent them with their perfume), I decided to let the queen of beautiful crafts, Martha Stewart, guide our project.

They. are. so. easy. Really, the kit contains cleverly cut organized tissue paper and wire. And that’s it. I kept looking for some magical Martha glitter or something. Nope. Tissue paper and wire. I don’t completely regret buying the kit since I now know how to make them (# of sheets, width of sheet needed for desired circumference of pouf, angle to cut the corners to get dahlia-like poufs, etc.), but I probably could have figured this out on my own.

And only making matters ever-so-slightly more complicated, Mr. Snow asked a great question upon completion of my frothy masterpiece: “How are they going to light up?”

Ummm…they need to light up?

(I think I’ve found some battery-operated LED lights that will run for 5-8 hours that might work. It may take some experimentation. Add another item to the DIY list.)

Have you ever lit poms? What lights do you recommend?

These are lovely! As for lighting them up, hmm. Are they going to hang from a string or wire? Perhaps string them along Christmas lights?

I was going to suggest what Miss Hamster did — Christmas lights or cafe lights would look awesome with them!

They’re so pretty! I don’t think they need to light up. I’d be worried about fire hazards, honestly. But I bet LED would be safe.

very pretty! I agree with Mrs. Mouse though, I’d be afraid of fire hazards.

Ah, don’t you love the innocent “I didn’t help with this project but I am totally going to input my opinion that makes this project last EVEN longer” comments from our fiances?

My mom and I poofed a package of these for our shower, and then forgot to bring them! I don’t know how, as they were huge! I was sad, they are so pretty!

Ha! I love it that your fiance asks questions like that too! Those poufs are pretty, and I think LED lights would be safe, but I wouldn’t put them up with Christmas lights, those tend to heat up, right?

What about these: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/fairylights2.html They’re battery operated, and come on bendable wire so you maybe you could put them through the poof somehow?!

I have used them with white christmas lights before. I am happy to send pics if you would like to see them. All you have to do is string the lights however you want them and then I made a hook out of the end of the wire of the pouf and just hung them on the wires of the christmas lights. They were up for about 8 hours and didn’t even get warm from the lights.

If you need to make any more, don’t buy the kit. Just go to Martha’s website and get the directions there. You will save lots of $$$… it really is not worth buying the kit. All you need are tissue paper, wire, and scissors…

It looks great! As for lighting them up…is that possible? I’d think you would have to string them up on a string of lights. I would think the tissue paper might block all the light if you tried to stick an LED light in it. But it might work…let us know what you come up with.

Awww I think it would be awesome if they lit up, kinda like soft little lit… soft… bugs… that made more sense in my head, but you know. Fluffy fireflies! There we go. They look great, regardless!

Hmm. Glue LED throwies (hidden, interspersed) among the pouffy petals?
