I love to sew, draw, paint, build, cook, bake (anything with a tangible end result is fair game). In that same spirit, I've been hosting since I was old enough to cook and set a fancy table. Wedding Cake

November 2nd, 2009 @ 2:00 pm by Mrs. Moonbeam

We’re not having a big, traditional wedding cake. We’ll be having a little cake, made by my sister (who works in a bakery). We’ll have a groom’s cake from a local bakery and a table full of other desserts that family members are making. So, I haven’t put a ton of thought into the cake, but I have a few criteria. It won’t be fancy, it won’t be too big, and the icing has to be just right. I don’t like most icings, especially the white ones. But, luckily, I love cream cheese frosting, and the off-white color is perfect for our fall wedding. For the cake, I was thinking red velvet or chocolate. But after testing out recipes for red velvet and not finding one that I’m in love with, I think we’ll be going with chocolate. Now, on to the look of the cake.

I tried out a red velvet recipe and making a tiered cake. Now remember, my sister works in a bakery and can actually ice a cake; I can’t, and this was me doing the trial run.

This was my attempt.

I used a 9″ layer and a 6″ layer for this cake. The decoration is a trace paper ribbon and a flower from my flower wall project. I like the subdued colors, but I think I might incorporate something similar to our belly bands. Wedding Cake : wedding cake Belly B
For the cake, I would just use 1 fold, with an interesting stitch going all the way around.

I also love this look from Jeff Ruddell at Craftstylish.

Wedding Cake : wedding cake Paper C How, cool would that be?! I’d have to practice a bit and get some more X-Acto blades, but that would definitely be a showstopper. I just am unsure about what color paper to use. Trace paper would be too thin, so I’d have to introduce another color, but I think it could definitely work.

Then there are edible decorations. I’m not too into the pastry bag scalloped edges and such, so my sister has recommended a chocolate ribbon (to which I countered, how about white chocolate?). She said yes, so there’s that option, but definitely no bow.

But, after seeing how this can be when it’s not perfect, I’m not sure. I like homemade looking things, where the lines aren’t supposed to be straight. If the line is supposed to be straight and isn’t (like with a ribbon) I can’t get as into it. So, maybe not.

There could also be melted white chocolate drizzled around the edges. Kind of like this, but maybe not so regular, and with no flowers.

What do you guys think? Are you averse to non-edible decorations, or does it just go with the wedding territory? Because if it does, I’m definitely going to have to put some real effort into trying out Mr. Ruddell’s fabulous cut flower border.

I really, really like the flower cut border!!! But, I also love sweets so edible decor would be right up my alley. (I’m not being any help, I apologize!) I do think that if you did the flower cut border, it would definitely be unique (and beautiful)!

i like the flower cut border too. maybe you can do that with cardstock? that should be stiff enough to stand up on its own.

Yeah, non-edible is perfectly fine and part of the territory. The cut flower border seems do-able, and it’s really cute!

I think non-edible is totally fine. My cake will be sans fondant because I don’t like the way it tastes, which means edible decor is sort of impossible for me, and I’m ok with that. :)

I think using ones like your belly bands on the first one would be really cute! I also LOVE cream cheese frosting!!

I love the idea of a white chocolate ribbon. The chocolate can always be colored the same yellow as your belly band too. It’s just a much more polished presentation and cutting through white chocolate is so much easier than dealing with fabric ribbon!

I really like the simple, trace paper borders, similar to your trial cake. Simple and homemade. Very pretty.

If you’re going for something simple, I really like your first trial option. Otherwise the melted, dripping looking chocolate is really neat too.
