Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

How do you dress a Potato Head? Beats me!

Potato Head is starting to think about his wedding day ensemble. Here are the things working against him:

  1. Potato Head doesn’t want a traditional tux.
  2. Potato Head wants something more formal than a khaki-blazer combo (which was the first thing I suggested).
  3. Potato Head wants to rock him some suspenders.
  4. Potato Head is a fair-skinned ginger and is convinced he doesn’t look good in black.
  5. Potato Head is color-blind.

Egads. This should be a good time. When I came across Jessica Claire’s gorgeous wedding, I knew I’d found a winning combo. Suspenders? Yes! Old-school style and spiff? Yes indeedy!

My plan: show this photo to Potato Head, hope he agrees (I think he will!) and have him take care of the rest. I have enough to do! And I’d love to be surprised by his outfit… as long as someone who can see the spectrum of black, navy, charcoal, and purple accompanies him. Or else I might see someone like this during our first look:

Aw heck, as long as he’s raining dollar billz and wearing a jaunty hat like this gentleman, I guess I won’t care.

What’s your groom wearing? Is it going to be a surprise?

Jeff said the SAME thing! Plus, I didn’t want 8 guys in matching tuxes when there were only 100 guests at our wedding and it was more of a country chic vibe. Glad you liked it!!

Whoa, that’s quite a list you’ve got to work with there! But I love the look in that picture - and it definitely works with all the requirements! Mr. Hammy will *probably* end up going with the traditional tux.

By the way, I know someone who wore that same exact purple pimp suit for Halloween once!

I think we’re going to go with the Brooks Brothers 3 piece suit look. He loves loves loves Brooks Brothers but can’t seem to justify spending that much on a suit for anything but a wedding, plus he’ll be able to wear it after for job interviewing, teaching, preaching and whatever else -ing words need suits! He’s pretty excited, to say the least.

How about light grey pants, a casual button-up shirt with sleeves rolled up, and suspenders?

PChips, I like P Head’s style!

The Pretzel is thinking along the same lines. I’m worried how to coordinate the GM’s shades of grey- do you tell them a specific pair of pants and dress shirt to purchase? I guess since they aren’t renting a tux that shouldn’t be a problem…

Attire for the dudes is the one area of wedding planning that I’m completely and totally turning over to my fiance. Together, we decided that their main color should be grey, with blue accents (ties, pocket squares, socks). Everything else is up to my fiance, including suits vs tuxes, shade of blue, whether he wants everyone to match, ensuring the men have their outfits, etc. And my fiance is enough of a Metrosexual that I’m not worried about the menfolk being clad in grey sweatsuits with blue sweatbands :) Mostly, though, I just need something in this wedding that’s absolutely NOT my responsibility to worry about.

My guy is wearing a grey suit. He just knew he didn’t want a tux, but didn’t really have requirements beyond that. So, I picked grey suit. :)

You are too funny, P Chips! Mr. P was going to wear a grey suit, which changed to a black suit, which might change to a tux of some unknown color.

My fiance is wearing a dark grey suit. The best part is that he can wear it over and over. My surprise to him is that I’m going to have the seamstress stitch our wedding date into his collar to make it special. Not everyone will know it is there so it feels like a fun secret to keep.

My FI wants to wear a tux because there aren’t too many occasions where he’ll get to wear one. I, on the other hand, do not want him to wear a tux! Not that the wedding is going to be casual, but i just can’t imagine a super formal wedding, and i really can’t get the “penguin suit” image out of my head, even though I know there are so many styles out there.

We’ll probably look for his outfit together, and I’ll keep an open mind to tuxes. Maybe if there’s a stunning gray one that’s not too…Mr. Moneybags-ish…we can go with that!

Snazzy! But you trust your fiance much more than I do! He actually wants to go super formal with a morning coat and tails and an ascot. I didn’t see that coming at all.

FI wanted to rent a tuxedo (instead of buying a suit). But, once we went to looking, I think I’ve talked him into buying both a suit & a tuxedo.

Thinking that most men have black suits (or recognize that they’re like little black dresses–everyone should have one), I was going to have FI & BM in black suits. Turns out BM doesn’t have a black suit that fits–a pinstripe one that might fit. But, he does have a brand new tuxedo he bought because his niece is coming out this month. So, FI will wear a similar tuxedo (and then have something to take with him if/when we decide to go on a cruise).

My guy is wearing a light grey 3 piece suit and the guys are wearing charcoal grey. I don’t know if a groom has ever surprised the bride with her outfit, that would be awesome.

That’s a great inspiration pic! I like Miss Mouse’s idea…mostly because I have a thing for guys with rolled up shirt sleeves.

Such a fun post… my hubby is color-blind too! We went traditional tux route, but many of our wedding things were formal, so it was good.

He looked hot taking off each layer throughout the night- first jacket, then the vest, then finally in the suspenders. I loved how it turned out in pics.

Love, Love, Love grooms in suits! The grey is fabulous in these pics - my groom wore a blue pinstripe and was ideal - formal enough to go with my very detailed gown and it’s an investment that he’ll use for years to come.

happy shopping!

@jessica claire: Your wedding was so incredibly gorgeous! Thanks for commenting!
@Gilneas: I’m so picturing a top hat and cane right now. It’s funny, but I guess this is the rare occasion for guys to get all up in formal ware!
@gibbysgirl21: I do love me some suspenders!
@Miss French Fries: Me too!! Hot stuff!
@Mrs. Mouse: I’m loving this idea!
